From the cheap seats, I refuse to accept Moore is the best on field leader of our club.
I'd have both Maynard and Howe ahead of him just for the leadership of the backline.

I could name 5+ players I'd prefer to hold that position.
1.Pendles - still the true on field leader/coach
2.N.Daicos - the one to put the team on his back and get us over the line. Leading the way through actions.
3.Maynard
4.Cameron
5.Howe

Unfortunately in our game, once given the role it's not challenged in following seasons without the club stepping in.
Cheap seat perspectives worth a whole lot less than those of the players, who regard him highly enough to have him as both club captain and AFLPA boss

The AFLPA has zero relevance to best onfield leader.
Yes I accept that the players voted him in in 23. But had Pendlebury kept it until now and the vote was done today, I suspect the vote might be different.

Moore is our premiership captain.

There's so much more to being captain than being the best player. I think his leadership is first class. I just want him to find form again. We don't know what goes on behind the scenes, he could even be carrying a niggle

I agree. Maxwell was not our best player, but he was a hell of a on-field captain who led with his actions when it counted. Shaw wasn't highly skilled but he is the best Collingwood captain of the modern era.

Shaw, Maxwell and Moore all have one thing in common.
Know what it is?

It doesn’t, but it’s clearly indicative of his general reputation

Does that argument work in reverse? What do Buckley, Burns, Brown, Choco, Tuddenham & Thompson have in common.

I think it was pretty obvious that Pendlebury still played a very important leadership role on field in 23 and still does today. Without Pendlebury directing the players through the last 5 minutes of 2023 I'd hate to imagine the result.

Did Maxwell have some on field help as well?
What about Shaw?

Seems like you don’t want to give credit where it’s due.

The players voted Moore in. That's good enough for me.

Players make the call at the start of every season don’t they?

That's actually not true.

There are contested mark intercept marks, and there are intercept marks from u playing spare a kick behind the footy 80 metres from goal and marking random hack bombs from the opposition.

These are different, everyone knows that. Finding a player who does the 1st is extremely hard and they are worth huge money. Finding the 2nd is quite easy

None of them take that many contested marks. Andrews averages 1.33 a game Darcy 1. That's an extra contested mark every 3 matches. Taylor comfortably the most of the defenders at 1.94.

Contested marks and intercept marks in the defensive 50. How many of those has Moore gotten this year?

Wish he would go for marks more often instead of the ol double fisted spoil he’s taken to of late.

If he can get both hands to the ball he’s very capable of marking those.

I’m told he was very close to retiring at the end of last season, due to personal reasons. Maybe he’s lost desire and confidence.
The club may have convinced him to go around again this season. In hindsight, retirement might have been a better choice.
Moore retire last season?
That is very difficult to believe.

You're so right. Our defense would have been great with Dean and Frampton as our twin pillars.

It’s what I was told. He has other goals in life.
As a Pies supporter I selfishly hope somebody clever sits him down and points out that his other goals in life will be far more readily achieved after a long and successful footy career.

Kids of today. Sheesh

What I’ve always loved about Darcy is - reputedly - that he’s not a footy nut, and admits that he doesn’t watch much footy. The joke used to be that he’d ask his opponent his name at the start of a game.

Its a joke!

I thought that was a healthy attitude. Maybe Darcy’s heart is no longer in it. Who knows?

Near the end of his career Steve Smith used to buy a herald on Friday arvos to see who(and where) he was playing the next day.

You’d hope Darce is doing a bit more opposition analysis than that!

Or has the opposition analysis done for him!

Just has to attend a session with the defence coach once a week, watch a bit of footage, be given some instructions, and told to go home and memorise it.🤣
