PORT Adelaide’s fitness boss Darren Burgess says the mirror was turned on his high performance program over summer after he was asked to prepare the players for a new high-running game style this season. Burgess was not spared in Ken Hinkley’s 360-degree review of the football department in the off-season as the Power plotted a way to rebound from two disappointing years.
.....
“It’s a high running game and to be honest if you look around the league that’s the way a lot of teams are playing, the Western Bulldogs, Greater Western Sydney, Crows, so it’s certainly not unique to us. “The coaches come up with a game style and we the fitness staff try to train the guys to match that game style and be prepared for it.

2 years too late, but thank * we changed from an endurance training base to SpeedEndurance. After the 2012/13 and 13/14 preseasons where the guys were flogged we should have flicked the switch to SpeedEndurance.

He also says that the fitness base built up over those years makes it possible to play the game style we are playing now.

Wait until everyone else fades out during the second half of the year and we're smashing sides. Then come back to me about it being 2 years too late :p

He can say what he likes, but he didn't plan for the results we achieved in 2015 and 16. The squad had a strong enough base to do those 300m runs we did the 16/17 preseason instead of concentrating on those 3km runs that made Kane Cornes look such a hero.

Other clubs outsmarted us in 2016 when interchange rotations were dramatically reduced. They went the go hard, go early. for as long as you can and then hang on route. We planned to go for the tortoise approach that our endurance would out last them. And it showed up big time in the first 5 rounds before the suspensions and injuries really bit us hard.

That's why we changed. and Burgo and his department had to change and were forced to change by a 360 degree review. Not because it was all part of some long term plan. And I'm glad we finally changed - better late than never.

Yep we screwed up in dealing with the lower rotation cap which was then made worse by our structure allowing so many geese goals early in the season. We seem to have got it right now. Burgess is smart enough to ensure we'll never fall far behind fitness wise.

I think long term we're better off as well because every year of high quality performance management would surely be of greater benefit to our players' careers than years of our 2012 fitness spend.

You lot should stick to PlayStation fitness programs where increasing speed, power and endurance can all happen at the same time just by clicking a few buttons. It doesn't work like that in the real world unless you're on PEDs. Why do you think Adelaide is suffering a whole bunch of soft tissue injuries? Why did Essendon in 2013? I'll tell you why - because if you don't have the capability of pumping sufficient nutrients to your muscles through an improved cardiovascular system, you are more susceptible to damaging those muscles as they fatigue.

It's either one of two things. 1) Dumb luck that we built up a sufficient fitness base to play a highly taxing gameplan based on high speed running, with each season completely unrelated to the one before 2) Planned from the start when Burgess came to the club and asked what sort of players Hinkley wanted and he delivered them for him, even when lamenting the lack of skills on display to Kern but being told not to worry about it.

Burgess: "The body can only cope with so much".
What? Certainly a change of tune over his previous theories.
What was his previous theory? That the body can cope with anything & everything you throw at it?

He would have to be an idiot to believe a body's ability to cope with stress loads is not finite!

The key is knowing how far the limit is, hence we know we have one of the best, surrounded by some of the best, and financially fully resourced to maximise on their skills. Will be interesting to see how our fitness/speed/endurance matches up with other teams as the year progresses.

Certainly done amazing work with Ollie. His running ability makes him elite. I think it also contributes to his confidence and therefore quality hand passing hitting targets under pressure

I don't think he can take too much credit with Wines.

Can't remember who it was, but think it was on one of the Sunday morning footy shows where the comment was made that in being the size he is there is no way Wines should be capable of running the way he does. I think despite the tendency to moan about our coaches and staff, Ollie is actually an example of a success story as early days he was on pretty reduced game time in comparison to most midfielders. Obviously some of this is natural development, but it's no mean feat to manage considerable improvements in running capacity whilst maintaining the remarkable size and bulk he is.

Wines 2013 - 70.5% TOG - 90kg

Wines 2014 - 76.6% TOG - 94kg

Wines 2015 - 73.3% TOG - 92kg

Wines 2016 - 74% TOG - 94 kg

Wines 2017 - 79.2% TOG - 97kg

You don't go from 2014 Wines to 2017 Wines without 2015 and 2016 Wines.
