Free Agency Daniel Menzel [Off to Sydney after Swans give him another chance as a DFA]

Two different players totally.
You'll never see Menzel outside the forward 50 arc. Jack on the other hand, yes even in the final against GWS, was running his guts out to cover for the injured forwards that couldn't.

It's the excuse all Geelong supporters are using to justify why he was delisted
Not me.
Have stood by Dan up until now but agree with Mr Blicavs that he's cooked.
If he can get 2 years of the Saints he should take it and we should move on from him.

Before he was moved on in fact.
You’ll see, 2nd half of a season and he struggles to move and is less effective

Worth a gamble at least. Rather gamble on Menzel than take a bloke 100+ who is pretty likely to be average. If we manage Menzel it could work

Does that mean you guys end your interest in Townsend? I wouldn't have though you'd take both.
Sounds like we've already cooled on him. Swans stated that there as only ever one spot up for grabs and the rest will be used in the draft. It looks like you guys will rookie list him.

was reported we were choosing between the two so reading between the lines that sort of answers it.

Too talented not to be on a list, so good for him, but I'm confused by the fit.

I would've though with either Reid or Naismith (sending Sinclair forward) the Swans would play an extra tall plus Buddy and young McCartin as the 3 marking options. With Blakely an option as well. Hayward a nice medium 4th tall. Ronke and another flanker (ie. Jack replacement) as the running types. Then rotate Papley, Heeney and Parker as the 7th forwards.

Probably needs some depth in the running flanker types but in terms of goal kickers inside 50 I think there's 4 options - Buddy, Reid/Sinclair, Hayward, Parker/Heeney that can win match ups.

In which case their list priorities would be finding some mature midfielders to replenish that area of the ground that just lost Hannebery and is clearly coming down from a peak a few years ago.

A team that's been based around defensive play and already struggles to lock it in forward adding Menzel is a bit confusing to me. I could see him playing a lot of NEAFL next year.

Word is that Mills and Jones will move to the midfield more permanently. Right now Heeney plays just about every position on the field but I'm also hoping he gets more time in the guts.

We've recruited Thurlow as a half back flanker to cover those moves and Clarke as another HBF/wing gut runner.

I'm hoping our forward line looks something like:

HF: Hayward Franklin Papley
FF: Menzel Reid/Sinclair Ronke

Although McCartin did very well for his age he was thrown into the deep end very early and we should give him time to develop and be depth for injuries to our other tall forwards. I'm not sure if the ruck changes mean we'll back to two rucks with one resting forward or not. Sinclair should battle with Naismith for first ruck. If Reid is fit he'll be first pick in the forwards but if his injury woes continue then play Sinclair. Buddy roams the forward 50 arc and Menzel and Reid/Sinclair are your tall marking forwards. Should give us an actual forward structure and allow the small forwards a chance to crumb some more goals.

Jack should really be battling to be named in the firsts unless we have to cover injuries.

Heeney and Parker to rotate through the forward line when required.

Blakey might push for a spot but I see him, Dawson, Cunningham and Florent all providing options on the wing or high HFF. Gotta go revisit my best 22 again.

So essentially we're got ready made players to boost the midfield and we're really back filling their roles.

I want the ranga back. Will be a very very popular boy at Geelong before the end of next season.
Menzel is a list liability in the making. One we dont require.

I know the two clubs have a comfy relationship off the field, but we dont need either club doing sweetheart deals whenever the phone rings for a favour.
Its a business.
If he truly was in any sort of demand one of the Vic clubs would have thrown him a rope...and he would have taken it.

Now the fwd line looks stacked with stay home specialists that dont rotate with any impact, when we need a new generation of quality midfielders just to get it down there.

Will tolerate as long as we do not screw with and play Tom McCartin. Youngest guy in the game and did everything we could ask. He has the potential to be a seriously good mobile CHF and needs games games games.

Dont see a place for Menzel anywhere.

Nahh not happy.

Ridiculous post, injury free he is one of the best medium forwards in the game. We have plenty of pressure forwards who don't kick goals, we need another true forward to take the pressure of Buddy

As for McCartin, I agree he is going to be a beauty, but he was gifted games last year and needs more time to develop. Some time at NEAFL level isn't going to harm that, if he's good enough he'll earn his spot at senior level.

Not me.

Some truth in that but its an over exaggeration he kicked 27 goals from 13 games. His tackle count could have been better but his goal assists was on the up.It was odd that Geelong didnt give him a contract considered the squad is lacking depth.

It’s not the goals, it’s the agility.
You really do see it live at the ground.

2nd half of the year his ability to move around the ground really diminishes.

FWIW I was ok with offering another season but I do think his time is nearly up. His body is pretty crocked

So he wouldnt stay on 1 yr revolving deals, which considering his history is perfectly reasonable. He tells them he'll hold out for a multiple year deal, and leave to get it if need be.
Even the 1 yr offer gets pulled and he gets delisted.
Noone offers him the multiple year deal. Not a single club across SA or Vic offered so much as a 1 yr deal. Noone anywhere offers any deal in fact.

He did this last year as well didnt he ? 2017 ? Thought he could threaten his club with leaving to hold out for a longer term deal ?...then quietly settled for the 1 yr when noone was interested and his club called his bluff ?

So he's now happy to sign a token 1yr deal with my mob , despite having to uproot and move interstate, and despite all Geelong did to support his rehab o_O.

He's apparently such a good player that 17 other mobs simply cant see any of it ?

My guess is Mr Steve Johnson Esq. rocked into Horse's office with a last gasp mates request. Surely noone has management this bad. My second guess is that the rumours of disciplinary action when he didnt play last yrs QFinal may be following him around or hold water. The bloke kicked 4 over 3 consecutive wins leading into that game, and suddenly gets dropped for a Qualifying Final ? Something happened. You dont change a winning team leading into a final for no sound reason.

I never appreciate that feeling my club has sat at the very bottom of a big pile of clubs, then taken whatever fell between the cracks. That is not the way my club operates. Sydney should have been aggressively pursuing what we NEEDED during trade week. We failed to do that. Failed badly. We made excuses for them.

Been a forgettable season and an even more forgettable trade season. The worst part being the capitulations at the SCG. That is unacceptable at our club and just doesnt happen. Its looking very much like it wasnt merely the players at fault...but at no stage did i see a single coach take any responsibility. The club may need a off field overhaul sooner rather than later.

When i've watched Menzel in recent seasons he's been running on rails. He tracks straight lines for a reason and doesnt tackle much because he knows (and has been told) by the medico's it will likely result in the end of his career. At 27 i wont expect anything. What shits me is that we cannot show any faith in our own coaching team to elevate just one of our own from a 25 goal young fwd to a 40 goal fwd next season. Three young guys kicked 25-30 each, yet we doubt any can kick 40 ? Perhaps its the odd coach or administrator that should be delisted instead of the players.

I'm not buying what they're trying to sell me.

You simply do not delist a very popular 27yo, 2 goal a game fwd, then watch him fall thru all the cracks...for no good reason.

I do not want to see a single young Sydney prospect dropped for a ticking timebomb.

wasn't a fan oof signing him, but it is a low risk, high reward kind of thing. Wouldn't bee surprised if there are games played triggers for another contract.

Menzel >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rohan.

Weird preference from the Cats there.

100 goals from his last 51 games is a decent rate, second only to Hawkins at Geelong. It's an odd delisting. Yes, his scoring dries up somewhat towards the end of seasons, but it's still at a fairly good level, and all scoring does tend to dry up late in the season.

Bring in Rohan and punt Menzel, *******s.

Outside of Hawkins no-one else knows how to kick a goal at Geelong.(Kelly went alright with 24 for his first season)

Yay, let's get rid of a bloke who can kick goals but isn't the strongest tackler in the league and play blokes that can't kick goals and can't ******* tackle either.

It's the excuse all Geelong supporters are using to justify why he was delisted

Well well well injured already. It’s as if he’s cooked after all, sadly.

P.S. Don’t bother replying podgey, your views on football are worthless.

Soft-tissue pre-season injury doesn't normally mean a player is cooked. It's not classy to gloat over injuries so openly either.

Pissweak post. It's as if he's still not right from Geelong ******* his groin up and playing him hurt late in the season and final out of desperation.
