Toast Daniel Menzel

Me, about June last year:
Don't be too sure he can't get back to somewhere near his best.

It might take him 2 to 3 seasons instead of 1 additional season for those who have only one acl. Look at Thurlow. Everyone was superduper surprised that he hasn't come back a star after 12 months off thanks to an acl. I'm not. Average form the first season after being cleared to play is cliche for an acl. Maybe Menzel needs 2 full seasons before he is back into it. Which means next season he will have a big improvement.

And he did! :D

I was outraged with Scott said he'd only be offered a year, someone like Port could comfortably sign him for 3 years and it'd bring them closer to a flag.
He also said it could be a very large 1 year deal.

Good article and pretty piss poor stuff from the cats in my opinion. Hopefully his efforts are rewarded more generously in the future, a terrific player who has wrecked his body for our club.
its beyond piss poor. Its humiliating. And to announce it publically too.

Well put but I would feel a lot better if a 2 year deal was on the table for 300k p.a. or so.

Give the kid some security and reward production. In all honesty $300k is unders for what he provides to our forward set up but given his injury past that's probably what Dan will face for the rest of his career. Financial security for Dan and it should fit into our pay structure.

Menz deserves it.
Motlop is earning over 600 and on a 4 year contract. Hell yeah 300 is unders.

Winning finals off his own boot at 20. Looked better than anyone I have seen at that age in my time bar Selwood or Omeara

Mate he is one injury off retirement if he does a knee at r8 and retires under your scenario we are stuck paying him for 3 years. Which is why his contracts will rightly always be done later in the year to protect the club.
And players like ghs may never make it at all and he gets 3 years. Menzel was a far safer bet then heaps of players we have given multi year contracts too. Our risk evaluation analysis is non sensical.

He also said it could be a very large 1 year deal.
He's delusional if he thinks nobody would offer more than a year.
1 year is just stupid when you consider we offered ghs 3 years. Keeps this form up and a number of clubs will offer 3 year deals.
Exactly. Any club in flag contention could use a 40 goal a year forward, and would happily gamble on him reinjuring himself.

People have short memories, he started last season like this too.

Hopefully he is still doing it in June and then September but it is a wait and see proposition.
And he kicked 40 goals last year and was fit during the finals. Not his fault we stupidly didnt play him in the first one.

Looks like it's time to give Dan a rest again. His defensive / pressure KPIs are now lower than last year.
He's his own worst enemy when it comes to these bs "defensive/pressure KPIs".
If a forward is winning 10 contested possessions a game, how on earth is he supposed to rack up "pressure act" stats, I mean it's the defenders racking them up chasing him.

Great, let’s take the opportunity to completely F#@k him over with the lowest possible offer then. Hooray!

(That was sarcasm btw, but it seems to be pretty much what the club did)

No they didn’t. They offered a 2 year deal early last year that Menzel and Rama knocked back (or decided to wait), at the end of the year they offered a 1 year deal.
He sighed that deal.
Also the rumour it’s a bare salary deal is wrong, his BASE salary is low but if he makes KPIs he’ll earn decent coin (and a better deal).

There must be some way to offer him a frontloaded deal where the back end years act as security etc. in case of further injury, on the understanding that after every good season the deal will be rejigged to start again - so you offer him a series of 1 year deals on better coin, backended by reassurance of security if things go **** up albeit on a lower wage.

It's probably not something that works for either party tbh, just a passing idea.

Id happily pay him 450k a year for one year provided he keeps this level up and still gets manager for 4 games.

Thats about 50 goals this year.

It must also be remember that from 2011 thru 2015 he was compensated to rehab over and over.

It was the right thing to do and IMO have no regrets for it - But Dan has to recognise the business side of that from the club perspective too.

Still, get it done.

Go Catters

And he kicked 40 goals last year and was fit during the finals. Not his fault we stupidly didnt play him in the first one.

Depending on who you ask, his actions may have contributed to him not playing the first final.

And yes he kicked 40 goals last year - 15 in his first 5 games, 25 in his next 13. His ability isn't in question, how he goes at the start of the season isn't in question, but how he is competing coming round 20+ is the unknown, and that is what Geelong & other teams will be looking at if he remains unsigned through to the end of the season.
