Maybe not, but he's proven to me that without him we have no forwardline at all so his impact on games is why I believe he derserves a two year deal.
Yes his form has been good so far, but he needs to sustain it to have leavage at contract time.

That’s the reality of the business

That's your opinion, my opinion is that I think it's insulting.
I can't see Menzel being insulted by Geelong. He was kept on the list and paid good money for years on end whilst contributing nothing to the success of the club, because the club understood his potential output in the future and didn't want to be without him.

He might not be insulted, but I am for him.

Well he's contributed over the last two seasons and even more so in the first month of footy; I'll say it again, where would our forwardline be without him?

My view is he's earn't a two year contract because of his impact on games and how valuable he is to the team and that view's not going to change.

It's been good for a while, we have no forward structure without him.

If you want to get worked up on behalf of Dan go for it, like I said it’s all business none of it is personal and he would know that.

they will re-negotiation at the end of the current contract and if he has sustained his output all year he has more leavage to increase his value to the club.

If not he either accepts the new terms or seeks a trade.

Pretty simple

Unfortunately, as Scotty said, when you've had four knee recos it's hard to get much more than one year deals. Clearly other clubs around the league think so too otherwise he'd be running around for another club right now. That may change in the off-season if he keeps this form up, though.

Menzel is mature enough to know how the business works, I doubt he would be insulted in the slightest.
Menzel said he was happy with the one year contract + accepted GFC's position.

You're absolutely correct about his performance, and I've always been one of his biggest fans on here. Right now he's the best performer in our forward half of the ground. He's a gun.
However, I think you're slightly confused about the motivations behind contracts. A contract is a representation of a club's expectations for a player. Dan Menzel has spent more time off the field than on it during his time at Geelong. Right now, if you had to put money on who would be most likely to ping an ACL in the future, he would be at the top of the list because of his history. This makes a 2 year contract problematic, because there's a high likelihood that he wont be on the field for the period of the contract, meaning the club loses the player's contributions AND the money it could have used securing the services of someone from another club. The longer the contract, the higher the risk on behalf of the club. This is precisely why players get shorter and shorter contracts as they get older. The logic is straightforward, and as others have pointed out, nobody else in the league was willing to offer him a 2 year contract, despite how incredible his footy is. This should tell you something about the way you see the situation compared to the professionals who operate in footy clubs. I understand your emotional argument, and I share your inclinations. But it's pure, cold logic that governs contract decisions.
Don't get me wrong - I love the guy and I want him to stay at Geelong unhampered by injury for his whole career. He's a gun. But his knees are a liability and you never know what's around the corner with a player with his injury history.

People have short memories, he started last season like this too.

Hopefully he is still doing it in June and then September but it is a wait and see proposition.
Wrong. My memory is perfect (so long as footywire is up lol). Daniel didn't have a tackle round 4 last year. This year he eclipsed that by one!:D

Nah, he looks a different player this season

Not to be a negative Nelly, but he was kind of forced to say that as he had no other option.
No other club offered him a contract and it was either sign the one the club gave him or play at a lower league.

Might not look quite so smart when he kicks 60 goals this year and walks to another club at seasons end.

In fact, it’ll look pretty stupid.

(Not having a crack at your post/take specifically btw nakia)
Menzel won't leave. He'll get a pay increase and I'm sure he understands the situation.

He loves the club.

From when though?
Are you happy to wait til end season 18?
Recalling that there were no higher bidders for his services last year, much to our benefit. Bit like the SJ result for different reasons.

Exactly this, I randomly ran into him once maybe a month prior to his comeback (the proper one) and he almost teared up telling me about how supportive the club has been, that he felt he owed them everything.
That's not a bloke who would walk for 100k.

That's true, but he could have said nothing.

He's his own worst enemy when it comes to these bs "defensive/pressure KPIs".
If a forward is winning 10 contested possessions a game, how on earth is he supposed to rack up "pressure act" stats, I mean it's the defenders racking them up chasing him.
Brilliant! Exactly what I've been trying to get across. Menzel takes strong marks, contested possessions + kicks goals. He is also successful with score involvements. I'm happy with all of that from him.

Can we give Dan an extra $50k/annum to be Tom Hawkins's "Umpire Management Consultant"?

If Hawk got the same treatment from the umps that Dan gets, he would be unstoppable.
Just change numbers....

Tommy Rolls fat in the #10 for a week and give Menz the #26.

Maggots cant get any more confused than they already are so surely they'd just blow the whistle.

GO Catters

Maybe we just need to go back to the names on jumpers when we saw Hawkins become Walker for the afternoon
