Unfortunately, Merrett won't make the cut at the end of the season thanks to a 10-week back injury. Before going down with the injury in round 11, he led the competition in spoils and he still leads the stats for one-percenters, 29 ahead of the next best defender.

Michael Voss

While Daniel Merrett (back) was expected to return, Voss has basically ruled out the fullback for the remainder of the season.
"He's more unlikely to play and our thought is he won't play for the rest of the season but that is not categoric," Voss said.
"We are being told to take it easy with it.
"A stress related injury in the back is not something you can rush."

"Recovery's going well. I'm pain free which is great and I'll just slowly progress over the next few weeks and hopefully pick up some running in the next four weeks. Then I can join into training and hopefully get back playing."

The last line of defence is becoming a serious issue for the Lions in the absence of regular full back Daniel Merrett.

Merrett admitted yesterday the AFL had interviewed him over the betting plunge on him before the Round 7 game. "They pretty much said there's no issue there, which I knew in the first place," Merrett told 3AW.

Brett Burton injury update

Dan had a scan on his back which showed some good healing so he’s back running again and we’ll slowly build him up and progress his running in a fairly controlled manner.

As per my comments about Dan Rich a moment ago, call time on 2012 and get him cherry ripe for 2012...after all these 'cherry ripe's', one would just about hit the spot.:D

I have a bad feeling about the Merrett injury..

I dont. Nothing to gain from playing him this season. Put him on the LTI list and give another rookie a crack.

With only weeks until the man considered big, bad and bustling retires, thoughts now turn to who could next make football so colourful and controversial.

3. Potential to 'go'

BRISBANE Lions full-back Daniel Merrett gets a nomination based purely on potential. Like Hall, he plays with unmistakable aggression and out of all the players in the AFL, Merrett is closest to Hall in terms of sheer body size. Hall is listed at 194 centimetres and 104 kilograms. Merrett stands at 196 centimetres and goes 104 kilograms. So far, Merrett has kept his aggression caged within, but on-field biff is in his blood. He has shown he knows how to use his powerful hands better than most. The 26-year-old ranks No. 1 in the AFL for spoils this year. Not only does he spoil, he puts ''hurt'' on the ball with his leather-slapping punches. This got us thinking that should Merrett ever happened to confuse the Sherrin with an opponent's noggin, the consequences could be Hall-esque, and incredibly controversial.

I remember in the early days of his career the channel nine commentators (Dermie & Co) were talking about Merrett and somebody asked if he was related to Roger....as soon as this was said Sauce put his fist in the back of an oppositions head and they all started laughing and said bloody oath he is related.

Not really an aggressive footballer at all IMO.

Not normally, though I recall him running straight through someone earlier this year, could've almost got done for charging... can't remember who though! Perhaps Saint Kilda or Richmond.. pretty sure it was at the Gabba, on the boundary line.

Was he trying to get out of bounds with the ball? ;)

He’s also going well. He’s really on the same progression as Browny. He can now join in the modified drills, just with no contact. We expect that by the end of the season he’ll be fully recovered and ready to start his pre-season.

“The Club will get Daniel Merrett and Jonathan Brown back next year as well which will make a huge difference. One kicks four goals per game and the other stops four goals per game, which contributes an extra eight goals to the team.”
