Yeah Danger never gives the ball off to his teammates, what with him having...

*checks notes*

...more goal assists than any Geelong player other than Hawkins since he arrived at the club.

It's not never (and was not stated as such), but there have been glaring examples.

The Melbourne final when Ablett was in the clear was worse.

If you see that vision do you think premiership team? You know it's not happening yeah.

You can cherry-pick any random incident from any player throughout the season to create a narrative like that.

On the other hand, Danger record in creating many opportunities for his teammates is just a narrative-free statement of fact.

If you hold the record for smashing the ball inside 50 ever in a season of course goals are eventually going to result.

I'm confused as to the point you're trying to make here.

Could be wrong but don't think a goal resulting from a random kick into the forward fifty counts as a goal assist.

Nup. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. As I said, can't say for sure but even Garry snr I can't recall.
Not disputing he is a brilliant player. I've said as much.

Was that when they were on the wing? I remember losing it when I think he and Ablett were in front of the members and he just ignored everyone and slammed it on the boot.

His form in 2016, 2017 and even 2018 was phenomenal, and in his prime. Even last year he was very good, I’ve noticed a drop off but he’s 30 now, so I think his best footy is behind him. Still in the top 10 players in the comp easily.

I wonder what percent of it is simply dangerfields abilities compared to him being selfish.

some players have poor awareness of those around them and can have tunnel vision a bit. He just grabs it and guns and blazing forward majority of the time.

Yeah often it is. Sometimes Danger gets accused of blazing away when a lot of the time it's just left up to him though.
In this case it certainly wasn't that. Coach even after the game said it's just part of the Danger show.

Dusty Martin’s form has dropped too.

Martin just doesn't have the same team to work with at the minute which is why he doesn't look anywhere near as brilliant.
Injuries are hitting Richmond in recent seasons.

It kind of makes me appreciate guys like Simon Black, Nathan Buckley, Matty Richardson even more. They had to spend a good portion of the back of their careers in truly woeful teams and they still starred on a weekly basis without very little dip in their usual brilliance.

as fans I often think too it’s easy to see options open that a player should go to. It’s a great perspective from the grand stand or watching on TV to see it. Think in the heat of it out on the field these decisions can often get made in a split moment without much Thought which is a hard thing for fans to see and is more something people who have played at the top level could talk about.

I think from a young age he has always had the mentality and to an extent been encouraged that when he gets the ball to just back himself in to break lines and take on his opponents given his rare explosive abilities.

thing is he takes it another level and often does it to the detriment of others including a lack of summarizing other options.

some players just naturally are brilliant at reading the play and situation around them like Gaza is simply the best ever at it. I don’t think dangerfield is very good at assessing his options, but often it’s too much and to an extent self inflicted due to his own attitude.

would you change much about his career and take away some of those bursting explosions from him?? I wouldn’t.

maybe moving forward he has to temper it a bit and learn to assess options around him more so. Possibly go back to a forward role like he started out his career as in his twilight.

gazza is a perfect example of an old player who adapted his game perfectly to the changes with his body and capabilities, I wonder if dangerfield has the footy smarts to do the same

I agree with all that. But this particular incident was not one of those times.
Got a free kick 55 out on a 45 degree angle.
Looked at a player on his own in the goal square waving his arms for 20 seconds, took the shot and kicked it out on the full.

Everyone makes a mistake Spazz. And everyone has flaws. Dangerfield has made mistakes and has flaws. He's also put his heart and soul into spurring the team on since he's arrived. Let's focus on that, yeah?

I have thought for sometime that he is lazy he just labours along and is a down hill skier.

His goalkicking is really sub standard.

The main reason i think he is too confortable now ,perhaps not hungry enough had our chance last year in prelim and blew it.
You watch his setup and run up to kick for goal. His body is not stable and he wobbles the ball around too much. It is not surprising that he misses so many, oh and let's not forget nearly running into the man on the mark.

I reckon he is carrying something and has been since the inexplicable move to FF in the 2019 prelim.

can say spazz has quoted many times to me how good dangerfield is and what a gun he is, and his record speaks for itself really. Brownlow medalist,B&F winner, multiple AA awards, MVP award.

what is less discussed are his weaknesses. All players have them. Even the greats such as dangerfield Buckley Voss etc have weaknesses.

Yeah. I think his bloody phenomenal. But yes, even the greats have their flaws.
Even the greatest of them all had his flaws. Used to miss a lot of goals, not that great at bringing teammates into the game.

Noticed he spent a bit of time in our goal square on the weekend. Even the commentators where saying “Hawkins is on fire and they’ve moved Patrick to the goal square”? I think he is carrying an injury. I’d love to see him play out of the goal square with Constable replacing him in the midfield... but that ain’t going to happen....
