Just remember Dangerfield is a Restricted Free Agent…you will be the ones lobbying to change the rules unless you do a decent trade!
Once we match, free agency is inconsequential to the argument.
Yes. This seems to be the point a lot of people, including the Vic media, are missing. He is a restricted free agent, which is in place to protect clubs from losing the elite players they want to keep, or getting very little for them. Adelaide are absolutely within their rights to match the deal and trade, that's what it's there for.
Interesting language yesterday that he wants a move back to Victoria, not just to Geelong. Is that him saying 'if you make this hard for Geelong, I'll happily go into the PSD and go to another Melbourne club'? Because the last thing Paddy wants is to go to a Geelong (who IMO have a very average list and are in decline) without 2 years of 1st round draft picks. Pretty much goodbye any hopes of a flag considering where they're at now.
Remember Carlton effectively screwed themselves in the Judd deal. Sure Judd was a champion for them but I don't think there's any doubt West Coast came well out on top in that one. Geelong won't destroy themselves to get Danger, as much as they want him. Their proposed $800K is a sign of that.
And if he did go into the PSD with that number or even $1M, yes he would be picked up. For sure. Even if he and Connors told every club no (which they officially can't) you think arrogant clubs like Carlton or especially Collingwood wouldn't back themselves in take him and turn him around. Absolutely. The reason it hasn't happened before was guys priced themselves out with $ and years.
But to be honest, I think Geelong has always been a pretty fair club to deal with. If we go in there asking for the world, it could end badly and we lose a prized asset for nothing for the second time in a few years. Let's be fair about it and use what we get to build a stronger list.
