Retired Daniel Merrett (2002-2016)

At the same time, there is no point in having the worlds best defence if you can't move the ball forward with the forwards stock. I'd rather give a little bit away and move Merrett up forward to create a contest so we actually have a chance of winning the game, rather than watching the ball stay in our back half for most of the game and watch Merrett spoil or night.

Round 6 vs Essendon

Essendon's chief destroyer in the first quarter was Crameri who bamboozled Lions vice-captain Daniel Merrett with his mobility.

But Crameri was in the wars from then on as he was slammed into the ground on two occasions through tackles by Lions defender Daniel Merrett, with both incidents possible attracting the attention of the match review panel come Monday.

But it was an innocuous clash between Merrett and Crameri early in the last quarter that will have Bombers' fans sweating as the Essendon key forward went down in a tangle of legs with his opponent before immediately clutching at his knee and being helped from the field.

Experienced Lion Daniel Merrett, who initially lined on Stewart Crameri, admitted the Essendon forward's four first-quarter goals unsettled him early in his return to defence.

"Intensity [wise], I was probably found a bit wanting early," Merrett said.

"As the game went on, I felt like I got my composure back a little bit but early I was definitely struggling.

"We were under the pump early, personally I was under the pump early, and when you get off to a bad start and you're five goals down early, it is hard to compose yourself and come back."

Round 7 vs Collingwood preview

Before injuring his back last year, Daniel Merrett was the equal of any full-back in the competition. He started 2012 as a pinch-hitting forward and ruckman and struggled in the opening quarter against when pushed back against Stewart Crameri last week. The Lions are at their best when their No. 1 defender is in form, and Merrett will need to be in peak condition to curtail Travis Cloke and Chris Dawes.

I'll admit, when he is interested, he can be very good, which I agree he was early last year, however quotes such as: "Intensity [wise], I was probably found a bit wanting early" is unacceptable in my opinion.

The topic came up on one of the footy shows in the past couple of weeks and it was agreed that there is never an excuse that a player should not cross the white line without intensity. If that is the way he, or any player feels prior to a game, inform the coach and let someone else play who is interested. Same goes for Banfield.

Seems he is more interested in growing a stupid looking beard than playing footy at the moment.:thumbsd:

Probably with players who haven't been brought up on the game, you need to be careful moving them to different positions. He was OK this week after a shocker last week, but he looks a long way from being a good player. You can't drop him, he struggles as a forward and he was worse down back. It's become a bit of a mess.

It might be a good week to send him back against GWS. Should be a bit easier than a dominant Essendon side.

On form you'd drop him. But I can't see Voss doing that, and I can't see him regaining touch anytime soon, so it looms as something that is going to be a problem for a while yet.

Round 8 preview

An ongoing question for Voss is where to play Daniel Merrett. With Matt Maguire having a strong season at fullback, Merrett has been preferred forward. Against Collingwood he struggled to get involved, finishing with six disposals, and getting the best out of the rock-solid Merrett is a key to the Lions succeeding.

Round 8 vs GWS

BRISBANE Lion defender-turned-forward Daniel Merrett has kicked a career-best seven goals to spearhead his team back into the winner's circle with a 92-point drubbing of Greater Western Sydney at the Gabba. Merrett kicked five of his goals in a staggering first quarter display - and missed a sixth after the siren - to pave the way for the 19.18 (132) to 5.10 (40) victory.

Merrett was moved from his usual full-back post this season by coach Michael Voss and repaid the faith, racking up 23 disposals and 12 marks in his day out. His first quarter was sublime, snapping his first goal from a pack, then leading onto precise passes from captain Jonathan Brown (twice), Simon Black and Jed Adcock and finishing set shots from all angles.

Sauce unbottled - DANIEL Merrett's struggles as a forward in 2012 were forgotten in an incredible first term that netted five goals (he ended with seven). A vindication of Michael Voss's refusal to send his vice-captain to more familiar territory in defence? Perhaps. The proviso to Merrett's heroics is that they came against an under-strength Giants. Unkind to point out, perhaps, but the Lions will want more goals against better opposition before the tactic can be said to have paid off.

Big ranga Merrett finally answered the critics calling for him to return to his regular position at fullback by kicking five goals in the opening term - and seven for the match. Merrett's previous best was three goals in 2005.

Daniel Merrett booted five goals in an explosive first-quarter performance as Brisbane cruised to a 92-point win over Greater Western Sydney at the Gabba on Sunday. Jonathan Brown was back to his best with five goals while Merrett ended up with seven of his own - outscoring the Giants singlehandedly.

NOT since the days of Daniel Bradshaw and Jonathan Brown have the Brisbane Lions had two such potent forwards on one afternoon.

Merrett had 23 disposals, 12 marks and seven goals. Brown had 23 disposals, 16 marks and five goals.

Not only did they kick a bagful each, but the pair often looked for each other deep in the Lions' forward 50 to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Twice in the first quarter Brown spotted the red-hot Merrett with precision passes that led directly to goals.

Merrett could hardly believe his luck, adding to a career tally of just 24 goals in 120 matches with one glorious afternoon in the warm Brisbane sun.

Voss has been widely criticised for playing Merrett up front instead of in the defensive line but the flame-haired forward went a long way to silencing the critics on his home turf, booting seven goals in a best-on-ground performance.

By the first break, the Lions led by 37 points and Merrett had already passed his personal best goal haul of three, set against the Magpies in round 15, 2005.

He was kicking the ball straighter than an arrow and Giants defender Tim Mohr could do nothing to stop him.

Worst. Call. Ever.

Back to stay forward

Voss said although moving the 27-year-old to the forward line was originally a short-term move, he was now re-considering his options.

"We've been tested a bit to try and change it but we've stuck with it because we think it offers something," Voss said.

"It's probably taken a few weeks to adjust but he (Merrett) was on fire in that first quarter and kicked a bag himself, which was good for his form."

Voss said he was not concerned by criticism for taking Merrett away from his favoured position and praised the red-haired powerhouse on his team-first focus.

"His value to our team has always been as a full-back but as a leader to be able to step up and take that role when in reality he has a preference to play somewhere else … but ask him today whether he wants to be a back or forward."

Anyone else think that Merrett's set shot approach was different? Rather than having a deliberate approach with a pronounced kicking action, he seemed to just start running casually and then execute a kick mid-stride. Like Mitch Clark, I think they've tried to increase his forward momentum when he's executing the kick, and keep him completely relaxed, to the point where it almost looks like he's not taking it seriously.

Totally agree Grim, seemed a very laconic action today. The big difference in previous weeks was his marking for mine. Forget about his opponent today, you could count on him to drop a few sitters previously but the turn around in his marking coupled with his precision for goal today made him look a world beater. Maybe the fact it was a Sunny Sunday and not dewy helped?

“Brisbane, whose first quarters haven’t been that good, they really got out of the box and to think Merrett was going to kick six or seven goals, wow, he’s had a big day out, hasn’t he,” he said.
“He did very well in the early part of the game.
“I was going to take Tim Mohr off Merrett, but he wanted to stay on him, so I thought, well that’s pretty good. A young guy who’s played no games before this season and he’s going to play on about a 130-140-game player and he’s just been smacked around the ears and he said I want to beat this. And I like that attitude to be honest.”

Jonathan Brown

"Rodge will get a lot of confidence out of that," Brown said after the victory. "The injury to (ruckman) Matty Leuenberger has brought this on and, with Rodge helping out in the ruck, he's got to play forward. I'm sure he'd love to be back in defence, but he is doing well up there and was rewarded with a bag."

The big old Lions supporter behind near piddled himself laughing every time Saucy kicked one. It was so funny and music to our ears.
Think the TripleM commentators may have had something to do with it too!

Ooh Aah Ash McGrath

Question: Hi Ash, great game against GWS. How about big Rog! Does he have a big head after his bag of seven?

It was a good game. Always good to get a win, but we need to keep that consistency up. Big Rog did play well and kicked his seven - it was nice after a few weeks of getting bagged and copping a bit from the media that he was able to kick a bag. He hasn’t got a big head. Well, he already has a big head, but I doubt it’ll get any bigger.

The most pleasing aspect has to be Daniel Merrett's seven goals. Not only his goals but just his authority that he stamped on the game. When he went into the ruck he had some really good marks around the ground as well. So for him to do that and kick straight, he'll take a lot of confidence out of the game heading into this week.
