An ice hockey high performance boss who used to work at PAFC. What could go wrong.

In all seriousness, appears to be pretty experienced. I’m guessing Darren has schooled his team to roll out another strong fitness program

welcome Ian KcKeown

Anyone want to do a welcome thread?
well shocked it’s not an internal promotion given what’s happened in the past when they seem comfortable at West Lakes but given it appears to be a close former work colleague/associate of Burgess it appears he’s just appointed his mate to the role, must be a fitness guy thing… the last guy before Burgess was also appointed by his mate to replace himself in that role.

I doubt they were lies. The scripted bit is what the players or club employees deliver publicly. Would NAS have said mucking around ‘nah bruz, wouldn’t go play with racist Tex’, absolutely 100% he would have. Would he mean that in terms of genuinely considering us as a club, absolutely 100% not.

He might have done that. For Caro to jump at it and make it such a big story kind of proved my point. It's gutter journalism.

Was it five years? Not sure if the 'Tiser is reliable, but they say he was hired in 2022.

"The world renowned high performance manager joined the Crows in 2022 after helping take Melbourne to the 2021 premiership and has been lauded by Adelaide for his cutting-edge methods."

I hadn't realised it was that long. Time flies when we're having fun.

Maybe 4 years..

Not impossible to replace at all.
I think we will be fine.

But he did play a big part in our season this year. Cant deny that.
No doubt he’s set up our performance team with great systems and structure and overseen the design of the new high performance facilities. I think I read somewhere he’d already nominated his replacement?

The guy replacing him has worked with Burgess at Port Adelaide and they would have asked Burgess about him you would have thought so there is a good chance they are on the same page even though McKeown will bring his own bent to it.

Maybe they haven’t been listening to SEN the last couple of days. Seriously though, he’s obviously a top tier operator, never been in question, but he’s just one among the numerous in that tier. He’s been in AFL industry a long time for 1 flag. The way people carried on about him here you’d think he’s some kind of magician. Reality is that he’s just good at what he does, like 3/4 of the fitness bosses in the league. The “Burgess effect” was always fairy dust from the get go.
3/4 of the fitness bosses in the league aren't in the frame to steer global sporting giants

I think we'll fall back next season and it will slowly dawn on us all that the improvement wasn't all Nicks

I have us missing finals next year but not because of this. It's just what happens when we extend Nicks.

Don't worry.

Have to be impressed with the way the club has handled this away from any media spotlight.
Well that was unexpected.

No media leaks at all, and yet we managed to both know Burgess was leaving and run a process to find a replacement.

I like that the replacement has AFL experience, experience abroad and has worked with Burgess previously. Should make it a pretty seamless transition.

I would rather have Burgess appoint his replacement than the board.
Since Burgess had been consulting with the club for some time about his move according to the article, you would have thought he would have given some feedback on the selection particularly as he has worked with the guy. Could even have been a referee for McKeown for all we know.

The Burgess effect. The Rahilly effect. The Nicks effect. One of these is unlike the others.

I wonder if it was a decision which was close? And then our last month push him to say '#### this. Amateurs!'

Seems like a good time now to lose nicks and roo. Now is the time to properly complete the rebuild. New coach and Balme properly taking the reins from roo in that role.

Burgess was very good and has somewhat built the boys into men. A fresh voice and energy will be fine.
Nicks is the same. Built a team to a high standard and standards. But, like, Darren Burgess, a new voice and energy would be a good thing right now.

I'll miss Burgess because of mostly just one thing. He had his personal reasons but irrespective of these, he turned his back to the world and said 'I want to go to the Crows'.

We've only a handful who can say the same.
