sorry, you'll have to enlighten me on that one:confused:
I wasnt bagging Currie, just saying he isn't ready 'yet'

Nothing Ed's done in two years suggests he's ready for senior footy (or even a spot in my son's under-14s team) but he's had several chances.

Ready or not, Currie's a ruckman and we need a ruckman, but it seems we're going to play White out of position there when he NEEDS to be allowed to play forward.

Look, I'm sick of debating all this shite ... there seems to be several inconsistencies in team selection policy ... fck it, who cares.

What the hell has Ed got to do with this, I agree he has had 2 too many chances.

so back on topic, why do we need another 'new' ruckman for these 2 games. Pyke is there, and Jesse is more than capable of filling in temporarily, whilst still being a forward target IMO. Bringing in Currie under these circumstances in premature and only going to muck with the team structure IMO. He needs to be brought it strategically & at the right time, not as a knee jerk reaction.

Bring him in on his own terms

I think MR PB was referring to you saying "showing promise isn't enough these days". Seems Ed Barlow is getting picked on this alone.

That seemed to be his point.

And with Currie coming in, i would think Currie coming in as a straight swap would mess with the team structure LESS than moving Jesse into the ruck and having Henry come in. It's a like for like swap with Currie coming in and thus affects the team structure less.

Thanks for the feedback all..but, I have to ask therefore:

I know that he is signed up until the end of 2012, but, if he is isn't given the opportunities, then surely he would then need to look at other options.

Because, the player himself would be getting frustrated by the lack of opportunity already and that is never a good thing.

If it is 1 thing I've learned about my following of Essendon over 28 years, that if a player busts his guts in the reserves and doesn't get looked at for senior selection, he is more likely to walk than to stay.

How can he be not ready yet!? We drafted him in 06. I wish Roosy would just give him a go, especially this week.

And spent 07 playing Schoolfooty in the ACC for Parade College, he was taken as an underage, he's had injury trouble through his first couple of seasons. Im hearing he's raw but getting closer. You just need patience with the big men sometimes. look at Mumford, overlooked for drafting and came on later to look top notch.

He has to play next week. Put no expectations on him so he can just go out and see how he goes. I know its a big ask against Sandilands but we don't have much hope with White and Pykey. Come on Roosy give him a go!

It just seems to make sense for him to have a go. Would allow Jesse to stay up forward.

But from what i heard of Roosy in the after match thing it seemed like he would stick with Jesse and Pyke. That could be me reading into too much though.

If Bradshaw isn't available next week, surely Currie has to get a go. We may not win games with White as our main tall target but we certainly won't with Playfair there. And White seems to be struggling to have any impact as a ruckman - not just at bounces where he could be expected to have a disadvantage but around the ground too, where he should be able to dominate against a bigger, less agile opponent.

Who knows if Currie is ready? But he certainly has talent, footy nous and isn't as young or as skinny as plenty of others currently playing. Even if he just gets one game, it surely can't be bad for him.

My feelings exactly Liz.

But if there is one game that Roosy can point to and say something like "it won't help his development by getting smashed by a bigger body" or something along those lines, it is against Freo and 211. I have a feeling he might use such a reason.

I'd put him in there and give him a go anyway. But wouldn't judge him too harshly on it. If he steps up and does some good things, all the better, but being soundly walloped by 211 is nothing to fear. He does it to everyone. It just helps our structure if White is up forward (especially if Bradshaw foesn't play again).

I agree that Dan Currie deserves a shot at the big time (ahead of Playfair) but again I put it into the "Roosey knows best" file.

He simply will not play players that he feels aren't "physically ready" to match it AFL footy and while I don't always agree with the logic, it is hard to argue with his record and as shown by Nick Smith and Grundy, when they do grab their chance he will back them to the hilt and give them some "big matchups".

It can be frustrating to see guys like Bevan, Playfair, Barlow (even Richards recently come in and out, while Vez, Currie, MOD etc tear it up in the 2's, but it's almost like Roosy classifies players into 2 groups.

Fringy- given plenty of chances but also expendable after a loss

Long term prospects- have to walk over broken glass to get into the team, but once in they are given time to cement the spot.

His logic can seem flawed, but the players play for him and his record is second to none and more imprtantly doesnt burn out young blokes like hawks and bombers

I reckon Smith and Jack are two examples of player who probably weren't quite ready physically and didn't deliver much in early outings. But I reckon those early outings helped them get set for when they got a chance at more games the following year.

Currie may not have the self-confidence but if he doesn't after 4 years, it is hard to see how he's going to get it other than by being thrown in the deep end. Even if he completely panics the first few times he goes near the ball, he'll settle down eventually. And hopefully realise that it's not all that scary really!

I'd like to see him play but now that he didn't play last week against the Dogs and Jesse and Pyke got some good press about their performances i just dont think Roosy will do it. I hope he does but i think he won't want to put him in for his first game against 211.

For him not to be an emergency last week when everyone knew that Bradshaw was in doubt so he could either come in as a big forward or better yet as a ruckman so Jesse could go forward was very confusing from the outside looking in.

We all wish Currie would debut so Soph would shut up :o lol

HAHAHA
ill just warn u now the day he does ill probs go a little crazy but will then get nervous when he plays and then ill settle right down

haha yeah ur right ull be glad 2 see me shut up

Why do i feel this is directed towards me?

I feel i should be able to comment on Currie as i have seen a rather large amount of his games

2008 he looked great but Jolly and Everitt were ahead of him though at the end of 2008 he looked as if he was ready for a senior game but this didnt happen!

2009 he started out really strong but was struck down by a back injury and then later on a foot injury which finished the end of his season

I think he played all but one NAB Cup game this year and showed a lot of promise...Sure there were a few things to work on but he did come up against some hard sides! I thought his game Against St Kilda in the NAB Cup showed how good he was!

Hes been very good in the twos and is often seen in the bests actually here are some stats

Hes played all 5 of the ressies games so far
His bests game being against Belconnen in round 1 where he kicked 4 goals
hes been in the best 4/5 games

Hes been a great target up forward and he has a great pair of hands!

I really thought that in the situation that we are in now loosing both Seaby (for several weeks) and Mumford that this would be a great time to play Currie to give him the confidence and let him go up against some harder bodies! He and Pyke work really well together and it would also Allow Jesse to remain as a full forward! Currie must be frustrated to see someone who isnt a proper ruck (not that jesse doesnt do a good job) take over his role!

Sure if his tap work was a little under pressure put him up in the goal square hes 200cm hes got the height and is a really good kick!

But anyway i can write up about him but i guess this is the way the club wants things to work!

But really idd give the kid a go before he loses his confidence or suffers another injury!

Good call Soph, you sure know your ressie boys :thumbsu:
