No it hasnt been discussed in this thread but thanks for pointing out he has tattoos and a scruffy beard.

He looks good enough to me!

How the hell is swan "as overrated as they come"?

Has all those accolades and is currently a top 10 midfielder.
Only: Ablett, Mitchell, Pendlebury, Selwood, Fyfe, Dangerfield and Griffen currently have any right to be assessed as a better mid in 2014.

Have you watched any games this year?o_O

Interesting article in the Sun by Jon Ralph putting forward the argument that Swan's resume is comparative to the greats.

When did I say he was a hack. He's as overrated as they come though. Good player but not elite, due to his lack of accountability for his opponent, and his woeful disposal. Rated based on quantity of disposals.
If Swan is only a "good player" and not elite, then there must be very, very few "elite" players in the comp.
Perhaps with your great wisdom, you may be able to enlighten us to whom they are. It shouldn't take long, as there must be only a handful.

Dunno what you need to do to be elite these days but surely this qualifys.

He is an absolute champion. Loves the way he goes about it and love his attitude. It works for him! Sure he isn't "silky" like pendles and ablett but he steps up when it counts and is an absolute ball magnet.

The list would be as follows

Ablett

That is all!

Typical that we'd get him running into form. Would prefer it if he wore some pants tomorrow night though because those leg tatts are bloody shocking.

Griffin=Griffen? His form has been down a bit this year I would think...

the one and the same, sorry for the obvious miss spelling of his name. Shame on me.
he has but my opinion is only those players can play as good or better then swan in the midfield.

Player careers have ebbs and flows, even during their prime. My comment was directed at that fact, but I suspect you knew that already.

Dont believe everything you read about Swans form being down early in the year. He's one of the most consistent performers in the game, his lows are never far from his highs. He does however tend to be a slow starter both through the year and also intragame.

Favourite player outside Richmond and he's a Collingwood player... Great endurance and work ethic, really underrated still I believe. Has been consistently performing for the last 5 or so years. Also an awesome guy to boot as well. Envious of Collingwood that they have Swanny AND Pendles.

People regularly bag him for his disposal but I find that he has a better ability to break open a game than Pendles, Mitchell etc who are more polished. Rather than being overrated, I believe that those who don't have him as the 2nd best player of the last 5 years are underrating him. He is great overhead, has a great goal sense, great acceleration, and is one of the best at finding the ball. Also he is very strong and hard to tackle. Jus because his game isn't silk doesn't have any bearing of the effectiveness of it. He is also no less accountable in the Collingwood midfield than Beams and Pendles, although all 3 have been found at times wanting in their defensive accountability, something that often comes with many elite mids.

Absolute gun!

Ablett is so far ahead of the next best player which makes him the only elite player of the comp.
If you want to break down elite into teams then yes every team has at least 1 elite player.
In my humble opinion Pendles is by far the out and out elite talent at Collingwood with 3-4 others not far behind.

Could you clarify what you mean here? Are you saying Pendles is clearly the best but not a lot?

That'd be most peoples opinions I'd wager. You could almost replace any other cog in your midfield engine but not Pendles. Mind you, Swan isnt far off Pendlebury but he's clearly number one in my eyes. If I were to pick the top 3 mids in the comp id go Ablett, then Pendlebury/Selwood.

Swan has been the second most consistently excellent mid in the comp since 2007 and there woud be a long gap to 3rd. Hard to mount a serious argument that Ablett isn't number 1. Pendlebury is arguably a better player than Swan and due to ball use but it's hard to find a Collingwood mid in my time who has impacted more wins than Swan and that includes Buckley. Swan had an illness and wrist surgery in the pre season and played early with a groin injury. His for dipped to his worst run since 2007 which amounted to 3 average games.

Sam Mitchel is probably next off the top of my head in terms of consistent high end performance over a sustained period and possibly the mosty under rated player in the comp. I don't he has the impact Swan has but if Swan is the measuring stick then everyone bar Ablett is a Dwarf. I'm a bid fan of Watson but he hasn't done it for as long as yet.

Plenty of other gun mids that have had very good performances over a longish period. Cats have a few.
