Universal Love Dan Houston

Last week I calculated the B&F votes from R12 onward to see how Chad fared post midfield move. Pretty staggering to discover that Houston was 2nd only to Westhoff in our last 12 games! Such a reliable player.

Happy to be wrong - I had assumed that the rookie list even playing all games paid worse than a main listed player.
Yes that would be the case if they only paid rookie the minimum amounts, but they can pay more than that. Houston's manager would have made sure he got paid what he deserved and the club was trying to look for a salary cap advantage as part of the payments to rookies are excluded from the cap amounts.

PORT ADELAIDE defender Dan Houston has signed a three-year contract extension which will see him remain at Alberton until the end of 2022.

Selected at pick 45 in the 2016 Rookie Draft, Houston, 21, has played 39 games since debuting in 2017.

The reliable backman played all 22 games in 2018 and won both the Gavin Wanganeen Award as the best player under 21 and the Coaches’ Award as the most improved player.

His contract extension comes after he was rewarded for his consistency last month when he was upgraded to the senior list.

He needs his own "*******" thread. It's time.

What a phenomenal player this guy is. He's tough as coffin nails, kicks like an absolute pro and he was a rookie pick!

Can't have been easy for him. He wasn't picked up in the AFL draft but instead fell to 3rd round of the rookie draft. Was drafted as a forward but didn't cut it. His career could have easily ended there, but here we are.....he's put the work in and is now one of our most reliable defenders who will easily play 200+ for us.

He’ll never get much recognition outside of Port Adelaide but what a player he is! Reliable, consistent, dead-eye shot for goal, composure of a 200 gamer and rarely puts a foot wrong. First there’s elite level skills, then there’s Dan Houston level skills!

He could captain this club one day.

He was captain of his u18s side.

Many of our umpteen-time premiership players got no recognition outside of the club but what counted was their premierships and the recognition from the Port Adelaide faithful.

Houston is doing well.

Co-captain (really!)

Super composed, wins one on ones, can kick and for an ex-forward appears to have natural defensive instincts.

Don't know who at the club identified him as a defender but kudos to them and obviously him for making the transition work so well.

Houston did himself. He didn't think he was going to get an opportunity playing as a forward and so he requested Hinkley to give him a chance as a defender.
