I think Swanny played a number of similar games last year, particularly in the first half of the year. He will always get 30+ possessions, but sometimes the impact just isn't there. His laconic personality and playing style probably make him something of an easy target when things aren't going well too. I'm not really happy with how he's playing, but he's in the same boat as half the team there. I'm confident he'll come good, from memory he has a good record against Port and he should be fired up from the flak he's copped this week.

Sums it up pretty well I think.

I've never noticed a lack in defensive pressure/interest in his game before, he'll come out next week and get 35+ with 8 tackles and a couple of goals IMO, so i'm not that worried about his form, it just isn't like him, that's all.

Um, I didn't literally mean Buckley's or Scott's personality has won or lost games.

I was using the word personality do describe a new person. ie. Chris Scott is a totally new personality to enter the GFC. You could also instead use the words; figure, individual, etc etc.
...and clearly ignoring the rest of the post which puts the comments into perspective. I could easily select a single sentence in any number of posts on these boards and draw ridiculous conclusions as you did but then I might be labelled a troll and carded very quickly.

Everyone has quiet games or hit flat spots in their careers, I think the main problem is that he didn't seem to care. Pendles for example had a quiet game but you could see he was busting his gut to try and make an impact. Even when Judd gets tagged out of a game you can see the amount of effort he puts in, I'm not sure the same can be said for swan. Obviously he's a different style of player to the other two but he seems to lack their desire to take over a game when things aren't going so well.

It can't be. That's the thing.

I don't care if Swan doesn't get 30 possessions. As I said earlier, I'd rather he gets 15-20 and hurts you with them.

Or if he IS playing shithouse, then at least do the things that ARE within your control regardless of form. Lay tackles, put your body in, block, shepherd, all those things that only laziness can you stop you from doing.

All good points Ed and I agree that he wasn't damaging with his possesions but neither was Pendles, Thomas, etc...

Are we critical of Swan's individual performance on a night where the entire midfield stunk? :)

Lets play the long game on this and reserve judgement until the mid-season point.

It might be a perception thing...but it does look like he doesn't care. Maybe winning the brownlow wasn't a good thing, its not like he'd be the first player to have a down year after winning the brownlow.

Though what did concern me was him announcing that he will be retiring in a couple of years.

The moment you start looking forward to retirement, then your probably done.

When L Brown announced he was retiring, I said at the time that he should be dropped. And really, I think the same should apply to Swan. If he's already thinking of retirement at 30, witch isn't really that old, then to me, it appears that for the next couple of years he'll just be going through the motions.

If thats the case, then we should be looking to off load him at the end of the season. I'm sure he'd have a ball partying up at the Gold Coast.

Ah, but here's where the difference lies.

Round 1 - Pendles starred, Thomas average, Swan poor
Round 2 - Pendles starred, Thomas not bad, Swan poor
Round 3 - Pendles poor, Thomas poor, Swan poor

See the pattern? Pednels and Thomas being poor was a one off. Swan has been poor all season so far, and was also poor during the NAB Cup. He has carried his CBF attitude into the season.

All my criticism thus far hasn't been over 1 game, it's been over 3.

Why wait for Swan to play 10 shit games before saying something? Too late. It's clear there's an issue when an elite player plays poorly 3 games in a row. Why not nip it in the bud nice and early?

^ Was he that bad against the Hawks? You're right though, he isn't going through a purple patch is he? :)

I've enough faith in the systems at the club that they can and will help him turn it around (unless he's carrying an injury).

James Clement retired young but at least he did not announce it a year or two before he did it. Only when the season was dead and buried did Clement tell the football world of his decision.

And I bet Clement didn't have the drug testers beating on his door at 6am every few months while he was playing. You can tell that he led a squeaky clean lifestyle just like Ball or Buckley.

Unless you think Buttifant is responsible for the injuries players got last year and over the preseason I'm not sure how you can come to that conclusion. The players have all said that each preseason has been tougher than the last.

We had 2 injuries last year, Reid and Jolly in the prelim and Reid carried it over into the GF significantly. Yet the teams effort dropped off in being able to hit contests and cover the ground.

And yet here we go again, can't make contests, can't spread, and just fall away badly about halfway through the 3rd quarter. If you look at the fatigue on the players compared to the opposition at the moment it's a ridiculous contrast. If this is planned it's backfiring. Buttifant is making errors.

wtf? Makes it even more unjustified with that reasoning...

Some will surely vehemently disagree but Swanny needs a bit of a rocket! He just isnt delivering to his normal standards atm, and it's not good enough from a senior player of his ilk.

Last year the Dane was top 2 or 3 (at the Club) for contested possessions, top for clearances, tackled (double the number), had better DE%, was in the leadership group, wasnt talking about retiring, kicked about 1.3 goals per game and won Charlie - generally was awesome.

He did have a down patch (he looked sore) from about round 9 (Crows game) to the Arizona freshener - but then really hit his straps - his first four or five games were also good too iirc.

For me it's a major worry for Swanny to be way down in "Didaka" voting (1 solitary vote so far!) - i'm sure he wouldnt be doing too well in the Copeland either - last year's Didaka almost reflected the voting in the Copeland.

This year, i expected more of the same but i'm not seeing it - i would like to see more of last year's numbers - he is down across the board as i posted in the 'critical assessment thread'. The two that really stand out for me are - contested possies down from 13 to 9.5 and clearances from 6 to 3.7.

I am sure people expect Swanny to reach his standards and i expect him to reach them! He is a senior player and should be leading by example! There is no slack left to cut him unfortunately as losing Bally he will be expected to raise his intensity along with the others. Pendles, in stark contrast, has already shown great improvement in his intensity and even including his shocker against the Blues is ahead in his averages on last year!

Dane, and believe me i am an armchair slob, please immediately improve in these areas for the sake of our footy club mate - we need you to it now - please!

/end of hysterical rant!

His overall numbers don't concern me, what concerns me is his disposal numbers are similar to normal but his defensive numbers are way down, if he was injured or hampered in some way you would expect both sets to be down, all players go through form slumps, but this looks to be something brought upon by workrate, 5 tackles as a clearance player after 3 games simply is not good enough, and, if he wants to go around with his current 'i'm so fking good i don't need to try persona' he should expect the heat.

Yeah he was much, much improved. You could see by his willingness to not just win the ball, but stop Port from clearing it. His overall game was a little off still, but I thought he was great with his effort and intensity and that's all you can ask for as a supporter. Needs to make that the standard for his defensive effort, especially now without Ball.

Can anyone tell me how to put someone on ignore please?
