And yet with all those so called defenders you still bled goals. Ok then. You're relying on O'Hailpin? He's like jarrad oakleigh nicholls in that he's lucky to still be on the list. In fact wasn't he shopped around IIRC? And we all know thornton's not the answer down back. Any, hope it all works out for you.

Just a couple of quick points, yes our defence did leak some goals, but that is because we've been playing very young kids on more mature footballers.

It still does not take away from the fact that we have a lot more young depth in our backline than in the forwards. Hence you recruit players to strengthen your weakness, which was forward line depth.

Thornton is not the answer down back playing against the BIG key forwards, but as the third defender he is more than adequate doing that role. We have had to play Thornton in a role which he was not suited to play for many years.

Are you serious?

You reckon we have bigger problems in defence and the middle than the forward line?

I ask you again, are you ****ing serious? :o

Yeah absolutely. With players of the calibre of Fevola, betts, waite, fisher, kruezer, and the midfielders resting down in the fwd line, I feel perhaps the coach has had a bit to do with how the forward line functions. Too Fevola conscious. Perhaps a good crumbing forward will help.

We're bleeding goals?

Over 22 games, we conceeded 66 points more than you. That's an average of 3 points per game.

Don't see you crying for Richmond to draft more defenders??

We have. Rance and Post as KPP down back. Happy? I am. :thumbsu:

Well done, you have a fearsome duo of tall defenders that have played exactly how many games between them?

One thing you should have is a one way ticket to get out of here. Hopefully one of our mods delivers it to you some time soon.

Must admit, I was really hoping that Yarran would end up with the Lions, due to our reliance on Brown & Bradshaw & the lack of a class crumber/3rd forward.

He will no doubt add a bit of "X" factor to your side & take the pressure of Fev.

As someone mentioned earlier, it's probably easier to pick up a top flight midfilelder, but much harder to pick up a naturally talented forward.

Rich appears to be a beauty though but who can tell at this stage ?

Here's hoping they both burn up the track next season. Nothing more exciting having these potential stars coming into your club. I got so sick and tired of my old man telling how he'd seen Robbie Walls first game!

Agreed thylacine60. Whether it's Yarran, Rich, Watts etc you just want to see these kids play well regardless of who they play for.

It was a real highlight to see Rioli turn it on this year for the Hawks.

Ahh Robbie Walls. That's a blast from the past! I can tell you as a Fitzroy supporter in May 1978, I was thrilled that we picked up Robert Walls & Bernie Quinlan within the space of a week. If my memory serves me correct & your dad may know this, I think Walls was in the Carlton reserves for awhile in 78.

Little clubs like Fitzroy just weren't supposed to get those calibre of players

And when you did clubs like us came along and took them like Frank Marcassani.(think i spelt that right)

Your more than welcome back LL, not like you where trolling our board, see you soon.

Thanks 4blues. Mate let me reminisce for a moment about Frank Marchesani.

Yes you grabbed Marchesani in 1981. He won the rookie of the year in 1980. He played 16 games for the Roy Boys that year. He was very pacy, very classy. He should have made more of his talent.

The pivotal game that caught Carlton's eye was Round 22 - 1980 where Marchesani kicked 4 goals against the champion Bruce Doull. That was a remarkable game. Carlton were approx 50 points up at the 12 minute mark of the last quarter & ended up winning by 4 points!

Fitzroy kicked about 7 goals in approx 10 minutes. I think the Blues were assured of their finals spot & they were in cruise control. Actually that result might have cost the Blues top spot that year. I think you had to win by a certain margin to grab the top spot. I stand to be corrected though

Re: the Marchesani deal. Fitzroy desperately wanted Peter McConville, but the Blues would not give him up. Instead we got Peter Francis & he was a very good player for us for a couple of years.

Apart from getting Jezza's number 25, Marchesani didn't do a great deal for the Blues. I think he may have contracted glandular fever which set him back a bit. He moved onto Essendon without success.

Apologies if I've bored anyone, however it just brought back the memories of the good ole days of the early 80's!

I remember that all clearly, Honestly i think Fitzroy got more from francis than we did from Marchesani, and yes it was Glandular fever, really was never the same player after that. As for McConville we ended up shipping him off to St.Kilda.

Peter Mac 33 was a great player for Carlton. Getting back on thread anyone else feel this may go down as another almighty stuff-up by Freo?

Living in W.A and being an East Fremantle supporter, I have a real soft spot for the Dockers.

It is sad to say, I think they may have stuffed up with their first two selections. There is a massive part of me that is hoping it is not correct.

Rich/Yarran + Ash Smith/Trengove + Suban has a nicer ring to it.

I don't think Hill was a horrible selection, they needed that injection of pace, I just didn't see the point in taking a 22 year old 174cm small forward with pick 21 and passing on Trengove. Don't you think they should be looking for KPP just as much as speed? I would have thought that would have been one of the positions they'd look to improve yet they haven't even looked to address their backline at all.

It's more the second pick that baffles me TBH. I don't think they did too badly otherwise, I think there is value in Bucovaz, Walters and Hall.

Nice of you to bring up a game from last year in which he went well. Yes stevens has done very well against us and has been good for carlton over the year. BUT A lot has changed since. His neck appears to be flaring again, he's approaching 29, he has ongoing weight problems and now soft tissue injuries. I would have thought another good midfielder or a key defender would have been a more urgent requirement than a small forward who can have "bursts" in the midfield. Eddie betts is a similar type.

And by the way, our midfield also has deledio and cotchin to come in as A grade talent (and possibly coghlan) but hey, let's cloud the issue for your benefit hey by putting in players like king and mcmahon who are not midfielders.
Because we have a serious ruck and KPP deficiency and vickery is the best ruck prospect in the draft. Pretty simple really. Yarran is just another small forward who may well end up being pretty good. Fact is, with stevens on the way out rich would have been another gun midfielder in the carlton side. Would have been just the most delicious midfield in the comp.
What the hell are you on about? What facts? Where have I bagged Yarran? I just basically said rich would have been a better choice considering stevens has real issues with weight and injury. His neck is stuffed and the soft tissue injuries are creeping in.
The irony of The Cootch's post is compelling and priceless in hindsight when he wants to get Cousins to Tigerland.

The Cootch considers Stevens old and on the way out because he has soft tissue injuries, yet Cousins the reforming druggies tore his hamstring from the bone in his last year.

And Cousins is two years older than Stevens...

The Cootch is a fool like all those Tigers arguing their poor case to get Cousins.

What a rabble.

Off topic I know but I sort of remember Frank being a few years behind me in our school athletic team - my recollection is that he was a champion hurdler. Anyone know?

Is this a fair analysis? We don't have a rich to contend with the selection of cousins. If cousins comes over and fails, who cares? In the meantime sponsors jump on board for a heap of exposure, 5,000 additional memberships are sold, the G gets 90,000 in round one and is our home game. All positives with few negatives. He costs us nothing and we're the good guys who gave him another go. If there is a god he'll rip collingwood a new one and make eddie cringe even more!!!
