Looks to be the perfect replacement Farren Ray sticky hands, good kick, big tank and a good burst of speed. Fits a real need on the wings for the Saints

Great call. I thought the same thing when I saw his highlights

Acres and DMac on the wings, with a little help maybe by a Markworth who's luck has changed...

hells, yes...

Injured at crucial times through last year and this year and been less exposed playing school footy with caulfield grammar
Perhaps he was the player being talked about on the pre-draft video of Trout and Co? they spoke of a kid with injuries who had played school footy and not had much exposure etc...

Yeah, Markworth will kind of be like drafting a slightly older recruit . With his bad luck its like hes starting again this yr.
Could be a bit of a smokey for us as a lot of people have forgotten or given up on him. But the kid was rated when we drafted him.

His style looks a bit awkward, but very very effective.

I thought that myself. He appears to have a high ball drop and chips the ball instead of drilling it. Bent elbow instead of straight elbow causes that. Perhaps explains why he went at 21 and not earlier?

Wait, wait, wait....

Ave sized midfielder with fantastic overhead marking?

Able to take the occasional hanger?

Rated highly for his work in traffic and ability to find a player in space?

Works hard defensively but can play forward and loves a goal?

We don't have an 'upgrade' on Farren Ray here. Nononononoooooooo... We have the next generation version of this handsome bastard -

Eli and Newnes also likely to be best suited to the wings, IMO, maybe Webster as well. Think we're looking pretty good there now.
The more options, the better! :thumbsu:

His kicking is supposed to be a big weapon of his though. The reason he didn't go higher is/would be that he didn't get more of the ball.
Is that because of his half back flanker role?

Something to note about DMAC is that there were a lot of clubs keen on him. He was interviewed by every single club and I'm pretty sure Hawthorn, Freo, Carlton, the Crows, North and the pies were all quite interested. I guess it can only be a good sign.

Possibly, but some of his stats this year were very low and considerably lower than the running types who went ahead of him in the draft, many of whom also played outside, flank type roles, hence them going ahead of him, I imagine.

While it seems that he was pretty highly rated by plenty of clubs, it may also be that a lot of clubs thought they might be able to get him relatively cheaply, because he had sort of come from no-where and played little part in the champs and so-on, so some of those clubs might have been thinking they were a chance of nabbing him later in the 20's, or even in the 30's or 40's, hence all interviewing him, just in case he was.

I think we got him right in his sort of range though, or at least at the start of it. I think most of those taken ahead of him just had more runs on the board and were seen as having at least as much ability, if not more and as such were "safer bets".

He seems to have an awful lot going for him though and probably fits our needs extremely well. Really looking forward to seeing him next year!

Yes, McKenzie has potential but let's just settle down a bit. Think it's unfair to compare him to JB right now. Let's see in a few years and if he can develop an amazing inside game. Then maybe we can start comparing him to Bartel

I think the only question now is did we get Mc Kenzie as a bit more of a smoky because of getting Goddard. I hope both make it but we seem to have gone one safe one high risk /high reward with 21 and 22.

I don't see him as high risk at all. Sure, there is still a question to what level he gets, but I don't see him as any higher risk than others taken behind him. There was talk the Saints were interested quite a few months back, which was largely the first time we had heard about him. Will watch with great interest over the summer.

This guy is gonna be a flipping gun for you Saints, you should be wrapt.

I wouldn't have minded if the Crows had taken him with #14.

(And who cares about his kicking 'style' - Brodie Smith's kick looks funny but it's just about the best in the comp).
