In the Brisbane Lions-Gold Coast game, Brisbane full-back Daniel Merrett was a shock starter at full-forward. He was backed in from $101 to $15 to kick the first goal, leading bookmakers to fear information about the switch was leaked.

BRISBANE players were warned two years ago of the pitfalls of leaking information on positional changes after punters won $36,000 betting on defender Daniel Merrett kicking the opening goal in a match against Collingwood.

The Australian does not make any suggestion that the players were in any way involved in the betting plunges.

Merrett, though, is well-aware of the possible implications given Brisbane's chief executive in 2009, Michael Bowers, was forced to defend him in a similar situation.

Round 10 vs Adelaide

Defender Daniel Merrett kept Adelaide danger man Kurt Tippett to eight possession, no marks and no goals while collecting 17 touches and taking 11 marks himself.

Defensive linchpin Daniel Merrett kept Kurt Tippett goal-less in a commanding performance.

That is an absolute domination no matter how you look at it. Especially in such perfect conditions for tall forwards.

Surely polled Brownlow votes today and is really pressing that AA fullback claim.

...while collecting 17 touches and taking 11 marks himself.

I seem to recall reading someone recently bagging Sauce as a one trick pony...

Tippett was a broken man by the end, with his head down and just about giving up. It was an absolute shamozzaling.

Taking his marking to this level has really added another string to his bow. Hard not to be impressed:thumbsu:

Umpires still unimpressed (apparently)

Sauce has only got to even look at the boundary line and they'll ping him for "deliberate"

Another outrageous call against him today:thumbsd:

Play the game, Daniel. Again he got pinged for not trying to disguise his intent. If he had handballed into the crowd, looking like he was trying to keep it in, he would have been right. Not just grab the ball & stroll over the line. Give the umpire an out.

Great game, but.:thumbsu:

That deliberate today looked like a legitimate fumble. Umpire might of only seen his back where it would of looked worse than the replay showed.

"It happened to me a couple of years ago against Collingwood, the same sort of thing. It has happened a couple of times, but it has nothing to do with the players," he told Melbourne's SEN Radio.

"You can't really stop it if someone comes and watches training and sees you training up forward and they go and tell a few mates."

The defender has caught the ire of the umpires recently, having been penalised twice this season for a deliberate out of bounds. Merrett gave away a free kick against Adelaide on Sunday after he gathered a loose ball less than one metre from the boundary line and was ruled to have deliberately run it out.

"I thought I was pretty stiff," Merrett said.
"I feel I genuinely am unlucky with those decisions. Obviously the umpires want to keep the play going and that's what my intent is, and occasionally [the ball] just knocks over out of bounds. "

Merrett said he was prepared to accept the umpire's decision and had not sought clarification from the AFL on the rule, denying he was being targeted as a serial offender.

"It probably feels like that but I'm sure that's not the case," he said. "I'll keep playing the way I've been playing and I don't know what I can do about it. I suppose it's up to the umpires to make their judgement."

Interesting is that in Adelaide on MMM's Rush hour show with Mark Ricciuto, they have a guest in each week, and so far this year they have put a curse on each guest with all having absoulte stinkers the following game. Tippett was on the show on Friday...hopefully he gets on before all the lions games in the future. Not that merrett needs the help considering his current form though

It’s been great to see guys like Daniel Merrett, Jed Adcock and Pearce Hanley starting to be recognised by the wider football community for their efforts down back this season.

This might sound biased towards my fellow defenders, but those guys have all been really consistent over the first half of the season and would probably be among the leading contenders for the Club Champion award at this stage.

In my opinion, ‘Rog’ is probably among the best full-backs in the competition at the moment and should be strongly considered for a spot in the All-Australian team if he keeps up this form. The big fella was just awesome last Sunday against the Crows.

Merrett’s the interesting one, because Sydney don’t have a really big forward, so it’ll be interesting to see whether Brisbane can resist the temptation to play Merrett forward as they did against the Suns. I assume Sydney will play a small-ish forward line and try and run him around.

Johnston made his debut last week, the fifth Swan to do so this year, but will avoid a match-up against seasoned Lions defender Daniel Merrett.

''I would have liked to have given him another chance but we looked at Brisbane's team, Merrett is a pretty big, strong quality full-back,'' Swans coach John Longmire said.

^ Gotta be an ego boost to Roge to hear they didn't select someone based on fear of that player being manned up by him! :thumbsu: :D

Not sure I've ever seen a coach admit that fear of who they'd have to play on stop them from playing someone :confused:
