Daniel Cross (Melbourne)

He will become an extremely valuable member of the Demons midfield.

Oh I certainly agree with that. As I say, capable senior leadership in midfield is like gold to us right now.

:p
I am nothing like Bill Murray, I am fatter

Then why is it hard to see him finishing high in your clubs B&F especially with Roos coaching who will love Cross's two way running, leadership and willingness to fill a role?

Because while our midfield is so desperately and obviously lacking, hence why we can really use someone like him there (preferably two or three middle-age and older capable mids), our forward line and our backline aren't. So yeah, I think it's fanciful to see him finishing quite that high.

How old is Daniel Cross?

30. But he'd be fitter than pretty much any other 30 year old in the league. Age wont effect the way he plays. He's never been fast, so he's not losing anything. Still a fitness freak.

I think Cross is being severely under-rated here.

He finished top 5 in and our B&F practically every year until Macca moved Libba and Wallis into his role. It was one of those things where he was undoubtedly better than them, but we needed to have an eye to the future and not lose both Boyd and Cross playing that role at the same time. Since then he has been playing more on the wing/from the flank, and has been good without being great. It has paid off though, with Libba exploding this year. He is still definitely in our best 22, but once again we can't have Boyd, Cross, Murphy, Gia, Morris and Goodes all retire at the same time. So we have made the tough call (surprised Gia is still on the list tbh, as good as he was this year). I would have preferred to keep Crossy and moved on Boyd, but you can't do that to your captain who still has time in him.

He will go to Melbourne and play his old in-and-under role and I would think that he will perform to a level roughly the same as he did. It's great for the Dees as it's what they're missing. He will finish top 10 in the B+F, higher depending on how Watts, Clark etc go I guess.

okay so Melbourne have fallen for the recruit older players trick before, will they go again?
Melbourne haven't fallen for anything, because Cross won't be at Melbourne next year. It's a media beat up. He has a better chance playing for Albury Tigers.

Melbourne have definitely spoken to Cross about next year. Not sure whether it's going to happen. But the media beat is annoying. Guys like Jon Ralph will say it's almost a done deal then when it doesn't happen he will say a last minute change of mind or something!

No they haven't. Fact.

Viney said the Demons would speak to Cross again over the next week, and that the Bulldogs' 2008 best and fairest winner had indicated his wish to keep playing in the AFL. ''We've had a little chat with him just to find out what he wants to do. I think his main focus is he wants to play … We'll have a conversation in the next week or so.''

Viney said the Demons had spoken to Cross not only about the 30-year-old joining them as a player but of the possible role in sports science.

''We've had a chat to see what his interests are,'' he said.
Why are they saying they have spoken to him?

Big call to say he'll finish top of our best and fairest, those other players you mentioned Smith and Horvat would they also finish as high? I understand the dogs have plenty of mids which is good for their future but I don't think they are ready to step up just yet, Horvat has only played 7 games, I think the decision to delist him wasn't the right decision, he's leadership would be great for these young dogs, I understand you also have Boyd and Griffen but the more leadership the better. I would happily have him at Melbourne.
It was a line ball call, but we lack pace in the middle and quite a few argue we can't play Boyd, Libba, Wallis and Cross in the same side simply for team balance issues.

I'd expect Cross will add more off field than on field for the Demons - super-professional and very well regarded.

Have the utmost respect for the fella but he is not an AFL standard footballer anymore. If Melbourne want to start winning football matches then they would be well advised to look elsewhere for solutions to their midfield issues.

Yes he is. Its just we are tripping over ourselves for inside mids at the dogs. The form of Libba and Wallis has pushed out Cross and Lower, is all.

And he isnt a turnover merchant at all, because he plays within his limitations, which is to say he needs some runners around him to turn his possessions into attacking play. Very high disposal efficiency, very low hurt factor.

Don't get Cross, pardon the pun

Haha Viney had a 10 second conversation with him. Don't believe everything you read ;)

Yes, a chat. They did not speak to his management and probably haven't even offered anything yet.

I'm not sure why you have an issue with this, unless of course you just want to demonstrate your inside info on whatever is happening, which is fine by me. Which club is in the running?

My personal thoughts are that Cross still has a lot to offer at AFL level

Correct, nothing has been offered. The 'chat' was nothing ground breaking, we know he wants to play on, and we know his natural career path post playing career is sports science. Viney' 10 second conversation was to validate what he already knew.

Yes, I do have inside information. The issue is the beat up by the media, and the hysteria and assumption that he is automatically going to Melbourne (at this stage). Understandably, it is natural for the media to link players to club/s that need a position/s filled.

I agree 100%.
