I don't know if stats ever tell a story for a defender. It doesn't include spoils, or how many goals his man got on him. And frankly, how many defenders are taking contested marks?

Think you're being a little harsh. Jacobs played the role his body let him very well, although I'll grant the role is not the most important or significant on the footy field, to say he was an average footballer is tough IMHO.

The marks and contested marks was to back up my statement that he liked the easy kick.

You can see the differential between marks and cont marks shows how he got many of his kicks.

I agree that they don't tell the whole story, as i mentioned, but those particular stats do show how he played the game and it was even more evident at Hawthorn.

But those particular stats do show how he was played in the game and it was even more evident at Hawthorn.

Added some words in.

He was better than average; he woul dhave made 150 games if not for injuries.

No point bickering in a guys retirement thread, especially when it's just due to a different idea of 'average' (most pedanticly speaking, the average AFL player isn't very good).

To say he was any more than average is ridiculous imo.

While averages don't tell the whole story, they give a good indication.

Here are his career stats per game

2000: 9 games, 9.2 disp, 3.2 marks, .9 cont marks , 3.9 tackles
2001: 23 games, 11.8 disp, 4.1 marks, 1 cont marks , 2.4 tackles
2002: 24 games, 16.5 disp, 6.1 marks , 1.5 cont marks , 2.4 tackles
2003: 24 games, 13.3 disp, 5 marks, 1.1 cont marks, 2.3 tackles
2004: 12 games, 12.2 disp, 5.3 marks , 1.2 cont marks , 2.2 tackles
2005: 15 games, 16.3 disp, 6.9 marks, 1 cont marks , 1.5 tackles
2006: 9 games, 17.2 disp, 7.6 marks, .6 con marks, 1.1 tackles
2007: 9 games, 16.2 disp, 8.2 marks, .6 cont marks, 1.9 tackles

What they show is like i said earlier, liked the easy kicks.

Most of his marks were when collecting easy kicks and for a defender he he didn't lay many tackles.

He wasn't a dud by any means and read the play and flight of the ball very well, but was no better than an average AFL player.

of his uncontested marks a lot of them from from the boot of the opposition because he was smart enough know where the ball was going, would love to know how many contested marks actually get taken these days it wouldn't very many

he did his job at both clubs

No, he got most of them zoning off his opponent when we took possession of the ball and received an easy chip kick.

Anyways, i've made my point and good luck to him irl.

Crap he zoned off at the right times because he was smart. Quote stats all you like but we all know they mean bugger all especially for defenders. I have watched Dustin Fletcher play and say he was bog by a mile then look at his stats and he has had 15 touches.

I think you will find the year Adam Goodes won his first Brownlow at least 8 of his votes were in games he got 14 touches or less.

Was very very good while at Essendon. Thought he was all class. My Family are Essendon supporters and were shattered when he left.

Never quite displayed what he was really made of at Hawthorn from what i saw, and i'm sure that'd be a pretty big dissappointment all round for him and for all supporters who enjoyed seeing him play.

Wish him goodluck for the future.

Very average footballer who preferred the easy kick but did still play over 100 games.

Had a lot of injuries later in his career, good move that he pulled the pin.

That's a bit rough, played some good footy for us & I recall a time when he pinch-hit pretty well in Fletch's abscence

We definitely traded him at the right time though, jumped the shark bigtime

Danny Jacobs.......

He was one of those players that just was going nowhere in their career, he had the right style and skills for footy but he just didn't use his ability to the Max, we've seen some good out of him but all has been very average...... All I can say about him now is that "he could have been someone" and he just turned out as a non-determined player that just dragged their feat through their whole career and ended up as nothing.

He'd have to be spewing now for wasting a very well expected career, but whatever happened to set him off his path, it must have been something pretty off setting because he could have been a star.

Read todays article in the sun. God that guy has had some bad luck, really unfortunate stuff.

Yeah ive never heard about any of that stuff before, his upbringing etc. Its funny having read that story i have changed my opinion of him from an untapped talent who could have been special to a battler who got everything out of himself and was cutdown by injury. Well written article i suppose!

Really liked Danny when he was at the bombers. he had progressed well, became a great mark and defender and looked very promising for us. i was sad to see him go... but i heard he was banging a team mates missus... so I guess there was some unnecessary tension amongst the players.
Good luck danny

Still, that would probably be the reason he was axed instead of Bolton. It certainly wasnt a skil issue. Sheeds loved commited players, and I guess Jacobs just wasnt as committed as Bolton (although I must say Bolton would be one ofthe most committed players to have played under Sheeds.)
