Rich & Black are the only players teams will hard tag, and that is a worry. Rich can have quiet games but it aint due to lack of effort, as he runs himself into the ground...it is the lack of impact other players have after the hit Rich often takes for the team that should be alarming
I think that The Zork will cop some of Rich's hard tags next year.

Others beat me to it, but Picken (the Dogs' tagger, and a pretty good one) started against Zorko and kept on him for at least the first half.

Need more of that...had we still had a month of footy left rich would again be wearing the hard tag...need continued bigger efforts from others and richys quiet games should go in vain.

No 2nd year blues from zorko would be nice as he certainly has some hurt factor

Daniel Rich’s grand finale
Together with Daniel Merrett’s seven goals in Round 8, Daniel Rich produced one of the best individual efforts for the Lions’ season against the Western Bulldogs in the team’s final match for 2012. Rich kicked collected 25 disposals, kicked four goals and sent the ball inside 50 metres 11 times (most of which also resulted in goals).

Thought Rich found a yard of pace or two since he first joined the club, and really saw it during the Bulldogs match a few times. No doubt as a result of his increased fitness. Thought id have a look at his 20m sprint result at draft camp after noticing that Whitfield who's expected to go pick one ran the 20m in 3.15. Yet Rich who has been accused of being slow as a reason he will never be elite midfielder, ran a 2.95. Just goes to show how groupthink can get the best of people, especially after his first season when everyone was scared they had made a massive blunder.
Can't wait to see what he delivers next season.

From early pre-season Daniel Rich stood out as fit and hungry on the training track.

Players and coaching staff alike pointed out the effort that he had been putting in and he seemed to have added the desire to go with his natural talent.

After winning the Rising-Star in his debut year of 2009 the following two seasons he seemed to improve slower than expected by fans and pundits alike. Most would refer to 2010 and 2011 as solid but unspectacular years, a disappointment after the heights of his debut season, and many were left wondering whether he had any more room for improvement to become “elite”.

In February the injury that saw him miss 6 games in 2011 flared up and fears arose that the early progress in pre-season was going to be lost and that we would see a third season in a row where Daniel had not taken the next step.

Before the season started an AFL media article written by Mike Whiting had Daniel expressing his own disappointment with his previous two seasons. It was great to know that the player himself had high expectations for his ability and it seemed like he was prepared to put the work in to overcome the previously unaddressed deficiencies in his game.

To start reaching his potential Daniel needed to become more proactive in getting the ball himself, running for longer both ways and up his second efforts. He had shown the ability to do these things sporadically; he just needed to be more consistent. With Simon Black approaching the end of his career Daniel would have to do all these things while also facing a hard tag more frequently due to the reputation he had developed for damaging ball use.

The fears were put aside by many after an influential performance in the first pre-season game that he was fit for the win against Carlton on the Sunny Coast.

When the game against Melbourne came along in round 1 at the MCG he wasn’t majorly influential with a solid 24 possessions. This was more the case of the rest of the team performing much better than expected and Daniel was a peripheral performer rather than a major influence on the unexpected win.

It was the Thursday night game against Carlton in Round 2, after a five day break and returning from an away game where the first hints of Daniel’s improved fitness came to the fore. The Lions were competitive until half time but got blown away by a Carlton team that had a long break and were being talked about as top- 4 material at the time. 27 disposals a goal and 8 clearances meant that after 2 games he was averaging over 25 possessions a game and his fitness and ability to get to the more contests was paying dividends and able to be seen by all.

Fremantle’s Ryan Crowley tagged Daniel out of the game on his visit home in Round 3 where we witnessed that Daniel was still susceptible to a close checking opponent. As it turned out this was more an indicator of Crowley’s extremely good form then Rich’s weakness as Crowley got the better of most of his opponents throughout the season.

Round 4 Daniel hit back with a vengeance to tear the Suns apart with 22 disposals 3 goals 8 tackles and 9 clearances.

He performed admirably in the next 3 games, all losses. The high point in this period (the longest losing streak of the season) was Daniel’s 30 possessions against Essendon, although his disposal was at times questionable.

He was good in the games against GWS and was influential in almost reeling back a big lead against North before the comeback petered out.

West Coast came next and Daniel was instrumental in an unlikely victory, absolutely dominating the fourth quarter. Coming into the bye it was difficult to be disappointed with the first half of his season; he was accumulating more of the ball, covering more ground and was quite often finishing out games the strongest out of any of our midfield group.

The whole team came out of the mid-season break with a drop in intensity so Daniel was not alone in having one of his season’s worst games against the eventual Grand Finalists, Hawthorne. The cobwebs were blown away in the following week with the team racking up its second win in Melbourne for the year against the Bulldogs while wearing a Fitzroy tribute Guernsey. Daniel was good amongst a host of strong performances that day.

Round 14 saw the Demons come to the Gabba and Daniel made a hard-tag look like a soft tag that day with his ability to run away from his direct opponent. In fact on a few occasions it looked like he was surprised at the time and space he had, unfortunately that was after he had already rushed his disposal.

Although Daniel was one of the better performers in round 15 against the Swans his output was well down compared to the expectations that had been built up by his season to this point. He was not alone on this front with much of the team appearing to switch off after an error in the first quarter from James Polkinghorne that let Sydney take control of the game.

Round 16 against St Kilda at the Gabba was an ok performance in a game that the Lions played well in but still managed to lose. It was known before the game that losing would put any talk of finals to bed and Daniel let his frustration at his opponent’s close checking tactics get the better of him in the first quarter when he pushed Clint Jones into the fence. He subsequently got a two-match suspension (the first of his career) from the match review panel for engaging in rough conduct.

Against Richmond and Carlton Daniel showed consistency, although he was withdrawn with a hamstring complaint as a precaution late in the game against Carlton when he appeared to tweak it on a set shot for goal.

He was back the next week against Adelaide for the second victory of the year against a team sitting in the top four and played his part in beating one of the AFL’s most talented midfield groups. He had a strong fourth quarter against Port the following week to set us up to go into the final home round against the Bulldogs looking like we would finish off the season with three wins in a row.

In a performance that will leave supporters’ mouths watering for the next season, Daniel had a career best game against the Bulldogs. He kicked 4 goals, set up a fair few more with his 25 possessions and precision kicking into the forward line. Commentators referred to one of his worm burner passes as “kick of the year” with it coming straight out of the centre, not going above eight feet and travelling 45m to land straight on Browny’s chest.

Daniel Rich had his best year as a Lion, shown with equal lead in the Brownlow voting and he probably would have finished with a B & F if he wasn’t suspended. He came second; averaging the most votes per game and he also polled in 16/20 games that he played.

Many fans will be waiting with baited breath to see if next year he can raise his efficiency, which was down a bit this year, and keep improving his disposal and goals per game average next year to take the step up into the elite midfielder bracket. He managed to average 3 disposals a game more this year than in his previous seasons, as well as finishing on 20 goals which averaged out to equal a goal a game and come third on the clubs goal kicking list.

The real telling thing to be excited about though is that it doesn’t seem like Daniel is prepared to rest on his laurels with interviews throughout the year expressing that he had a lot more to give and what appears like the work ethic now to make sure that he can hit the highest heights.

If you're lounging around Gold Coast beaches this summer, chances are you'll spot Brisbane Lions' resident surfer dude, midfielder Daniel Rich.

With the golden locks to match his affinity with the water, it's of little surprise. "Nothing beats going for a surf on a nice hot day when there's a few waves around. Generally I like to surf Duranbah and Burleigh,'' he said.

Rich said summer barbecues were also big, while "jumping in the pool out the back'' or enjoying a cold drink was an immediate way of beating the heat.

The 22-year-old said his New Year's resolution was more golf and more surfing.

"The good thing has been that we had no issues over the break," Rich said on Monday.
"It's been a focus here at the Lions that you train hard and prepare well and when you have a break you don't do anything stupid.
"I can't speak for other clubs but we have had a good attitude over the break, and not got into trouble which has obviously been seen at other clubs.
"And that sort of thing is player driven.
"You shouldn't have to rely on the coach being like a school teacher - if it is driven by the senior players the younger guys follow."

Very strong words from Rich, I would be pegging him to take over the captaincy after Brown.
Don't know if he will. I think Rich might end up being one of those players who are a big leader, but not in an official capacity. I can see him being a VC, but i think others are being groomed for the role.

I would be surprised if he wasn't promoted to the leadership group for the upcoming season.

Yeah, watched an interview with him on the FoxSports website yesterday and it hinted that he could be in line for the leadership spot vacated by Drummond.

You would think he is a shoe in. With Black and Brown on the way out in the next few seasons, there will be some big shoes to fill with the leadership group, so i'd expect a few more additions. Rich seems to have really stepped up over the past 12 months in the leadership stakes, leading the way on the training track, setting a good example and getting in front of the media.

i'm actually gob-smacked he hasn't already been in the leadership group, & why it is taking so long.

he oozes leadership. he is the example you would want him to be in all aspects of his footy both on & off the field.

when the lions had there last leadership shakeup, I didn't mind drummond's inclusion, but thought it was a joke when mitch clark was named, he was already being rumoured as being 'out the door'. I believe rich should have got in then.

i watched his highlights package again last night, if he doesn't go down in lions history as one of their best impact players, & he can get better. it is going to be a thrill to witness the journey, & tell my grandkids.
