Jumping ahead to the Ashes... Am I the only one who wants to see D'Arcy Short make his test debut?

Left handed, occasional leggie, aggressive run maker has lots of potential to be a great test player, just needs to tidy up his game.

I'm a big fan of his, his stats don't really speak for themselves, he does seem quite inconsistent, which is probably why he's been overlooked for various selections. But he has lots of upside and it would be a shame if he at least didn't get a shot I reckon.

What is he lacking? Is it pure defense, not being able to eat overs? Consistency? First class experience?

Is he just destined to be a white ball specialist? I think he's capable of more or is he?

He’s simply a white ball specialist. He’s got a first class average of 25 with the bat and a high score of 66. He ain’t winning us the Ashes.

Fair enough but is 13 matches enough of a sample size, especially since he's a late bloomer of sorts.

Burns looks like he will be ruled and Warner comes right back in, harris would be well ahead of short in tests and bancroft has found form and would be the big threat to harris, short isn't in contention and shouldn't be in contention.

It's certainly not enough of a sample size to pick him in the Ashes.

That's true, it's definitely jumping the gun and taking risks, however I'm more asking the questions can he? If he gets on form could he be considered down the road? What does he need to improve?

I'm not sure if any of you respect Warne's opinions but he reckoned Short could have what it takes to be a dynamic test player. I know 257 in List A doesn't count for much in the test world but it's definitely something that can be developed on.

Maybe it's time for selectors to take a chance more not just on Short but other potential players. The test form hasn't been up to par, some good matches here and there and I know that's without Smith and Warner but it was dropping off a little before that, Smith has carried the Batting for the past few years. So maybe taking a different approach might not be such a bad thing.

Although I'm hoping for SoS to continue as long as he can and hopefully Bancroft and Harris can find and keep form.

Now that Smith and Warner are back things should be on the up on the test side. Although I'm not Warner's biggest fan he can produce.

Maybe I just miss the quality WA batsmen I grew up watching 😅

I didn't say or even imply he could win us the ashes. You may not be a fan or even rate him but how about answering any of my other questions I had, instead of posting something I literally mentioned.

Warnie saying he should play means nothing, Warne also wants swepson and stoinis in the test side and if you counted up all the players Warne says should be in the test side you would have a 40 man team.

Tell me how you really feel 😅. Clearly the solution is to narrow down from those 40 into 11, Problem solved, I'll go tell the gaffer.

He’s not test quality. Period.

There’s picking a bloke off ODI form and then there is picking a bloke off slogging a few in a t20!

Short doesn’t have the defence to be a test cricketer first and foremost. Won’t happen, and should never happen picking him in a test match. There’s about 6-8 openers ahead and about 15 middle order batsmen ahead

I've gathered, there is not much love for Short around here leaving biased judgements. Ah well, If Marnus can get 5 tests then surely D'Arcy is nowhere near as worthy. Taking nothing from Marnus I do like him but C'mon seriously. Either than some slightly better First Class stats in 4 times as many matches, what else justifies his selection?

Mate I don’t rate Laubaughne too much but he’s scored multiple FC hundreds something Short hasn’t even done once! As bad as Laubaughne was this year he still has made more FC hundreds (made one in county cricket first up). There is a good reason WA haven’t picked Short much.

Yes and instead of completely dismissing anything I've mentioned, how about we mention those good reasons why WA haven't picked him. Is it attitude?, desire? is there an ability he can't fix? is he willing? does he get a fair chance? What are these reasons?

You say he's not test quality and give defense the main reason? He's unable to get better in the field?

It’s everything but especially ability. He doesn’t have the temperament to bat long periods without trying to slog. Some of his dismissals in FC cricket are beyond dumb. Bowl him 6 dot balls and he’ll try some dumb get out shot and get out 8 times out of 10. If he hasn’t got the temperament by now it’s highly unlikely he’ll get it in the future he’s not exactly screaming pick me.

There is a reason why WA don’t pick him and they rate others playing long innings. Look at Josh Phillipe who demonstrated late in the year he could play Shield type innings’. Now if you want a punt that’s the one not Short, although he’s far from ready.

Thanks for your input, that may be the case, if he doesn't want it and is wanting to be a T20 mercenary then there is not much else he can do.

Seems like a waste of good Batting All-round talent if you ask me. That seems to be the result of T20's popularity and Tests fading. It's resulting in missing out on some good quality FC cricketers. Coaches and the players aren't willing to put in time it takes to mould the abilities it requires, that's too bad 😔 it's shackling the development of the pure cricketer.

Needs to put together a good summer at shield level. Problem he is going to have is that he bats at 6 or 7 for WA, now due to the 'Wade' rule you need to be batting in the top 4 to be considered for national selection. Exceptions will be made though if you score enough T20 runs. :D
