Daniel Cross (Melbourne)

The reason Cross struggled at the dogs in the last year or so was the Libba and Griffen established themselves as number 1 and 2, leaving Boyd and rejuvinated Cooney 3 and 4, Lower then Wallis tagging and may as well have the rest as kids.

Now next year the dees will have Vince and Jones 1 and 2, Viney probably 3, McKenzie tagging but besides from that our next best mids are Tyson, Michie, Trengove and other kids. I'd be wrap if we only need Cross for 10 games and he's forced out by the end of the year.

He was under Minson in 2011 when he wasn't that good a ruckman. He's been under Hudson, who was never the best ruck in any year. And Street.

Cross has been fighting for the hard ball with that little body for his entire career.

He will deadset kill a man trying to fight for that hard ball. He'll be fine.

Between Jones, Viney and Cross all of a sudden the Demons don't look too bad for clearances. Michie and Tyson are meant to be good in the clinches too.

Roos is putting his stamp on the list immediately.

He won't be under Minson - best ruck in 2013 - he will be under Gawn, not a great tap ruckman.
I'd say Jamar, but he is shot to pieces.

So Cross will have to fight for hard ball, with that little body of his.
I cannot see Cross having a great year on field for the Demons.

I do believe he'd be as asset off field.

Little body? Bahahahaha

What exactly do you think we are expecting to get from Cross? A guy who will lead us to premiership glory?

Personally David Rodan played a few decent games and probably one good game against the dogs. Cross only has to better that to be a very good success. He's brought in to show the young players how to train and how to follow instruction and play the right way. That's all we really want.

But he's also only 30 and a lot of players can have a better year at 31 than they did at 30 or similar. See the way Kane Cornes revived his career this year. So it's not unreasonable to expect it could happen for Cross. He'll also get more opportunity at Melbourne than he would've at the dogs. The quality of ruck work really wont impact much of his game.

hate this move for the dee's

cross is finished i feel and will be another rodan-esque failure.

Not another Q Lynch, Russell and Clinton Young-esque failure. Because they are bigger failures than Rodan because you were expecting some form of success last year. Rodan was brought in only to be a bit player same as Cross and by a lot of measures Rodan was a success.

Melbourne supporters don't yet appreciate what a top clearance winner they have just picked up.

His kicking is fine, he just doesn't have the penetration over more than 45m. He's seriously slow, he always has been, but he will still be going at the same pace at the end when everyone else has slowed down.

Melbourne will have no-one harder at it and he will again be among the leaders in the AFL for beginning scoring chains, just like he always has.

He's a way better player than Melbourne supporters think.

Thanks I think the pick up makes a lot of sense for us, poor old Nathan Jones has been a lone hand in a developing midfield.

Rodan and Cross are not comparable acquisitions for the Dees. Cross was pushed out of the dogs 22 because we have a plethora of inside mids, and we are rebuilding. The dees are rebuilding also, but they need more grunt in the middle. The dee's rebuild is also a little different to the dogs, in that they are rebuilding from scratch, the culture and the player's approach to footy. Cross will help with all of the above.

Nah mate, we know

Cost us nothing, we have too many unproven kids as it is. Need some veteran presence and ball winners. Tyson and Michie are young ballwinners, Cross is a veteran ballwinner. Complimenting Viney and Jones, these three pickups are a good result for the Demons.

I like saying ballwinner.

I think they do it's been welcomed by the majority of D supporters and I can't wait to see him show the way for some of our younger kids.

Our most senior player at the moment is Nathan Jones, can you imagine that? He's 25 and he's played 157 games but he's played more than anyone else in the squad.

People are forgetting that if Cross comes to the Dees, he'll take on a similar role to Brogan and McDonald at GWS. He'll be seen as a mentor to our young mids.

Even though Chapman is a more talented player, Cross is a far better fit for Melbourne.

And he made the St. Bernards team of the century, so he must be good.;)

This is the addition Melbourne should be getting excited about.

This is the man who will help Jones, Viney and Michie get those clearances. Good work Melb :thumbsu:

can't measure culture.

And that's what he'd bring, he's not going to win the brownlow, but he's a fanatical trainer, great clubman and leader and a great bloke to boot.

he is a fantastic acquisition

I think he's a solid pickup for the Dees, especially as he cost nothing.

I'm liking what the Dees are doing so far this trade period.

Agree, wasn't a fan of what they did last year, outside of obviously Hogan. Seemed very scattergun. This year seems like their is a lot more purpose and direction.

The difference being that Cross was and still is a much better player than Rodan. Cross was pushed out of Dogs for youth but still played good footy when selected. I don't see why they can't get two good years out of him, and his hardness is exactly what the Dees need to set an example. They desperately need leadership.

If it hasn't already been done, what do Demons supporters think their best 22 will now look like? Something like this?
B: Garland Frawley Clisby
HB: Terlich McDonald Grimes
C: Watts Cross M.Jones
HF: Howe Dawes Trengove
F: Hogan Clark Tyson
R: Gawn N.Jones Viney
INT: McKenzie/Michie/Tapscott/Toumpass
Blease, Kent, Fitzy next in line
