"Already, Parish looks likely to be an early pick at this year's NAB AFL Draft. As a bottom-ager last year he played five of six games for Vic Country at the under-18 championships, won All Australian selection and came second in the Geelong Falcons' best and fairest.

After recovering from ankle ligament damage from the end of last year, which led to a stress fracture in his fibula after returning to training too quickly, Parish played his first proper game of the season last weekend for the Falcons.

He started in the centre square, gathered 34 disposals, had nine clearances and was clearly the best player on the ground."

At 181 , we would have to go back to 09 with Scully to see a #1 at his height... so doubt that he can be that early... but top 5 , top 10.

With Weitering going really well and Schache having a huge game on the weekend and both Carlton and Brisbane needing "talls" really badly I certainly don't see Parish going no.1 now, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he is the best available "mid" in the draft on the night, if the likes of Hopper and Mills are spoken for. Darcy is very, very good and hopefully everyone will get a reminder of that when he returns for Vic Metro tomorrow after his injury layoff.

I think that's spot on. I have Mills, Parish and Hopper as the three best mids right now, disappointing that Mills hasn't played much footy so far this year. All 3 will be guns.

Could also add Partington the list, been very impressive in the champs!

Partington is good and I've had him top 4-7 for the last year - really like him. But he's now being overrated, I reckon. Production isn't everything. Much prefer Parish. Kennedy also sliding under the radar hard here.

It's a very tough one, Mills hasn't played this year (so can only go on what I saw of him last year)

I'm make it short, I'll go into more depth when I get to my Phantom Draft

Personally I'd go

Hopper
Parish

Mills is a midfielder, who finds a fair bit of the footy. His ball use is good (not super), he isn't super quick but is damaging with the ball going forward and can hit the scoreboard. (Was All-Australian last year) Is strong overhead with his marking, so if he played early for the Swans, he'll play as a crumbing forward/sub.

Hopper is a contested ball specialist and dominates the midfield. His contested footy is outstanding: tackling,handballs in the contest etc is fantastic, can hit the scoreboard too when within range.

Parish has pace about him, very classy and skilful, rarely misses a target. He'll run all day (was all-australia last year), can play in defender- but better suited to the midfield

Really hope he goes to the Saints. Just looks so classily with the ball and has good pace. Love his inside/outside games. #gun

With his good form he could well go pick 4. That is making assumptions about Academy picks, but that is the way of things now.

The HS have said a couple of times this week that Gold Coast will make a choice between Francis and Parish with pick 3, which I guess is based on mail. He does seem very much a "Clayton-type" though, being skinny, quick and skillful.

I guess it will also depend on how their trading situation goes, but he did nothing that suggests he wouldn't be good value.

Can see G.C. taking Parish. Losing Bennell may make the call easier.

Really like this kid and he's far from just an outside player as some have alluded to. His inside game is instinctive and quite sharp.

Reckon he's got a frame that can put on size too, don't think he'll stay a skinny run and carry type for long.

Happy to have him if it it pans out like that, reminds me of reminds me of a turbocharged Fantasia

Outside leaning mids aren't as important to a team's success and structure as giant mids like Dangerfield, Stringer, Martin, Cripps, Bontempelli, etc. Clubs put in bids for Heeney, Hopper, Kennedy and Mills. Demons wanted Mills. Oliver could take time like Cripps and hit his straps in 2017 whilst Parish comes in like Lewis Taylor. Demons taking on a Sydney look with Brayshaw, Petracca, Viney, Oliver and Tyson. Salem isn't soft.

I think there's a fair argument to be made that outside class is a large part of the reason for Hawthorn's dominance; you mention Sydney but it's certainly something Longmire has been seeking for some time. I see what you mean with the bigger bodied mids but you definitely need a balance to be able to capitalise on their dominance; for example the Dogs didn't show much improvement until we moved away from McCartney's inside/big body recruitment/selection philosophies and started injecting more pace, skill and general ability to create and operate in space. Parish would have complemented the Dees' current mix excellently, I think.

That said, I can see what the Demons are doing and I don't think selecting either Parish/Oliver would have been a wrong call. Just don't think selecting Oliver was an obvious structural decision as you've made out.

Well then why would you say they will 'regret the decision' based on no facts whatsoever. Oliver has been an impressive performer on the track so far and is already showing the benefits of an AFL pre season with his body shape already changing into a finely tuned big bodied midfielder. Some of the stuff he does at training has been very impressive and showing why we rated him so highly. With Roosy wanting to develop kids properly don't be surprise if he does exactly what Angus Brayshaw did.
