Absolutely love menz and how he gos about it and was fantastic on the weekend

I still can’t get over the fact that there was talk of him not getting a contract at the end of last year

My gut feel is that we are trying to cover for our experienced defenders out and posses the ball creeping it up the ground out of the danger zone.
But we don't have good enough ball users under pressure to do it, and the quick ball movement plays to our strengths more as we saw late on Monday
You’d also have to say it’s not working given how many i50s we are conceding. Might as well be attacking.

He was offered a contract earlier in the year ( a 2 year offer) which he declined. No issues there he wanted more.

Come the end of the year the cub offered a one year deal. He choose again to seek the market feeling.

no one was interested in either him or what he was asking for so he took the GFC one year deal.

Given this is his first year with a full preseason and its now 4 years since the last event, and he's only 26, there is a good chance we are seeing about 90% of his potential.

Good on him for making it and I have no doubt that the offers will come, including from us.

There was always a contract on the table for him, it just wasn't one he was happy with when all was said and done. Looked at FA and there was nothing better so he signed back on.

He was never going to be delisted.

But he was not asking for absurd amounts of money. Sources close to the opportunistic forward suggested his price was around $250,000 per season over three years, which is still well below the league average.

When Geelong wouldn’t come to the party on a three-year contract, he was prepared to settle for two seasons on the aforementioned price.

Ultimately, not even two years was on the table and he had no choice but accept a borderline base-level wage to keep his AFL career going.

Cookie said we had $82.00 left in the TPP basket this year.

I dare say that with the rookies we have playing already and some mid tiers not doing as well and some coming OOC, there will be a readjustment of things.

Menzel will earn a better deal. He'll get his and rightly so. Kicked 40 last year and on current pace, even allowing for 3 games missed for management, could get to 60 easily.

67 won the Coleman a few years ago.

Ive said it before and will again.
Pay that man and pay him now.

Great start by Dan, particularly after the club’s “hard ball” contract approach, but we have to anticipate that Menzel will be injured or at least need to be managed for part of the season. Hopefully Crameri can come good and cover.

While I agree at times Menzel will probably still be managed because of his knees, he’s also had his first full pre-season as well so that will help him so much with his fitness lasting over the whole season.

I’m more excited for when we play Hawkins, Crameri & Menzel together.

As you say .if he keeps going he will get more than 250 a year. Which for me sounds a fortune but for a player of his ability is unders. But one should also consider a bit credit in the bank... it took a long time of no play , and payment for which Dan still was supported.
At years end if he kicks 4 goals a game.. he will be a super hot property. So offering him a bit more (if they can is not such a bad idea) but it will still leave him out of contract as a UFA.

I think we need to cool our expectations a bit. Yes he's a super talented attacker. But he was doing the same stuff last year at this stage and really struggled in the 2nd half of the season. On current output he's well worth a 3 year deal on significantly increased money. But I'd prefer to wait to see how he gets on through the season and end up paying a bit more than offer a big contract now only to find he still can't run out a season.

um on current output this year he is tracking at a 90 goal season which would put him in a million dollar a season 5 plus year deal range.

Agree.

Yeah but his point that lets wait and see because Menzel struggles to run out full seasons is very valid.

In some respect I think CS should cool his expectations. Menz could easily have 10 rather than 8.. Im mean he missed 2 shots that id put money on that he would get 7 out 10 times. Right now his goal kicking nous is close to the only thing thats making us competitive with the current ramshackle forward entries numbers we are developing. Its a funny thing , there is no tackle column on the score board ... some stats do mean more than others.

He will not kick 90 ... but what would be great is if he has a memorable finals series (if we get there) so somehow he has to stay fit enough and fresh enough and in form enough . Menzel is good enough to have a 3 or 4 goal quarter and win us a final. Lets hope he can keep on keeping on.

do that ..and he will be on good coin next year..where ever he plays.

My estimate of 60 allowed for a drop in average and missed games for management (3).

That still IMO is worth a 2 year deal and a decent raise from 200k per year.

if he kicks 60 from 22 games let alone less then 20 he is in the all australian team. its worth more then a 2 year deal and more then 600 thousand a year. Motlop who had a shocker of a year and has never made the all australian squad is on more then 600 thousand.

It really wasn't the case, so why do people keep bringing it up. He was offered a contract but chose to explore his options.

Wasnt he after length of contract ?
3 years from memory.
No one wanted to give him that because of his knees

Agreed, was always getting a contract, maybe just not as long as he wanted.

The question for me is this, he would have easily signed a 2 year deal for $200k-250k last year, which is peanuts really for a guy who averaged 2 goals a game last year.
If he kicks 50 goals this year, which is definitely plausible, then he will rightly be asking for a 2-3 year $350-400k deal at a minimum. So it might end up costing us quite a bit more in the long run to not just sign him to a longer, but cheaper, deal last year.

Why are you here?

cos he was offered a very poor contract. 40 plus goal forwards dont grow on trees.
I'm not concerned with the contract length, I was responding to the fallacy that he wasn't offered one and was shopped around.

That’s my least favourite quote, club always looking to pay as much as possible allowing them to frontload allowing us greater flexibility in future years or to allow for upgraded contracts for rookies.
