http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...heros-welcome-at-Turkish-side-Ankaragucu.html

Around 3,000 fans of Turkish side Ankaragucu turned out in wild and inexplicable celebration to greet Manchester City cast-off Darius Vassell as he arrived in Turkey to discuss a transfer.

Amid chaotic scenes, Vassell was mobbed and surrounded by excitable well wishers of the capital club, draped with flags in the club’s colours and looked visibly shocked as the crowd chanted his name and let off flares.

Many of the supporters were brandishing home made placards bearing slogans of love for the former Aston Villa and England striker.

One declared ‘Hands in the air, Vassell is here!’ whilst another read ‘You are more than a player, we are more than a club – welcome to Ankaragucu.’

The hysterical scenes, which would appear curious to an English audience who have witnessed Vassell’s steady decline in recent seasons to the point where he has barely featured for City in the last 12 months, were stoked by the club’s chairman, Cengiz Topel Yildirim.

“We’ve terminated the pre-negotiations with Darius Vassell,” Yilidirim said on Turkish radio ahead of Vassell’s arrival.

“We aim to secure a big signing as this year is our centenary. He [Vassell] will visit the city and our installations. Then he will make a decision.

“I hope we can include him in our squad.”

Around 50 buses and 250 cars followed Vassell’s progress from the airport to hotel - reminiscent of title winning celebrations rather than the possible signing of a faded English star.

Memories may still be fresh in the minds of the Turkish fans of Vassell scoring the crucial opening goal in a Euro 2004 qualifier for England at the Stadium of Light or his terrific strike against Holland on his debut for the national team.

Regardless, should the deal be completed, Vassell will have great expectations to live up to at his new club.
Heres the photos too

Imagine if he was as cool and stylish as Michael Owen, Theyd be damn near riots

Great find Embers.

Maybe Michael Owen should send his brochure to that club. Imagine the reaction he'd get.

Some more funny things ive read

The people at the airport were a large hooligan group for the club Ankaragucu. They have about 5000 members and are very regular involved in violent incidents with local police. The club president told them to come to the ground and give him a good welcome but they went one step further it seems :D

The chicks handing him flowers and posing in his shirts were local strippers/prostitutes

Good find Embers! :thumbsu:

'Hands in the air, Vassell is here!'

:D

I'm tipping he was feeling like he was a long way from Birmingham.

Saw the interview with him the other night outside the hotel. Felt a bit sorry for him to be honest (and I rarely feel sorry for footballers).

Seems to be a bit of politics going on, there has been a recent ownership change and I think a few people (not necessarily Vass) are being forced out of the club.

Still wouldn't be easy being in a foreign country in the middle of the night, being kicked out of your accomodation and not all that sure WTF is going on.

11 games for 2 goals and 0 assists so far for Darius Vassell. 6 months later he still lives in a hotel, a bill which no one has actually paid yet but the club is supposed to. Apparantly his agent was ringing up all the CCC clubs to pick him up but no one bit given the financial troubles of most clubs in the CCC.

Onto why i bumped this thread, anyone see the reaction Lucas Neill got? President of the club greeted him of the club and handed him a Galatasary scarf where around 300 fans greeted him at the airport chanting his name. Football signings is a serious business in Turkey it seems

I know of a League One club that would be interested in his services. He'd complement Rickie Lambert very nicely.

BTW, I missed AC's post the first time. Deleted.
