I think Didak could easily become that Akermanis type player for our midfield. He has very good speed and excellent accelleration (watch those games where he's has a run in the midfield and he scoops up a ball hitting the deck and runs away with it) and he knows how to kick a goal. He is also quite detirmined and puts in alot of 2nd and 3rd efforts so he won't be found out on his defensive game. He probably just needs to learn how to play the contested ball a bit better.
Great call :thumbsu:

Can't recall any Pies fan predicting Swanny would turn into the star he is now so no shame in those early calls. Even he admits he was lucky not to be cut.

Then: He was lazy and ran like a car with square wheels (still does). Not exactly the qualities you look for in a young player.

Now: Swanny having 25 touches means that he's had a shocker. :D

To be fair, understudy always had big wraps on him

Great research to find this post!

He did seem very ordinary the first few years. I stopped paying him a lot of attention assuming he was another player that would eventually be delisted and forgotten.

I remember the first couple of games that he picked up 25+ possession and being really surprised. I thought, "That Swan guy was good today ..and the last few weeks too. Where has this come from?" Still, I never would have beleived he would continue to the level he has in the last 2 seasons.

Does anyone remember which was his break through year?

Jabso, epic call. Good Call/Bad Call. Possibly the best call. Although I'm waiting for him to be returned to the forwardline CALL!

Swan, funny how he was average in every department, but a few people said he needed muscle which happened and then all his departments grew together making him the complete player. He was never going to dominate one area but great work ethic has got him to elite status.

I remember a break out game on the half back against Geelong late in one year (we were out of finals race) and I thought this kid is a ball magnet but then I realised playing half-back in a poor team you're going to attract the ball haha!

Find some more of this threads please. Maybe one saying Kinnear or Lokan or Jason Wild were going to be guns or something embarrassing.

The perfect example of give kids time and not make rash decisions too, early on.
Will Gayfer was a CHB/CHF type that was massively overrated before the 2003 draft. He didn't get picked up in the draft that year, and don't think he ever made it to any AFL club(?).

Very happy we kept Swanny.:D

Definitely 2006, although it was 2005 that we finally got to see a bit off what Swanny could do (that run down on Watson and goal on Hird for example). But yeah, 2006 was when Swanny started to rack up the disposals and have bigger impacts on game.

And obviously he's just got better and better since then. :D

I saw Swanny playing HB for us against Brisbane at the Gabba in '05 in a shocking game where we failed to kick a goal in the first half and got pumped by about 12 goals.

Despite that, he just seemed to win a truckload of footy that night and I'd have had him in the best handful of players on the ground. I watched him closely that year and he just continually won the ball. Then he went into the midfield a bit more in 06 and the rest is history.

who the hell is this gayfer that everyone was so keen on

I seem to remember Mick Gayfer as a guy who played quite a few games with the Pies.

IIRC, he was a dour, blanketing type backman, not unlike Presti, but a bit shorter hence didn't take the key forwards.

An interesting aside in that thread, was a comment that perhaps O'Bree could be replaced in the midfield.

Gee, he certainly kicked on, and held his spot for 6-7 years afterwards.

^ not the same Gayfer mate.

Mick Gayfer is a 1990 premiership player and master blanketer.

I'm not sure if he is related to the same spud referred to in this thread as being some superstar potential draftee in 2003.

Iirc it is Will Gayfer, was talked about as a certainty to be picked up but no club went near him, im sure he is a nephew of micks.

I've got to admit I never really had much faith in Swan making it as a footballer. Then I remember him playing a game on the HFF and he had a passage of play where he won out in a contest by reading the play better than his opponent as well as beating him with strength before drilling a ball to a leading forward. I thought then, geez this bloke can actually play. Ironically it was the same pocket where I remember being convinced Pendles would be a star, but Pendles beat his opponent with evasiveness. Malthouse does love using the HFF as a position for players to earn their apprenticeships. Blair, Beams and Sidey are all doing theirs now.
