DANIEL Menzel says learning from last year has him prepared for another one-year contract if that's how his cards fall.

The mercurial Geelong forward, who sits equal third in the Coleman Medal race after four rounds, is on the same page with the club after Cats coach Chris Scott said he would never be a candidate for a long-term contract.

Id happily pay him 450k a year for one year provided he keeps this level up and still gets manager for 4 games.

Thats about 50 goals this year.

It must also be remember that from 2011 thru 2015 he was compensated to rehab over and over.

It was the right thing to do and IMO have no regrets for it - But Dan has to recognise the business side of that from the club perspective too.

Still, get it done.

My 2 cents, every player is one injury away from retirement. How long did we keep Cowan around for? How long are we keeping Linc? I don’t think a three year deal is to much. He’s 26.

Can we give Dan an extra $50k/annum to be Tom Hawkins's "Umpire Management Consultant"?

If Hawk got the same treatment from the umps that Dan gets, he would be unstoppable.
Actually, he needs to be a bit careful about how much mayo he adds to some of the gentler (even non-existent) nudges, or he'll end up missing out on deserved frees; umps go home and watch the replays as well.

Was it two or three softies he got on Sunday?

geelong addy painting a different picture to afl website, saying it’ll be another nervous wait to see if he signs with us, he will definitely have more options at the end of this year and it will probably stuff us up... hope aaron black can be a top 5 coleman finisher next year,”.

It's exactly the same quotes as in the afl.com.au article that Nakia posted at the top of this page.

Only difference is the order in which they have used the quotes & different spin they have decided to put on them. The only mention of free agency within the article on the Addy website is the opening paragraph that says Menzel is set to keep his free agency options open with no mention of it from Dan himself.

The afl.com.au article:
"Everyone knows that it's a business so you've got to look at all options, but also you've got to look at the best option for you at the club as well," Menzel said.
"Whether that is a year or two years or whatever it is, we certainly took our time and the club said the same thing as well.
"At the end of the day I was very happy with staying at the Cats, it feels like it's starting to pay off now."

Addy article:
“Everyone knows that it’s a business, so you’ve got to look at all options,” Menzel told AFL.com.au.
“But you’ve also got to look at the best option for you at the club as well and it was one that, at the end of the day, I was happy staying at the Cats.
“It feels like it’s starting to pay off now.”

You dont count sunk costs in future contracts. Its irrational.

its goodwill...

and there should be some on both sides.
He after $$ and should be paid accordingly - but there are considerations for him.

Pay him what he's worth but not over a 3 year deal.

Conservatively.

He had (at least) 4 direct shots on goal from frees plus a 50m penalty that turned a 45m shot into a certainty. They were all marginal.
Yep. The 50m penalty was from down the ground though. Nothing to do with him.

I do think opposition panic around him though. They know he’s trouble to deal with.

From when though?
Are you happy to wait til end season 18?
Recalling that there were no higher bidders for his services last year, much to our benefit. Bit like the SJ result for different reasons.
I'd give him a 2 year contract tomorrow because IMO he deserves it.

Let me rephrase;
A 1 year extension tomorrow so that it becomes the equivalent of a 2 year contract.

You're absolutely correct about his performance, and I've always been one of his biggest fans on here. Right now he's the best performer in our forward half of the ground. He's a gun.
However, I think you're slightly confused about the motivations behind contracts. A contract is a representation of a club's expectations for a player. Dan Menzel has spent more time off the field than on it during his time at Geelong. Right now, if you had to put money on who would be most likely to ping an ACL in the future, he would be at the top of the list because of his history. This makes a 2 year contract problematic, because there's a high likelihood that he wont be on the field for the period of the contract, meaning the club loses the player's contributions AND the money it could have used securing the services of someone from another club. The longer the contract, the higher the risk on behalf of the club. This is precisely why players get shorter and shorter contracts as they get older. The logic is straightforward, and as others have pointed out, nobody else in the league was willing to offer him a 2 year contract, despite how incredible his footy is. This should tell you something about the way you see the situation compared to the professionals who operate in footy clubs. I understand your emotional argument, and I share your inclinations. But it's pure, cold logic that governs contract decisions.
Don't get me wrong - I love the guy and I want him to stay at Geelong unhampered by injury for his whole career. He's a gun. But his knees are a liability and you never know what's around the corner with a player with his injury history.
I don't think a two year deal on whatever he's on now is unreasonable based on his output, regardless of the risks.... But that's just me.

Why not a 2-year deal which includes a couple of clauses:
- a trigger clause for a second year based on games played
- a renegotiation clause to a higher salary for the second year based on output during the first year

So say $350k for 2 years where he could earn more in the second year but not earn less than he does the first year, provided he reaches the games trigger - the last 2 years he has played 18 & 19 games, so it could be as simple as 18 games which shouldn't be out of the question (injury dependant)

So how do you justify scott selwood getting a 4 year deal with his body shot? Not 3 but 4. And on good coin two. Menzel gets 200 for 1 year after playing far far more football the selwood had in the previous 2 years when we signed him and on half the annual pay? Or how about an injured 33 year old wells getting 500 a year on a multi year contract. Or ghs getting a 3 year deal after playing vfl for most of the season with a big risk he would never make it. There was a far bigger risk of getting no return on any of these 3 then menzel who hasnt done a knee in 4 years.

So how do you justify scott selwood getting a 4 year deal with his body shot? Condition of us not trading to get him, and his body was not shot. over drama queen here. Not 3 but 4. And on good coin two. Menzel gets 200 for 1 year after playing far far more football the selwood had in the previous 2 years when we signed him and on half the annual pay? Menzel will earn more than 200k this year, its not a flat salary Or how about an injured 33 year old wells getting 500 a year on a multi year contract. again, we walked at this deal for a reason. Or ghs getting a 3 year deal after playing vfl for most of the season with a big risk he would never make it. not on huge coin. There was a far bigger risk of getting no return on any of these 3 then menzel who hasnt done a knee in 4 years.
apples oranges and pears

Why should we even be discussing his next contract at rd 5 of this season?
It's up to him and the club, and it seems people are jumping at shadows here.
