I know comics have been stealing ideas from each other from day dot (marvel from DC especially) but I'm really annoyed the key theme from the killing joke, one of the best ever batman stories, is being shoehorned into the Punisher here.

Joker's idea was the only thing separating a good man from total insanity is one bad day. He had one a long time ago and he's certain the bat did ("You had a bad day once, am I right? I know you did. I can tell."). He tries to force one on Gordon in some quite horrible ways. Like all the best Joker stories, he wants to show the world we're all just like him. But we're not... right?

So to hear the Punisher pull the same shit on DD is frustrating because not only is it very obvious where it's lifted from and shows a lack of originality this show has made a name for itself with, but it kind of misses the point with the Punisher entirely.

We know what made the punisher and if you don't you can look it up, I won't spoil the show. But I've always felt the punisher isn't about abruptly getting something - "I had a horrible day and gained a new perspective" - it's about LOSS.

Something was taken from him, and with that went his morals, his traditional sense of justice, his desire to conform, to live normally. But most of all his desire to see tomorrow, to LIVE. The punisher doesn't give an f if he dies - because Frank Castle is already dead. Everything that made him him was taken.

The monster wasn't created by one bad day - the monster was always there (he was a baddass soldier, not a shitty comedian or rich little kid). The bad guys just set it on themselves. And they deserve it. Everything they get.

Well, I hope you're right. I guess time will tell if it's a throwaway line they thought was cool to put in the trailer or a picture of the character's motivations.

If it's the former they could have done better, if it's the latter than I really wonder if all the talk about this guy being the highlight of the season is a great 'punisher' or a different (and kind of stolen) twist on the character entirely.

It's a bit hard to read too much into a trailer, but I didn't get the insanity vibe at all.

Plays to me like he's had something awful happen to him, and he's made a logical, clear-headed decision (at least to him) to strike back. (Which fits better with the whole Punisher mythos)

Liked the "half-measure" descriptor for Murdock, because that's effectively what he is in the way they've set him up. The fact he isn't all that willing to kill shitty people sets up plenty of consequences for everybody down the track.

Yep, fair point

I guess that would fit the character if they went that way, yeah. But I hope it's more 'Guy goes to war > comes home, loses everything > goes back to war on those responsible' than 'Guy loses everything > goes nuts; on crazy revenge warpath'

See again, this is a huge Batman/Joker trope. I can see they're trying to play up Punisher/Daredevil as polar opposites after a common goal but I hope they don't a) change the characterisation of punisher to fit this idea and b) crime other stuff to do so.

I think watching Arrow steal the batman schtick for years had made me quite sensitive to it.

That'll teach me not to not quote posts. One hit of 'delete' and I look like I'm talking to myself.

Sorry mate. Wanted to come back and write a more detailed post but had to go stupid work. Its always getting in the way.

Anyway yeah I see where you are coming especially with your Arrow comments and they defintely copied the jokers line here, but I dont agree its being shoehorned as from what I know of the characters, this isnt far off who they are. Just so happens they share are similiar theme. Thats very common in comic/superhero story telling though.

Except Arrow, as much as I enjoyed the show it basically steals everything.

Punisher trailer was heaps better than this one, and do the eyes on his mask look stupid or is it just me?

Disagree, both trailers are amaze-balls. Very happy we're getting some more Stick and the Hand.

Not sure about the eyes on his mask, maybe, will need to see more of it. I actually kinda like his original cheapo black costume more overall.
