This is a type of rort that should be eliminated by the AFL. North knowing they are getting a high first rounder in Thomas are openly saying their first rounder is up for trade, this is double dipping when you know you can get a top 5 player for a batch of much lower picks and get something player wise for your first that should have been used on your "gift" academy player.

Sydney could do the same trading say their first for a good player and only having to use a batch of much lower picks for a potential top 5 talent in Blakey when that's what their first should have gone on.

This rort/loophole advantages teams with guaranteed top 10 talent tied to them by F/S or academy.

The Swans have had a main list of 38 players for as long as anyone can remember though, it's not like they started that to use a loophole in the bidding system. The jist is that they can no longer swap pick 15 for a bunch of 3rd rounders and get the same result, particularly if they want to actually draft 3 decent prospects in the draft. It makes more sense now to keep your higher pick in the hope that no-one bids on your target player before your first rounder.

Clubs using lower squad numbers is still a potential loophole, you're right about that. It doesn't make a lot of sense for clubs to use it that way, but the potential is still there.

I don't think we can seriously count delisting and re-drafting as being a bidding loophole? It's highly risky to say the least. Sydney did it with Alex Johnson whose injuries prevented anyone else taking a chance on him, but there wouldn't be too many required players who a club would be willing to cut loose with no guarantee they'd make it back.

There is a huge difference between delisting a player then redrafting them during the national draft for a spot on the senior list and delisting a player then redrafting during the rookie draft for a spot on the rookie list.

Since the current points system came into play the only senior listed player we delisted and then redrafted was Alex Johnson and that was last year during the Rookie Draft. Delisting a player from the senior list to only pick them up again on the rookie list is hardly new
