Being up in Brisbane we don't get to see much of Willy, so my knowledge of Stanley is limited to the 2 (I think) games he has played with the Pies and last week's game for Willy.

I really like what I've seen from him. He's got very good disposal and seems pretty composed. He also seems to have a bit of anger in him which I like. The only criticism I have, and this is based solely on last week, is that he doesn't work hard enough off the ball. A few times he had the opportunity to put his body between a team mate and an opponent and he just stood around watching.

After hearing the talk on him last year I expected him to be pretty slow, but I don't think that has come through. Do we expect him to become a part of the midfield in the next couple of seasons?

The club a really hoping for him to in some way fill part of the whole left by scot burns, By having him adding some grunt and muscle and be an in and under mid. His not tragically slow although not extremly quick by any strech has a good solid build. I think he still lacks the endurance to run a full game through the middle, which may have something to do with his laziness when working off the ball. He is one of the MANY X factors in the transition between the old and new midfield and how many new midfielders we need.

If he can fill an in and under role in the midfield all of a sudden our young mid stocks look a lot more promising and well rounded. As we have

Wellingham- promising all round mid decent skills and pace and in and under worker

Pendleburry- we have all seen ozes class good hands at stoppages.

Thomas- Will play through the midfield more and more. Great flair run and class, as well as some pretty good ability to get first hands to the pill at clearances.

Clarke- Much like Wellingham in very all round mid skills if he can improve his ability to read the tap work will be an awesome midfielder.

H Shaw- Still may make the transition that Burns n B Johnson did from backflank to midfield

Swan- We have all seen what he can do is only 23

unfortunately got shown up playing as a key/mid defender in his 2 matches at AFL level...since then has been playing in the centre for Willy and has done very well, won't be surprised to see him stay in the centre for Willy this season then have a big preseason and play midfield next season at AFL level

In his debut game he scored a red-hot Russell Robertson, who booted three of his seven goals on him. I think most kids would have been shown up in similar circumstances. Despite that, he didn't drop his head and give up. He stuck at it and did some nice things. From memory, his game against Sydney was quite good and I thought he was very unlucky to get dropped after it. He's unlucky not to have played more senior games this year IMO.

Stanley's a very important player in our future. If he can turn into the tough, ball-winning inside mid we desperately need, Collingwood's prospects are much improved in the short to medium term.

i like the look of him.
hes big across the shoulders and like mentioned above he has the potential to fill that Burnsy roll. Hes has the body and skill its just about application for Stanners now.

Danny Stanley has shown plenty, future midfield as previous poster said will play out 2007 in midfield for Willy have a huge pre season and bingo Look Out. He is touted as replacement for Scott Burns in the future, big wrap for the young man. Has leadership qualities as well has the whole package.

Done enough to stay on the list. I have my doubts but we'll have a better idea at the end of 2009.

I tend to agree with you, that said 2 years and having shown not much at afl level generally starts putting pressure on you. Especially considering he played so much of last year in willies 2's. That said he is in the lucky position of having the potential to play a role we desperatly need and so i dare say there isn't to much pressure if any on him to retain his spot

Stanners played full back first quarter yesterday. Not a full back. Stupid coaching decision to put him there. When moved into the centre got the first clearance and resulted in a goal. Perfect execution. Finally he has been given an opportunity to prove why he was drafted it has taken 1 3/4 years to do so. I am sure if he was given that opportunity earlier he would have
played more games at AFL level. He has great disposal of the ball and very clean skills and great vision. He is extremely hard and won't back down from a contest.
Yes it is just what we need. Go Stanners.

Yep. Much under-rated by those who should know better. Been consistently played down back with Willie except for last few games in his true position as mid. Going along at 25 possessions a game week in, week out. Selectors might possibly notice this one day.

BTW, disposal is beautiful. Don't know how the rumours about indifferent disposal started, but they're not true.

He may have been out of position, but he was playing full back on a guy who never plays up forward and has been a defender his whole career. Benny Careless kicked 4 goals on Stanley in the first quarter - he just gave him too much latitude - mind you the ball was coming in pretty easily. Normally would have been a reasonable match up.

I hope he gets kept for next year as i have been impressed with some of his midfield work.

He shows much more than cook who i think will be cut from the list.

I dare say Stanley and Cook are far from the gun Cook looked good at AFL level in the limited time on ground he had IMO had a good cool head and made some good choices with his disposal, Stanley hasn't been given much oppertunity to play the role he is used to/we recruited him for hopefully with a big preseason and a tank that lets him run out a game in the midfield we will see big things from him, I also think his lack of a defence is the reason for him being played down back as crazy as that sounds. I feel they want him to improve his awareness and work rate off the ball hence playing him down back where if he does not do this the consequence is a goal
