If Carlton land Papley, Martin and Betts where does he go
If the club is able to secure all of them, Id say Martin would line up on a wing,

HF: Papley Curnow Butler
FF: Betts McKay McGovern

Which would be one of the more dangerous forward groupings that Carlton has fielded in some time.

Interesting player. Has some definite interesting skills - deft kicks into space, clever taps, good brain. I always thought he had the most potential of the smalls for that reason.

Unfortunately, he probably over-thinks the 'cleverness' at the expense of the basics. He can run, he can kick and he can tackle. Just do that.

There was a game earlier this year in the magoos where he kicked 3 goals - every kick was uncontested, standing on the goal-line (not handballs over the top, just right place, right time). The 3 kicks travelled a total distance of 5 metres.

That's either the sign of a smart reader of the play, or a cheap, lucky scab. Classic small forward. Every side needs them. They drive the opposition mad when they are on, and drive you mad when they are not.

I think if we get anything for him, we'll be happy.

Dont be silly.

If you dont think the club remembers the Yarran s**t you guys kept from us and also dragged out in trade week, you are foolish. Clubs dont forget when they get f’ed over. Whilst you may get Butler for peanuts, I wouldnt expect the Tigers to gift wrap him aswell.

Think you are confusing paid, professional list managers with gilted, online football fans.

There is simply no way Richmond would look to enact 'revenge' for the Yarran situation and all over Dan Butler? Please. If they didn't want to pay the price, they could have walked away. If someone is selling a car, you negotiate sure; but if they stand firm on their price, you either pay or your walk away. It's also incumbent on you to have a mechanical professional look into the car for any potential problems. It's no good paying then whinging that the owner told you 'it ran good' after you'd seen it driving around town before and liked it...

If Butler wants to get to the Blues and the feeling is mutual, the deal will be done with minimal fuss IMO. Something like a fringe pick we get from Sydney in any Papley deal ie. Pick 49 or 57 etc.

Why squabble about getting a pick from sydney if thats the case and you have already had the mechanic check it out just pay the #44 you hold and get it done
;)

You'd love that wouldn't you mate! Blood from the stone and all that ;)

Think Carlton in that situation (still so much water to go under the bridge with trades, picks could and probably will vary wildly between now and then) would look to keep 44, think we will use it in the draft if we can't acquire a glut of second rounders or even sneak our way back into the first.

Knowing SOS, he will be bloody active and crafty as per...

Just use the #49-#57 in the draft - simple

Think he could still end up at the Blues. Betts would only be a short term replacement and Papley and Martin can go through the middle too, meaning we could realistically play all four next season (although probably won’t). Long term we’d be a smart option.
Not against it at all if he comes cheap. Just pushes out some of your younger players who play a similar role.

The thing is, we don't have any younger players that are showing any potential in that area. We mostly played blokes out of position there this year (Gibbons and Dow) and the ones that are better suited like Polson and Lang are mostly useless. I think if we got all 4 of those players, we'd delist Lang and Deluca and possibly look to pay out someone like Polson who still has a year left on his contract.

You mean the Chris Yarran who you guys approached in July, and who we wanted to keep? If there was any info missing on his bio, that's your own fault.

41 feels about right

a future third would be nice too for a player of Butlers quality

Sold. take whoever you want from us.

We should be into him as a 3rd small fwd, or 2nd in the event Fantasia leaves.

I don’t rate Butler... feel like he is stuck on rails and has no agility. He’s good for 10 possessions and 1 goal at best.
I reckon he’s still got improvement in him. His strengths are his speed and defensive pressure. Unfortunately he doesn’t use that speed to hit packs and get to the drop of the ball often enough.
If he improves in that area someone is going to snare a pretty handy small forward.
