Dangerfiel AFLPA view is games are too long!

Claiming the majority of footy fans have a low attention span is essentially claiming he thinks the majority of footy fans lack intelligence and can’t focus.

That’s a pathetic claim to make. Time for him to bugger off as he slips into irrelevance as his career is coming to an end.
lol if you think he wont be a fixture on foxfooty for the next 30 years after his retirement

Patrick Dangerfield should step down immediately as President of the AFLPA.

His comments can't even be taken out of context, it is literally word for word what he posted.

It's hard to count the number of issues with his comments, with the biggest issue being him essentially calling footy fans stupid and/or lacking mental capacity. Granted, there are some genuine low IQ fans all over the place, but attention span is something fans do not lack. For a lot of fans, especially those that attend games frequently, footy is their life, sad but true, it takes up a hell of a lot of their attention and time.

Fans do not forget, Buddy was booed in one of his last games at the MCG not because of race or some kind of jealousy like the media tried to portray, he was booed because he was a sniper rat who the AFL protected and would downgrade his suspensions. It was the first time Collingwood fans at the MCG had a chance to show their outrage over Buddy's Round 1 hit on Sam Collins that in a normal universe would have received a 4+ match suspension, but was only given 1.

The spud thinks fans have low attention spans? It wasn't until round 8 that Collingwood played Sydney lol, anyway, Patty is a low IQ nuffy who has nfi and is probably just a mouthpiece for the AFL. The issue isn't long quarters, the issue is all the ****ing around during stoppages, time to throw a ball in, time to review a goal, time to get the ball moving after a goal, time given to take a set shot and the stupidly long breaks between quarters and halftime etc etc, but the AFL will never admit that they need this time for advertisement, nope, they will reduce quarter length before anything else.

Anyway, long post but I do not doubt fans have the attention span to handle it, doubt Patty does though.

Good on you Paddy- always a thoughtful contributor. An idea that is worth considering too.

They going to take a pay cut?
Maybe cut costs for fans too?
Good points.

Players have too much rights when it comes to the AFL.

I still say the minimum playing salary cap of 95 percent is too much.

It should go down to 90 percent.

North Melbourne is struggling in the last 5 seasons and they struggle to pay their salary cap.

Richmond turfed out most of their old players and drafted lots of kids.
So how do they make the 95 perce t of the salary cap if the salary cap is 17 million dollars ?

Sounds like Dangerfield wont stop until AFL players are on equal footing with the commitment required at your local Ammo league. Off course, increasing multi-million dollar player salaries are not up for debate.

Those short quarters were tripe in the COVID year. I think there is a thread on here somewhere with something like 98% voting to keep them at 20mins. I'm a big traditionalist and love comparing stats. Shrinking the Qtrs seriously ****s with that.

I am Patrick Dangerfield

Classic Geelong aging players want shorter matches so they can match it with younger teams. They've already campaigned and got their way on other rule changes via sHocking so no doubt this one will go through too.

Remind us who has the best winning percentage across this era of long games, and who is the butt of ‘too old’ jokes each and every season.

Don't mind it. Memberships are getting pretty expensive, so that would (I assume) come down to a more reasonable figure.

Clubs will like it as well with players taking pay cuts. GMs will be over-the-moon, especially if the TPP stays the same.

It’s a simple solution, keeping in mind there’s 20-minutes of actual playing time every quarter, whether a quarter goes for 28-mins or 37-mins.

So simply throw the ball up quicker. Make boundary throw ins quicker. Reduce 1/4 time and 3/4 time by 1-minute each. Reduce half time by 3-minutes.

Walah …. you’ve saved 10-15 minutes off the length from start to finish without sacrificing a single second of action.

AFL players play only 23-games a season - and even then only 10% of players actually
play every game. They get 20-weeks of leave across the calendar year. There’s 4 (5) players on interchange so most players only play 70-85% game time.

Danger needs to stop flogging a dead horse … almost nobody wants shorter quarters so hush Danger … hush.

Interesting discussions this week about players having too much time off to prepare.

Dangerfield also came out with games should be shorter.

His argument is its too tough on players. And f we decrease supply then demand will go up. A basic economic principle that I'm not 100% convinced applies in this case.

What would be interesting is results and percentage for and against if say quarters were reduced by 3 minutes. A game is 12 minutes shorter.

We all know weaker teams can at times match stronger teams but not for as long. The "junk time goals" where mature established sides simply have more endurance and roll over sides in the final minutes of each quarter.

We likely would get more closer games and more upset results. Which is a good outcome for viewers and the game.

It would be interesting to see historically what results would have been if each quarter was 3 min shorter.

Would we have a closer competition with more close games?
I think that's a pretty simplistic way to look at it. Shorter quarters will just mean that teams - particularly mature ones - will restructure their fitness around the shorter timeframes. The likely result IMO is that the experienced teams will be bigger and stronger whilst still able to run out quarters.

The salary cap minimum is a huge issue - although obviously the AFLPA support it. A team that has finished bottom 2 for 3-4 years in a row should be in a position that they can easily outbid other teams for at least 1-2 grade A players per year. Insanity that this isn't the case.

I'm going to assume this is sarcasm.

Oh boy, you are in for some kind of treat this year then...
Yes, we probably are. I won’t enjoy it when it happens to us (who does), but I still wouldn’t want it out of the game. I even turn on dead rubber games sometimes if the scoreboard starts getting wild. Maybe it’s morbid curiosity

All good, just taking the proverbial ;)

He'll be pushing for work-from-home soon.
Don’t laugh. 😆
