Daniel Cross (Melbourne)

Paul Roos won a premiership on the back of Nick Davis heroics, something the shittest club to have ever existed can not rely on. He also had an extra 10% in salary cap to play around with. McCartney on the other hand played an instrumental role in Geelong's three premierships, won with pure dominance and without dumb luck or bullshit like COLA. Enjoy the crash and burn next year, your expectations of "miracle worker" Roos have set you up for it :thumbsu:

I agree, McCartney is probably one of the best untried coaches you could land and his role as an assistant down in Geelong was instrumental in their 3 flags. I'm looking forward to watching him take the dogs to many many many preliminary finals in the future, it will be an exciting time my friend, watching the Footscray faithful flood the Werribee/Watergardens lines with their scrag dog pride :hearts:

Lets keep it on-topic from here on in thanks.

Daniel Cross will set the standard on the track for the Dees and will be a great leader.

More importantly, Melbourne desperately need another quality inside midfielder to take pressure off of Nathan Jones and the kids. Viney in particular was routinely thrown into a role beyond his maturity and physique.

On a related note, given Melbourne's lack of midfield grunt, why didn't James Magner get a run this year? His form in the VFL was unbelievable (e.g. at least one 50 possession game).

Very good move by Melbourne, I personally would like to see him go to a club with a chance of a flag before he retires, but nevertheless.

clearly have no idea, he definitely wont be our best player but his experience is SORELY needed
He might not win it but I'd back him for a top finish in your b & f, not having a go at your team at all, I still think Cross is a very good player.

how will he finish at yours?
He didn't finish top ten in ours.

But we have too many inside midfielders and you don't have enough, so given he will be playing a lot more footy/playing a lot more midfield he should do very well in yours.

really dont think dogs fans should be rating their side as high as they should, but hey what do i know

How am I rating is highly? I just said we had too many inside mids.

It's like if Jordan Lisle (just an example) came to bulldogs he would play every game as we have poor key forwards, but he wouldn't play at Melbourne as you have Hogan/Dawes/Clark.

Cross can't play for us as we have Boyd/Libba/Wallis/Smith/Hrovat as inside mids, something which you're weak in.

It's not about who is better, it's about filling a weakness in your team, which your inside mids are. It also happens to be our strength.

its not about having too many players, its about them being the fairest and the best...

but again, what do i know about the dogs side, however much that is, its clearly more than you know about melbourne

Way to have a proper discussion.

you made a very silly prediction saying cross who wasnt even in your top 10 would be top 4 for melbourne, the reason? coz you have too many inside mids...

yeah but im the one thats bringing this convo down
He didn't finish top ten in ours because he played in the VFL a lot and played a lot of games as a tagger, which he won't do at Melbourne as inside mids is not your strength.

I stand by that call of backing him to finish top five in your b & f as he should play 22 games as a main midfielder, plus your team overall is below ours (not that we are good).

Big call to say he'll finish top of our best and fairest, those other players you mentioned Smith and Horvat would they also finish as high? I understand the dogs have plenty of mids which is good for their future but I don't think they are ready to step up just yet, Horvat has only played 7 games, I think the decision to delist him wasn't the right decision, he's leadership would be great for these young dogs, I understand you also have Boyd and Griffen but the more leadership the better. I would happily have him at Melbourne.

No, he looked completely at home in that role and more than held his own

Precious much??

I think Viney performed admirably, but he essentially walked straight into second rung in your midfield, behind Jones (at least in winning contested ball). Which other draftee had that responsibility from day 1? Not even Whitfield or O'Meara.

His development will be greatly assisted by having another top shelf contested ball winner next to him, to relieve him and take pressure off at stoppages.

I see Viney as very similar to Libba, in terms of ability and size, and Libba really benefitted from having plenty of older and bigger bodies around him his first couple of seasons.

I said 'I'd back him to finish top five'.

I know what you mean, and I would of been more than happy to keep him, but we need to get games into Hrovat/Libba/Wallis. I know Hrovat has only played 7 games but he's showed enough to make the decision. FWIW I would of kept Cross especially since we also got rid of Lower.

All in all what I'm trying to say is Melbourne got a very good player, I don't know why that other bloke had to start being such a dick.

Yes, certainly an... interesting... call to suggest Cross would finish higher than most of Jones, Viney, Sylvia, Clark, Hogan, Frawley, Garland, Howe, Grimes, Watts, Jamar etc. Doesn't give the appearance of being the most informed of suggestions.

Though he would easily be one of our best midfielders, and provide desperately-needed leadership there, since as it stands now, the only guys we have who could be remotely described as senior players in midfield are Jones and Sylvia. With the only other mids older than 23 on our books being mature-age draftees, and three of those playing regular first-team football in our midfield being only 19, all in their first year

Matt Jones finished 4th in this seasons B&F for Melbourne.... If Cross plays 22 games I'd expect him finish top 5 or 6 and if N.Jones were to go down early in the season Cross would go close to winning it.

This being a year when our backline and our forwards spent almost the entire season in purgatory of the worst kind, owing to our midfield arguably being worse than GWS most of the time. Our rucks suffered in equal measure, given our obvious incapability at centre clearances for so much of the year also, given the hilarious lack of senior bodies in there by comparison with any other club.

And of course, Clark was out virtually the whole year. Jamar was out most of the time, Dawes half the year, Hogan ineligible, plus bloody Neeld had Watts playing in the wrong role up until he was dismissed. Once he was moved up forward, of course, he was providing about as good output as Jurrah during his best period with us, even with a midfield so manifestly incapable of giving decent service.

I get where you're coming from but I think you are severely underrating Cross. He will become an extremely valuable member of the Demons midfield.
