What's going on with this bloke? I remember some saying that he was such a ready made footballer after his draft year and that there wasn't a whole lot of upside. Are they being proven correct, still too early or just in bad form? He had a great debut season, was inconsistent last year and looks to be pretty ineffectual again this year. Where's he heading?

He has improved a lot since being drafted. He's a much better inside player now to match his outside game and is slowly developing a bigger tank.

In his debut year he didn't get tagged until late in the year when clubs knew how damaging he could be. Last season he was learing how to beat a tag and it's starting to pay off a little. Tagged by Jones and ended up getting a respectable 19 touches. He's averaging 21 touches this season which is not bad considering he's 20 and every team targets him.

I nopticed that tonight as well. I put his continual fumbling down to the conditions but his decisions were noticably off. Still a more than handy inside player but I think the predictions of not much more improvement in him might be right.

Most Demon fans said the same thing about Dusty due to he and Rich having bigger bodies when entering the AFL, and so far Martin looks to have improved on last year.

Wouldn't be so quick to write off Rich yet, a lot of learning to do but will come good in time.

Nothing wrong with him, when Brisbane starts playing better football it will allow him to release and play his own game.

As it is it seems like he's single handedly trying to turn games, it just wont happen that way. He's had a slow start to the year but with some form he will finish strong.

Yeah one so-so game that happens to be on FTA TV and all of the sudden he is stagnating badly. I love experts.

This was my immediate reaction to the op.

If he'd watched our other games this year he wouldnt have started this thread. Richy is doing fine.

His best value is being fed the footy by a good midfield and having a structured & drilled forward line to deliver to. His kicking is just on another level. However he's never going to stand out at anything else - its up to the coach to figure out how to release him.

Rich isn't built for gut running with his stocky frame, yet he looks as slow as Mclean resting in their forwardline and without the ball. Lacks the legspeed and agility to apply defensive pressure as an outside player. Great kick like Nick Stevens minus the hard running and huge motor. Needs to model his game on Murphy's who has a similar build, but beats taggers due to his hard running and agility. One trick pony who isn't a Sam Mitchell or Simon Black by hand, but doesn't have a lot of variation in his kicks.

Where do i start with this post.

Why do you even bother?

Thats exactly how I view him, has got a terrific kick on him but isn't a prolific ball-winner and lacks speed. Doesn't have much scope for improvement but will be servisable every now and again.

:D Pretty funny that this thread was made. Tonight was the first game that he was not only was he kept out of it but he fumbled the ball a bit. He finally has 1 bad game...

I watched the first quarter and then some. He looked very timid, didn't attack the ball anywhere near enough when it was a 50/50. Wasn't very impressed.

I thought he'd be a star after what he did to us in 09, but he has done very little since.

Very happy with Yarran!

I am quite happy with how he has been progressing. From his 4 games this year he's had 82 disposals, 22 clearances, 21 tackles, 19 inside 50s and 2 goals.

He gets extra attention from the opposition because of his massive hurt factor, but he's getting better at coping with that. He looks to be a fair bit fitter this year. Tonight is the only game that you could say was poor, but Clinton Jones is a tough opponent to break free from.

He may have quite a few tackles but tonight I realised he just doesnt chase at all. He gets most of his tackles when he is already inside the packs but I caught him napping quite a few times last night not being prepared to put in a chase and gather his own ball. He also is very slow for a man of such a young age which really makes him almost a one position type player with little versatility.

While it may be true that Rich is stagnating, it could also be said that other highly-rated selections from the 2008 draft such as Michael Hurley and Jack Ziebell haven't greatly improved (as far as statistical impact) on what they showed in his first season either. I've limited the following analysis to the first two rounds of the draft only, as most drafts are a bit hit-and-miss beyond that, and expectations on players selected later in the draft are obviously lower too.

I'd really give this draft class until the end of the 2014 season before you make a final judgement on them, particularly the key position types. By then, each player (should they all remain on AFL lists) will have had six seasons in the system, will have grown beyond being a young, developing player (18-24 years of age) and will be just entering their prime (24-29 years of age) as a player.
