Tall defenders who can lock down the best key forwards in the league are gold and always will be.

I think we need to highlight the job Talia did on Franklin last Friday night a little more.

Franklin had a season low 11 touches (previous low was 15 against Port) and a season low of 1 goal (which was from Laird kicking it straight to Frankin).

Yes, Franklin had 4 scoring shots, but that was still less than every game this season other than his game against the Giants, where he kicked 2.0. However, in the Giants game I'm guessing he played higher up the ground as he had 22 touches and 9 inside 50's that game, which may explain his lower scoring shots.

You can complain that Talia doesn't get a lot of the ball, that he's not attacking enough and that his disposal isn't the greatest. Those are all true to a certain extent.

But how good is it to have a guy that plays on the #1 KPF each week that you know will keep their opponent to a couple of goals at most? The guy is a freaking glove and about as dependable as you can get in the game today.

Talia's job on Buddy was superb. As a pure stopper he is one of the best in the game right now. And yes he may not be the most offensive player, but be does need to be in our system. This is because he can get the quick handball or kick out to one of our more offensive defenders. That is all be needs to do.

As Jake Lever and the AFL world have learnt our backline is one of the most cohesive in the game. It's quality is in the sum of all parts and not the individual. Yes we have great defenders down there, but their strength is in the way they work as a unit.

He averages 1.5 goals per game against us. Only once has he kicked more than 2 goals against us. That was back in 2015, when he kicked 4 goals.

However, Talia didn't play that game. So he only averages a goal a game vs Talia.
Probably a bit to do with how shit Gold Coast have been against us.
This years a different case however I have full faith in Talia to blanket lynch.

I don’t understand the criticism in the lack of offense in his game. Personally, I want my full back to, you know, defend. Shut down the opposition’s best forward. He does that like a boss. Couldn’t give a shit that he doesn’t charge forward with the ball, that’s not his job.

I honestly believe it is just Victorian footy media smoke & mirrors (read: grasping at straws) to allow them to continue to orally fellate Rance as the best “defender” in the game. “Talia doesn’t attack, therefore Rance is better.”

News for you people, Rance doesn’t defend.

Rance does defend, just normally against one of the weaker opposition forwards. Jenkins towelled him up in the first half of R2, so they put him on Fogarty for the second half.

Interesting story from that game.

Apparently leading into the Richmond game JJ went to Pyke's office and had a robust debate with the coach. JJ apparently told Pyke to play him out of the goal square and that he will kick goals. Pyke wanted JJ to play the lead up and run back into space to try and get those "Joe the goose" goals but JJ wanted to be planted in the goal square against Richmond and promised Pyke he will kick goals which he did. 5 if I am not mistaken.

Back on Talia, easily the best shut down defender in the game when his body is sound. Tals has had a good PS and when it comes to preparation he is best at the club. His recovery work is bordering on insanity. He lives in an ice bath.

I had read that he's very, very professional about football. He's also one of the first to question anything if he doesn't believe doing it will help him or the team be better footballers.
