Merrett poised to sign again: Lion for life
February 15, 2013
Greg Davis

BRISBANE vice-captain Daniel Merrett will be a "Lion for life".

The 28-year-old is poised to sign a contract extension with Brisbane that will see the vice-captain finish his career as a one-club player.

The fullback would have been a free agent at the end of this season but he will sign a new deal before this year's competition starts.

"I've got every intention of being a Lion for life. I'm very close to re-signing," Merrett said.

"The club has invested a lot into me and I want to repay that. I'm happy where the club is headed and I want to be a part of it."

Merrett commits to Lions
February 22, 2013
Lions.com.au

Daniel Merrett will all but remain a Brisbane Lions player for life after extending his current contract for a further three years.

The new deal will see Queenslander Merrett, 28, remain at the Lions until at least the end of the 2016 AFL Season.
...

“As a Queensland boy, being able to call myself a Brisbane player for life, it’s pretty amazing,” said Merrett, who has 135 AFL games for the Lions since making his debut in 2005.

“I’m extremely proud of this Club – it’s got a great history and it’s an honour to be a part of it.

...

Lions General Manager – Football Operations, Dean Warren, said: “Daniel’s commitment to, and belief in the clubs direction is unquestionable. He was eligible for free agency this year but wanted to complete contract negotiations prior to the start of the season to ensure that it didn’t become a distraction which speaks volumes for his character.

Interesting that he is effectively on a 4 year deal and will be about to turn 32 at the end of it. Kind of goes against other negotiations for older players.

Wonder if any other clubs were interested.

Combined with this comment:

I'd suggest there might have been mild speculation and the Lions were keen to tie him up and remove all doubt. Not suggesting at all that he'd do a runner, just that we were playing it smart - I'd assume the contract is fairly front loaded.
Great to have Rog around for the rest of his career, geez he's a good player. I wouldn't have blamed any other clubs for going after somebody as useful as him so I'm very happy I never have to worry :D
Can't wait to see what he does this year.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines, but effectively he will be 31 during the playing season of 2016 (turning 32 in Dec 2016). I guess that makes that year similar to a "1-year contract over-30" situation.

In any case, good news and I hope the big fella's body and speed hold up to see out this contract. They could always park him back as a deep full-forward I suppose.

On reflection, this has been a massive commitment to the Lions by Dan Merrett. I can't think of a single AFL club where he wouldn't get a game, and on the free-agent market he certainly wouldn't be short of suitors.

He's come a long way from his early days. Now, he's a big, fast man who has worked his way to being one of the more reliable kicks in the team from someone who initially used to look to handball off to a support player. He can play back, forward and pinch-hit in the ruck.

He provides a presence that gives confidence to other players around him.

His last few contract re-signings have all had the same pattern.

Sign early with no fuss, without dragging the negotiation through the media or whoring yourself out on the open market to milk every extra dollar possible. Then issue a statement saying how fortunate you are to play for the club.

He really is class. Pure, pure class.

I'd only be guessing but would not be surprised to hear that Daniel might agree to a 4 year $value which might equate to 2 years $value for many others - not saying he is being shafted by the club more that he is comfortable with what the club has done for him from his beginnings as a 'project player'.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Pretty sure it was well understood last time around that he wasn't on big money for a player of his calibre.

He'll naturally transition into a new role as a a TripleJ anchor when the footy career is over anyway. His future is secured. :P

Total agreement. Our new captain and Rocky also fall into this category. Contrast this with Bradshaw, Rischitelli, Brennan and one or two on our current list and the difference in respect is miles apart. That is why I could not understand, nor could agree with Clark's appointment to the leadership group a few years back.
Richy take note and leave your scum manager back in WA.

Disagree with all but Bradshaw and partly Rischitelli.
The Lions managed this duo really poorly, by offering them up for trade for Fevola. I have nothing against them for leaving the Lions, and wish them the best. They have served the Lions well and hopefully they are back to good terms with the Lions and co.

The comment has nothing to do with any of them leaving the Lions.

Rubix WingMan. This isn't the thread to get into it, but I will say this, Braddles regularly held the club to ransom during contract negotiations. The Fev trade was not the sole catalyst.

Rischi was well gone before the Fev trade. I kinda know!

His team first attitude is inspirational.

I think this is why we want to really do well from our academy and use local talent. QLD players that come through our system and land on our list will likely always stay. There are plenty of talented AFL players from QLD, if you can find them.
