Merrett is the man charged with taming the AFL's wild child -- a task he openly admits is the toughest in the competition."He has great endurance, great speed and he is obviously super strong," Merrett said.
"So he has everything and he is just always in the contest; you can never relax.
"That constant physical contest, that threat you may well get hurt -- or maybe that isn't the right word."

I don't think Merrett has ever gotten in Hall's face before. He's played alright on him, but never done anything to stir him up. Would love to see Merrett really take it up to him and let him know he isn't the lead bull around here anymore. The psychological shift would spread through the rest of the players. Easier said than done though, especially if we are getting killed in the middle.

Actually i've notice the complete opposite, Merrett has been one of few people to really stand up to him and his bully tactics. When Hall turns around and gives a shove, Merrett shoves back, and with Hall looking to give it to his opponents lately i think Merrett is going to piss him off.

Merrett has done well on Hall because he gets him offside, not intentionally, but Hall bullies people and intimidates them, and it doesn't work on Merrett and it gets under Hall's skin. Ends up putting him off during the game as Hall's attention ends up on Merrett instead of the ball.

Very well put. Daniel doesn't need to do anything other than play his normal game and that will be enough for Hall to go bonkers- he seems right on the edge based on his last game.

Plus the more the media talks him up as the missing piece of the Bulldogs puzzle (Browny mentioned that himself yesterday), the more the pressure starts to accumulate.

Tick...tick...tick...

The Merrett v Hall side battle will be one to watch.

Jason Davenport (Port Adelaide) article

“I found it quite astonishing that (Brisbane Lions full-back) Daniel Merrett had the nerve to tell me about my ‘stupid fringe’ when he’s standing in front of me just glowing with orange hair. I wasn’t quite sure how to take it, but it’s all in good fun.”

Another note from last weeks game.. Merrett actually started on Ebert and Drummo was on Shultz.. His versatility is constantly improving and he is not just pigeonholed to big gorilla forwards anymore.. His handballing whilst being tackled is also another hallmark of his game.

Martin Pike

"I'd just play him on his merits, obviously it will be Merrett, he is big enough and strong enough to go one-on-one with Hall."
"It is a perfect match-up, Merrett is a big boy, he has put on a couple of kilograms since I played there, he is an excellent fullback and he plays really well on the pure full forwards. But it is about supply. If the midfield lets the Bulldogs run riot Merrett will struggle - any defender would."

Garry Lyon

Merrett appeared a lost, wayward soul, wondering around the forward line in the initial stages of his career. His shift to full-back coincided with the emergence of a fierce competitor, physically, and now mentally, capable of matching it with the best power forwards in the game. What a revelation for Michael Voss, and Leigh Matthews before him.

Merrett out of Lions-Swans clash
Posted April 27, 2010 16:19:00

The Brisbane Lions have confirmed key defender Daniel Merrett will miss Saturday night's AFL clash with the Swans in Sydney. Merrett tore his hamstring in last weekend's loss to Melbourne and could be out for up to three weeks.

Voss said on Friday that Merrett would be out for another "couple of weeks" after re-aggravating his hamstring at training just days ahead of an expected AFL return.

A couple of weeks? Hmm, I guess that means there's a tiny chance we could get him back for the Pies. Won't get my hopes up high, however.

"He did his hamstring again. He wasn't joining in any of the (football) exercises, he was doing his run-throughs and he pulled up lame - which probably has more to do with his back," Voss said.
"There doesn't appear to be any muscular methods, although he has given it another slight tear, but ... all the clinical signs they're telling me say it's got more to do with the back."
"That probably means another couple of weeks on the sidelines for Rog."

Daniel Merrett convinced Israel Folau to make leap to AFL

A MEETING with Brisbane Lions veteran Daniel Merrett proved the clincher in Israel Folau switching codes.

Greater Western Sydney football chief Graeme Allan arranged the meeting between Israel Folau and Lions fullback Merrett two weeks ago in Brisbane.

Allan contacted Merrett knowing the defender had made a successful switch from rugby league to AFL as an 18-year-old eight years ago.

"I got the phone call and didn't even hesitate because I reckon Israel has what it takes to be successful in the AFL and would love the opportunity and challenge," Merrett said.

Lions fullback Daniel Merrett said he was targeting a welcome return from a hamstring injury on Sunday week against the Western Bulldogs.

Daniel Merrett is perhaps the most credible of all those who have commented on the "will they/won't they" topic.

The Brisbane Lions full-back, who switched from rugby league to AFL at 18, said in the Herald Sun yesterday: "I reckon Israel has what it takes to be successful in the AFL, and would love the opportunity and the challenge."

GWS football operations manager Graham Allan, formerly of Brisbane, said last night: "There's no reason why Israel won't be every bit as good as Daniel.

Daniel Merrett is poised to return from a troublesome ankle complaint.

"Potentially so. He has been up and going for the last week and made some good progression - two weeks of full training gives him a very good chance," Voss said.
