Its obvious to anyone with half a brain re footy that he does not have it.

MM has formed this view and his papers are stamped. Funny to see those who were all for him reach the same conclusion about a year later. Some things you can teach, some you can't and what Danny lacks only god can give.

Yes, I for one had high hopes for him - founded, admittedly on ignorance, and enthusiasm to match his own.

Perhaps MM has been proved right again.

A few people have said it well in this forum. You must play within your limitations, and from what I hear Danny did not really do that at Collingwood. The delisting and move to the Gold Coast really was a blessing. A wake up call. Now he is in our top couple of most important players, easily our best tagger and a natural leader. Sometimes players need the second chance. Danny took it.

He

has done well, good luck to him. I think most would be happy for him. I am

Yeah sorry if it sounded like I was trolling guys I thought it sounded a bit bad after I posted it but I thought people would be interested to see how far he has come. He is firmly entrenched in our 22.

Danny Stanley is like a C Class Shane O'bree, relying on toughness and fitness rather then absolute skill and ability.

He doesnt seem to have that real defensive side to his game like most taggers at AFL level have.

Of the side that played on Saturday, the likely candidates are Barham, Francis and even Blair may be developed into tagging types over the next few years.

It's unfortunate for Danny, but it seems the only way he will be wearing a Collingwood jumper next year is as a VFL top up player.

Agree with you and the Reason he is still in the Suns side is that they still have Kids but they should be getting Ready in the next 2 Seasons so I can see Stanley getting Pushed out of the Suns Side in next 2 seasons

And some real evidence that some people only watch their own team play :thumbsu:

I understand you may think this having seen him struggle at Collingwood but he is hugely important to us. Will not be squeezed out at all. Is seen as a long term player by both fans and the club.

He just got played every time we happened to get flogged from what I remember.

Was that at VFL level too? Hard under those kind of conditions to build your confidence up. I have no doubts that you look at Geelongs superstars and Collingwoods superstars and wonder if they would have been half as good if they were not able to feed off each other during their dominant periods. I'm hoping that as we grow as a team, our mids are feeding of Gary Ablett and co which should hopefully see us have a midfield as dominant as yours

Sort of. I think most of it comes down to being played out of position in the senior side. Every time he was brought into the side, he was predominantly played across half forward which was probably the lowest chance of success, position wise, for Dan. He was inside midfielder at the time who could run with an opponent but gather quite alot of football going the other way in the reserves. I think the only real game he played in the middle at Collinwood was when St Kilda flogged us at Etihad in I think 2009 (we were depleted that week). Managed to get a bit of the pill but as you can imagine, didnt stand out and was dropped the following week.

Would I be mistaken if I said he played mostly across half back for you guys in his first few seasons at the club? I cant help but think he learnt quite a bit from a defensive standpoint and has carried that into the midfield.

And I disagree with TradeDraft above. He will definitely be best 22 when the Suns are pushing for a flag in the next few years. Skills have improved considerably and like you said, has added that run with capability in the reserves and transferred it to senior football.

You'll find most around here are really happy for him.

Most of what you said makes sense

However in our first AFL season, 2011, he won our clubs leading goal kicker award. He was played as a utility, but one suspects looking back a lot of that would have been as a mid sized forward.

Might have to go back and have a look lol

He was one of our better vfl players and the criticism of him from his limited games in the seniors was ott. He found the ball well enough for his role but his kicking and also got caught out a few times let him down.

He never had a run of games and yes playing when we got some of our worst foggings made him a scape goat.

Didn't he come in early on in his career and got stuck playing on Russell Robertson one day, who made him look a bit silly. I might be wrong but I seem to remember at the time thinking it was a bit of a disgrace by MM to hang him out to dry like that. Certainly very happy to see him make a pretty decent career for himself at the Suns. Still good mates with a lot of the Pie boys I believe.

Yeah agree with this.. I always thought he should have been given a decent run in the side at senior level at some stage. He was dominant week in week out his last year with us in the VFL but kept being overlooked at selection. Think he was one that got away from us for sure.

it's not like he's some superstar that we threw away...he was/is a good ordinary player who got the chance to show his stuff with a team of 18yo's where he's fitted in nicely. And yeah...I don't think Malthouse gave him a fair go...but it's not like our list is short of quite-good/half-decent players. Good luck to him & all...but not one to lose any sleep over.

I guess Collingwood supporters are not willing to admit that Stanley is actually a good player. He will not be forced out. Every good team has its enforcers that take the hard bumps and dish it out to the opposition. He would probably still get a game with us if he was on the list.
