Round 9 vs North Melbourne

At the other end, Lions power forwards Jonathan Brown and Daniel Merrett - who combined for 46 disposals, 28 marks and 12.4 against Greater Western Sydney last week - managed just three goals between them as Luke Delaney and Scott Thompson proved their masters for most of the afternoon.

Match Review Panel

Daniel Merrett, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a first offence for being engaged in a melee during the first quarter of the round nine match between the Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne, played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday May 27, 2012.

In summary, he can accept an $1200 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for being engaged in a melee is a $1600 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $1200 sanction.

Merrett's marvellous goal
8:07 AM Tue 29 May, 2012

Daniel Merrett's brilliant third quarter goal against North Melbourne last Sunday has been nominated for the Round 9 Origin Goal of the Year.

Merrett's sensational solo effort saw him intercept a kick from Kangaroos opponent Scott Thompson while standing the mark, before twisting, turning, and cleverly dribbling the ball through for a goal using the outside of his right boot.

The goal also came at a critical moment of the game as the Lions surged to within four goals nearing the three quarter time siren.

Round 10 vs West Coast

The Lions coach saved special mention for ruckman Ben Hudson and versatile Daniel Merrett who spent time forward, back and as a back-up in the ruck.

Despite losing the hit-outs 75-29, the Lions won the clearances 45-44 and Voss said the two big men played a huge role.

"Hudson and Merrett's role today was enormous. They had such a great game. We needed them to and they delivered. If there's two players from me that come out with special mention, it's those two."

We sit near the Trust area at the Gabba - does anyone sit near the reserve umpire?

I ask because during the game today I tuned into the 104.5 call occasionally and caught Belinda Mellen saying Sauce had approached the reserve umpire to complain about being held by his jumper. Apparently he was saying that the defender (don't know who) was getting his hand into the armhole of his jumper and holding him out of contests. Spider merely remarked that he didn't think he'd like to have his hand anywhere near Daniel Merrett's armpit

Just wondered if anyone had picked up on it during the game, and if there is any problem with approaching an umpire in this manner?

Brisbane Vice-Captain Daniel Merrett Could Miss Q Clash for High Hit on Nick Riewoldt
July 16, 2012
Greg Davis

SALT could be rubbed into Brisbane's wounds from the 13-point loss to St Kilda on Saturday night with Lions vice-captain Daniel Merrett set to come under the scrutiny of the AFL's match review panel.

Merrett could miss Saturday's Q Clash against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium after he appeared to make heavy, late and high contact with Saints captain Nick Riewoldt in a marking contest in the first half of the gritty arm-wrestle at the Gabba.
Riewoldt left the field to receive some medical attention but quickly returned and kicked two goals in the final quarter after being well held all game by Lions defender Joel Patfull.
Brisbane general manager of football operations Dean Warren said the club would eagerly await the match review panel's findings today.
"It was a fraction late and the ball dropped a bit earlier than 'Rodge' anticipated so I think it will definitely be looked at," Warren said yesterday.
"We just have to wait and see what they come back with and deal with it from there."

Rich and Merrett Facing Bans
16 Jul, 2012

Merrett, meanwhile, has been charged with a Level Two charging offence for an incident involving St Kilda’s Captain Nick Riewoldt during the first quarter of the same match.

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the St Kilda Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction.

Merrett to Contest
17 Jul, 2012

Brisbane Lions defender-come-forward Daniel Merrett will sit before the AFL Tribunal tonight, after the Club chose to contest a charging offence handed down by the AFL Match Review Panel.

Merrett had originally been offered a two-match sanction for an incident involving St Kilda Captain Nick Riewoldt during last Saturday night’s match at the Gabba.

An early guilty plea would have reduced his sentence to just one match, however the Lions believe there is a sufficient case to defend at the Tribunal.

IMO lucky. As soon as it happened I thought "oh no that's a weeks rest". Swings and roundabouts at the tribunal. We get the benefit of the inconsistency for once. Maybe they were saving their angry pills for Judd?

Well he did officially get a week's rest, he just slid under with a guilty plea.

Ooh Aah Ash McGrath

Question: Midway through the season Ash. Which of your teammates, at this stage of the season, has the worst hair?

Probably Joel Patfull and Dan Merrett. I’ve noticed watching the games back that their bald spots are getting worse than ever.

... also, anyone notice that Merrett tends to leave a trail of bodies in his wake? Of all the injuries opposition players have had against us this year, it seems that about half of them were from Merrett. Not that he's doing anything illegal, just that he's throwing his body around, and if people are silly enough to get in his way then they suffer the consequences.
