I want to stick up for pokies a bit here, and the pensioners/older people who go to play them...majority of players are NOT problem gamblers..

I also don't see a difference between someone taking $50 to a club and spending a pleasant couple of hours...or someone who goes out for a meal and then to the pictures....both have nothing to show for the $50 at the end of the day.....just different preferences of outings..

Also its important to remember as people get older, they don't go out at night much at all, so go out during the day, it also feels safer for them..
Not a lot to do when you get elderly...what else is there for them, not much..

All this talk about "bad" pokies....I see betting on all codes of racing as far worse....a good lot of those people will bet on footy etc as well..

Not a lot of pokie players (elderly) will be doing other forms of gambling as well..

If we have a pokie palace, then at least there will be money coming in to the club.....times change, and atm thats the way to go until something better comes along..

I don't feel guilty at all for having our club relying on pokies....if people can't have discipline with their money, thats their problem not ours..

Agree entirely MacMum. How many footy clubs own social clubs that sell alcohol and have ciggie machines.

Alcohol and tobacco cause more than their fair share of misery too, but we can't punish the majority because of the actions of the minority who can't moderate themselves.

Just a shame that we don't have our financial eggs in more baskets than the pokies. All it takes is for Logan City Council to pass a law heavily restricting or banning pokie machines and our one major revenue stream goes balls up.

A bit of creativity, diversity and innovation in our business model would be nice.

40 percent of pokie machine revenue comes from problem gambling, and up to 350,000 australians will at some stage have a problem with the machines at some point in their lives. Mostly im sure from areas like Logan.

Im just not comfortable financially supporting an organisation that taps into that disease in our culture

Also this topic probly needs its own thread as its not really related to Dan Collins!

That's the worry. Or at least diversify the venues.

This is the first venture. Once it is established diversification can start. If it's not explained in the annual report this is the sort of thing that would make a great question at the AGM if people are concerned. Though I'd be interested in hearing what sorts of things people think would be appropriate for the club to diversify into?

Babcock and Brown shares. ;)

Let's not go there... That's called groupthink and its why I think most of the board members aren't there for 'prestige'. I think most of them are very busy people who have other responsibilities that they consider far more important. I think the board should not be filled by sponsors.

I didn't watch the game on Saturday, but saw some footage on the news this evening. Just want someone who watched to confirm it was Collins behind Voss on the bench. If so it certainly backs up the post TBD made earlier, saying his appearance on the boundary against the Saints was a very deliberate show of public support. I can think of no other reason a COO would be on the sidelines, wearing a headset. I wasn't aware he travelled with the team either.

Wasn't me!

Yeah I am pretty sure it was him.

I don't think it has anything to do with Voss / the Club trying to prove something to the media, for mine it seems more like an indication of an ever expanding role.

It was Manny Lynch behind Vossy on the bench.

Was an interesting 2 page article in the Courier on Friday that was an interview with Voss. Pretty much mentions the same thing, that because he doesn't have a footy background it is easy to blame him. He did make a good point in the defense of Collins though, saying that he has had to wear a lot of hats this season and perform a lot of roles, because they basically don't have the staff in place to do it all yet. They had a few people behind the scenes leave last year, and they haven't really got people in place to take over those roles, so Collins has been doing more than he normally would.

Yeah that's true. But on the flip side you could argue that Dan Collins has been strongly linked as a significant factor in coaching staff leaving. Also, the areas where Dan Collins has expertise actually appear to be getting worse within the Club and not better.

It is hard to know anything for real from the outside looking in, and financial constraints on the football department do seem to be a big issue, but there are two sides to every coin. Hopefully Voss and Dan are actually intelligent enough to acknowledge where they have made mistakes and rectify them.

Take what you will from this, but over the weekend I talked to one current lions player and another former player about Collins. Both were in full praise of Voss as a coach however neither liked Collins as a bloke. The former player actually mentioned there was something fishy to me a couple of seasons ago when Collins wasn't in such a prominent position. Will be interesting to see what transpires over the next few months (especially if we don't start winning)

Collins wasn't even at the club a couple of seasons ago. ???

Collins came onboard with Voss after the end of the 08 season didn't he? It might simply have been the player referring to that time. It might also be something that related to his job prior to coming onboard with the Lions (at the AIS I think from memory). Third possibility is the player simply misrecalled how long Collins has been there and the incident referred to relating to a time latter than he said.

Thanks for the heads up TLL. Its good to know that Voss is still held in high regard by the playing group nws the poor form.

This part I seriously don't get.... it does not sound overly professional to me.

This year I've only had 2 concerns about the Lions - not the poor form, turnovers, injuries, whether Voss could coach, Fev V Bradshaw, Rischa to Carlton etc - but a comment when Voss said that as soon as the medical staff tell me he (Jonathon Brown) has an injury that I will asess his position - after 2 weeks of Brownie being unable to accelerate or turn and the other is the issue raised in this post.
