Danielle McGahey set to become international cricket's first transgender player

Danielle McGahey is set to become the first transgender player to feature in international cricket after being named in Canada's squad for the Women's T20 Americas Qualifier, a pathway to the 2024 T20 World Cup. Several other sports, though, do not allow transgender women to participate in women's competitions.

McGahey, a 29-year-old batter, is originally from Australia but moved to Canada in 2020. According to BBC Sport, which reported the story first, McGahey socially transitioned from male to female in 2020, before undergoing a medical transition a few months later in 2021.​

McGahey's stats in the recent Canada league are impressive.

About 900 runs @ an average of 67 with a strike rate of over 180.

The Brazilian, USAmerican and Argentine bowlers would want to know how to bowl some good yorkers and slower balls.

Otherwise they may be in for some long days with McGahey at the crease.

Apparently used to bounce around 3/4/5 grade in suburban cricket.

Cricket will need to get on top of this because this is obviously going to give Canada grossly unfair advantage in these matches.

Ahh yes the ICC. They have such a wonderful record of writing and enforcing rules to ensure women are treated fairly. I'm sure they're well and truly on top of this issue, just like Afghanistan's totally law-abiding membership.

Just make Men's sport open to all - he, she, che, xhe, xer - make it inclusive - anyone can play.

That way we have something inclusive for all.

There's a video of her playing circulating - let's just say women's club cricket in Canada is not a great standard. If she has any advantage, it's just that she has played cricket for a long time and her opponents haven't.

What about being faster, bigger hands, faster reflexes, stronger. None of that helps cricketers?

She won her race at the college level champs. At the same event, Kate Douglass broke a dozen NCAA records as did multiple others - Thomas wouldn't have even won her race other years.

Since she transitioned, she's lost an inch of height and most of her muscle mass.

People are grasping at straws about this - it isn't a man in a wig. It's a person who's body has transformed after three + years of oestrogen treatment.

People are inventing worry about this, when it's a complete non event as an issue.

Even sports where there's absolutely zero physical advantage like darts and snooker women can't beat men on the pro tour. What chance have they got in real sports. The M>F inclusion to womens sport has to stop

No one is suggesting that men play in women's sport.

The misunderstanding comes from people that don't understand the dramatic physical change that comes with transitioning. They're not still physically the same as they were prior to the many years of hormone therapy and medical intervention.
