But how are Carlton going to give the AFC a high pick if Dangerfield nominates to go into the National Draft, and they have to use pick 1 to get him? Dangerfield can be forced into the draft by the AFC refusing any trade offer for him, but he can't be forced into the Pre-Season Draft. This used to be possible, but list lodgement dates were changed to prohibit this from happening.

Trades have to be of commercial value and signed off by the AFL. Promising that you will match an offer for a free agent and then refuse to trade them so they end up in the draft is not what the AFL deems as being worth commercial value. That's draft tampering. For Carlton to give us high picks, we'd have to give them tangible assets that are commensurate with the value of those picks. Trading Dangerfield to Carlton with his consent would be an example of a tangible asset worthy of high picks. Forcing him into the draft so they can pick him is not.

You might be able to engineer a scenario behind closed doors in which we do a trade with Carlton that slightly favours the us. But we can't do what you propose and then turn around and trade Mackay and Wright for pick 1 and Troy Menzel.
Yep your right. What was I thinking. Carlton cant use pick no 1 twice although I am sure a few years back they might have tried.

 Huh? ......so your're saying here that George Horlin Smith is worth a first round pick (9)......oh cmon

Two first round picks are the starting point ..plus a player

Given you're rebuilding you won't want to give too many picks away + you still have Henderson to trade for

Two first round picks won't hurt us long-term. We built our three premierships on players from Pick 30 on in the draft, and only Selwood, Bartel and Mackie were top ten.

Top ten picks are overrated anyway (how many teams who tanked for early picks have gone on to win flags- that's right- zero).

So we will back in flag contention within three to five years, with our promising youngsters having 100-150 games in them by then, and we will still have Selwood, Harry Taylor, and Hawkins, and of course, Danger.

You claim to have a far better list then us, yet only finished a game and a half ahead this year. Without Dangerfield, how many more will you win then us next year, do you think?

Where will Adelaide be by then?

We are not going to get his "worth" in any deal that occurs. here's hoping we get something that is at least hopeful of achieving his worth over time.
West Coast did for Judd ......no difference in the circumstances .....if we match & we will ..no difference

Worked pretty well for Hawthorn.

Incorrect.
in 2 years you lose Lonergan and Mackie and most likely Taylor
You need draft picks and you will be giving them away. Next year and the year after you may be ok.
But after that those 2 first rounders we get could have be 30-40 games in.
Geelongs list management would have been prudent to advise Dangerfield to sign for 2 years and get him for free. But the greed has gotten to you and getting PD will weaken your club for length of his career.

You may also lose the opportunity of bringing in Selwood and Henderson.

2 1st rounders and Murdoch…honestly can't see how either side can complain too much.

It's not as good as the Judd deal but it's reasonable.
FWIW I think Murdoch is very unlikely to want to leave. Geelong will consider him a required player, he signed a three year deal only a few months ago and he recently got engaged to a Geelong girl. He's clearly very settled here. I know Carlton pushed Kennedy out the door and Brisbane essentially did the same with Henderson, but I would be very surprised if Murdoch is put on the table.

You conveniently forget that Geelong has been the major beneficiary of Father / Sons ......now the rules have changed ...guess what YOU DO NEED TOP 10 PICKS

Yeah, under the F/S system we've had since then, and the one that's about to come in, picking Hawkins would have meant no Selwood.

Collingwood and Hawthorn say hello.

Hawks finished in the bottom 3 in 2004 and 2005. Got some pretty good picks that assisted in their premiership. They have won 3 premierships since then....and will probably win their fourth.

Collingwood got Daisy and Pendles in their 2004 /2005 bottom out years.

So....um....
