You can't be serious surely, The boy is 21 has had 3 knee ops in 18 months, potentially ending his career, his dream and the biggest thing in his life. Yes people deal with shit every day'but this is life changing shit.
Why should it be splashed all over the media for total strangers to comment until he is ready to let his feelings out.
He must have been under tremendous strain and yet he is doing it all over again.
I would suggest that he has more mental strength than the poeple taking pot shots at him for keeping his medical state quiet until he is ready. The club cares about him far more than keeping Big Footy posters informed, as they should !
Forget big footy that's rubbish, there are 40,000 odd Members and probably twice that number of supporters out there who the club have dismissed as irrelevant.I believe they could have hand it much better but then again they have an abysmal record of late in this area.
And IMHO publicity comes with the jumper you can't just turn it on and off because your having a bad hair day or what ever.

Well Balme said on his stint with KB this morning that there was infact a minor tear in the repaired graft ( seems to be differen't news to what has previously been reported by the club) which they repaired with a Lars type procedure. Hope to have him back up and playing within the first half of the year but this is certainly not good news imo
This post was what i referred to, YPO. Came out 2 weeks ago. Has been glossed over a little, but I have been referring to it over the past 2 weeks. Sounds like Balme didn't hide it, but didn't highlight it either back then.

Certainly puts a different complexion on things doesn't it,so all this they kept it a secret is a fallacy.

Applause for your opinion.. I just wonder how you would actually go in the spotlight... having people go through your rubbish, chase your kids through a park, follow you around all day taking photos as you discretely try and pick your nose...

Just saying it can be a very ugly environment and I personally have no problem with someone wanting to hold some things private while they deal with it....

And a 3rd knee proceedure in 18 months is hardly a bad hair day... but your flippancy was noted...

Go Catters

If it came out on Jan 18 or thereabouts, it was at least kept quiet for a while as the kid requested, since it happened before Christmas.
Keeping it quiet for a short while (in order to help the kid come to terms with it) did no harm to any legitimate public interest (as distinct from public curiosity).

I think YPO is wrong on this occasion.....but he has an opinion and is entitled to express it.

Sarah13 expressed it perfectly though IMO...and Fred put the icing on that cake with his post above.....your health is a private matter whether you're in the public eye or not, and the timing to make it public lies with the individual. If the kid needed a little time to come to terms with it, and inform those close to him privately before it was splashed all over the papers, so be it.

The rights afforded to you by paying a lousy membership fee only go so far.

I never agreed with the idea that as soon as you are in the spotlight you lose your right to privacy, I mean he just a kid he's entitled to keep his health private from the public.

Why the morbid fascination with what is and what's not happening with someone's private life/health, fair enough if it released via official channels with the player in question consent have no issues with that.

But just find YPO opinion sickening and disturbing.

My interest is in the football club,Dans hopefully successful recovery and the 2013 season ,I'm offended by the suggestion you have made, I have a morbid Fascination.
Nothing could be further from the truth,I have spent the last 3 weeks of my holidays as a volunteer assisting bush fire and flood victims in my local area no one there accused me of having a morbid fascination. how ever it would also be true to say I may never become the president of the Bleeding Hearts Club either.

And if Dan has your philosophy on the media (and I hope he doesn't) he maybe should join Natan Ablett on the Gold Coast now because it's not going to go away, example Tom Lonnergan his name can't be mentioned anywhere with out his sickening injury being added. As Dan will always be linked to his strings.
That's life.

You're missing the point did Tom ever ask the club not to release any details on his injury? Not that he could had as he was in a coma for 3 days.

What gives you to right to know every personal details of the player's lives? Did Balme suppose secrecy affect your life in any way? Dan has endured a lot in the last 18 months and if he wanted less media exposure on a recurring injury all the power to him , far as I'm aware it's still a free country and the public doesn't own him.

Again I view your opinion as disturbing.

Never said he did please don't put words into my mouth.

Couldn't give a shit about anything UN footy related.
Again I view your opinion as disturbing.
That's better than Morbid, Sickening and disturbing but then again this shouldn't be about me this should be about the player.
Just follow others disagree and argue your reasons.

So basically Dan has no right to keep things private and should tell the public straight away when he has an injury.

Can't see or agree to that line of thinking YPO, everyone entitled to privacy and again I ask you did not knowing about the reco affect your life in anyway?

Just because he is a football player doesn't mean YOU need to know every single footy related incidents that occurs with him if HE is not comfortable with.

Again disturbing, morbid and disgraceful views you have

Getting boring for every one now, time to move on ,we shall agree to disagree on this one.It look as though I have many faults but bearing grudges is not one, have a nice day.

If a player's injuries, medical treatment or personal issues are likely to significantly affect his performance, then club members, supporters and football followers generally have a legitimate right to know about them.

If they don't meet that criteria, then they are nobody's business but his.

That's the difference between public interest and public curiosity (ie, being a bloody sticky beak).

In Dan's case the injury and treatment clearly meet the criteria, so we are entitled to know about them.

However, now that we have fuller details, we still know, essentially, what we knew after scantier details were released earlier, namely he is touch and go for VFL Rd 1, and he is always likely to have recurrent knee problems.

So delaying release of fuller information in order to give him a chance to deal with it in private has not in any practical way infringed upon our right to know about the treatment.

You ALL seem to have missed the point that Balme DID disclose this information on SEN in his normal slot, for all to hear. Many did not hear it, but some did, and it was posted here on BF over 2 weeks ago. There was no coverup. The fact that it was only released to the Sun, or whoever this week as an exclusive, is firstly misleading, and secondly, entirely Daniel's right and choice to do so.

It's just a bit strange that some of us have been discussing his LARS augmentation on BF openly for 2 weeks or so, and now everybody is overreacting. Nothing has changed since Balmey disclosed this, other than it's all over the print media, and confusion reigns supreme here on BF.

Veedubs, I didn't miss the point, and I don't know whether anyone else did, either.
The op happened in December but, in order to give the kid time to deal with it, the info wasn't released until mid-January, and then in a sketchier form than now.
The issue has not been the op, but the decision to delay the release of full info.

YPO is, of course, entitled to his viewpoint. However, he doesn’t seem to have much idea of how a sporting club functions and what its principle responsibilities are. Nor does he appear to have much insight into the primacy of players’ rights to privacy either. Therefore he’s likely to continue to dig himself into a hole.

The key thing is for the club to fully support Menz physically and psychologically. What information it releases to supporters is subservient to that.

As for Balmy, he gets a lot of unfair criticism here. He’s been one of our best pick-ups. Not only does he have a terrific footy brain he also brings a successful business background to the table having been a rated company CEO during his time in Adelaide. He’s been headhunted twice to my knowledge since he’s been with us. We are fortunate to have him.

The full info relates to it being in the newspapers as an exclusive. That is cynically disturbing. Not a lot more has been released other than DM saying he needed time to come to terms with it which is 100% justifiable. I wasn't referring to your post either.
I think if YPO had read the post 2-3 weeks ago, he would NOT have posted yesterday what he did, and none of us would be discussing this. THAT is my point. The information was there, it was (rightly not highlighted), accessible to us all. Some read it with scant acceptance of what it meant, others discussed it, others missed it altogether.

Whatever they have been doing for Menzel's recovery I want them to throw it away and get him on the Adrian Peterson treatment (Minnesota Vikings NFL). A year after doing an ACL, MCL and damaging cartilage I think he was second all time in running yards. Check out some highlights on youtube. The speed, power and agility are amazing - a year after such a terrible injury. I have my doubts whether the way we do injury recovery here in Aus is up to the standards they achieve in the USA (+ strength and conditioning in general). At the moment I feel saddened that I will not see this guy play at his best. Very sorry for him too.
