Toast Daniel Menzel

A good kid on the improve. Don't quite see the Stevie J in him but he is a Boris with a bit more versatility.
Speaking of Enright he was very good yesterday doing all the steady stuff and because he was so safe he failed to get much of a mention.

Menzel and Duncan still favorites to provide the impetus we need to improve.
I like tthis comment. I dont see the stevie j. I see enright. Funny how much a player can change from what they are as kids.

Again and it’s just me but does it matter anymore? I don’t see the point of looking back at it as no doubt none of us would have the facts at hands to why this occurred.

The past is the past
So long as the coaching staff has learned and this season they won't try to put square pegs into round holes, there is no reason.

I reckon there's something fishy about Menzel being "dropped" for the QF last year. I heard rumours of drinks with mates (which doesn't sound like Dan what-so-ever) and some knee soreness but neither would explain the half arsed explanation we got.
So I'll pretend it didn't happen, the question from the OP (the latest one) was how is his relationship with the club, I'm lead to believe it's very good. Geelong wanted to keep him and understood why he'd like to see if he could get a better contract elsewhere while at the same time Dan understood the clubs point of view in terms of risk and was more than happy to continue as a Cat, there was a rumour going around that he will be offered a larger and slightly longer term deal depending on how his body holds up during the entire season as it's been a massive issue for him the last 2 years.
He's a star, no doubt about that, and all the talk is he's finally pain free in the knees for the first time in 3 years so fingers crossed we get to see the Star Menzel for 25 games and not 10. He's easily our best forward.

“It certainly is alarming, at the moment, the amount of inside 50s we’re having, and we’re certainly going to have to have more going forward, because we won’t win enough games otherwise,” Menzel said.

“But, certainly, if we can get the ball in their more, then it will certainly help ‘Hawky’ (Tom Hawkins) up there, too. It would be good to look after him.”

Couple of very justified swipes at our transition strategy. Need to return to the old geelong and move the ball back through the middle with quick handball and run and carry rather then kick it to the wings and chip it around.

We got back into the game moving the ball quickly. Hawthorn gained control when we stuffed around with overuse. It's a concerning trend that I bring up every week.

yep it was what got us back into it. why we didnt take risks in the first half to move the ball forward is beyond me. The only teams that succeed with scoring from chip kicking slow movement strategies are teams that are elite passes of the ball and can hit players with precision consistently. We are not that. We certainly need to add that part to our game for variation but our main go for scoring has to be fast ball movement through fast hand ball and risky kicking through the centre square. we gave hawkins no chance yesterday. good to see menzel defend him.

We give him no chance most weeks.

I bought it up in the JLT when he kicked 6 jus to how dangerous he is when we're more direct.

My gut feel is that we are trying to cover for our experienced defenders out and posses the ball creeping it up the ground out of the danger zone.
But we don't have good enough ball users under pressure to do it, and the quick ball movement plays to our strengths more as we saw late on Monday

Then that's poor coaching. Reactive coaching rather than playing to your strengths.

But, it's been a common theme inexperience or not.

It's conservative coaching, trying to hide /cover issues rather than exploit strengths.
And dare I say, it's not the Geelong way

We've never had issues in the back half and it isn't a new problem ... that's my point.

It’s tempo footy, you can’t go flat out the whole game moving the ball quickly, not with the way the game is today. Problem for us is when we have our lull patches in games where we slow it down we just always stuff it up and hawthorn nearly every time forced us to turn it over when doing this, our skill level isn’t good enough as opposed to hawthorn who when they slow it down can chip their way through a zone with elite kicking.

Every pyschologist will tell you the way to win at life is to focus on using your strengths and not focus on improving or mitigating your weaknesses. The same it is at football.
You always play to your strengths. It's when we play our best football.

Going defensive in 1993 for two thirds of a season cost us a final spot and very likely a flag. We have talent this year to win it with the addition of ablett and kelly to the centre. Our 5 best mids are quite possibly the strongest midfield ive ever seen assembled.

I fear a repeat of 1993 due to poor coaching
And not utilising our strengths. Our strength against hawthorn has always been ruck domination and instead we focus on trying to counter mccevoys running game rather then exploit the fact smith is a better ruckman. And we refused to take the game on offensively until it was far too late. We need to fix this urgently given our tough draw in the first half of the season and our injuries. If we dont we may find ourselves dominating the comp come seasons end but sitting around 6-10th.

Good points.
6th would give us every chance to go all the way IF in fact we are dominating, and not stuffed. Big IF.

Maybe it has some legs then and would stand to reason the Cats saying he was omitted instead of throwing him under a bus (particularly know he was likely to check his value on the open market).

Menz is always out with his mates, he's a great bloke but far from an angel.

Well Malthouse philosphy when they were winning and playing off for flags - with players who liked to go out and that ( as long as they wernt knocking out bouncers ) - was if they played well for the Pies then who cares

And Menzel is in All Australian form at present - so alls good on all fronts

I completely agree - but for the fact that I think we couldn't get our better kickers free in the back half in order to take that risk.

Zuthrie, O'Connor and Kolo aren't composed with ball in hand yet - we struggled to get it to Tuohy and Guthrie, who were the ones we really needed kicking out beyond fifty. It did get better later though.

Of course final8 changes it a bit but I was thinking similar today .. and thinking 97 rather than 93. North ended up 7th and Carey creamed us . If we do land at 7th , playing good goal kicking footy.. we may actually better than we have the last couple of years when we finished 2nd.
