Jolly was gutsy yesterday and I always rated him at Sydney, but this forum is undeniably harsh on some players (Wood, Buckley) while others get a much freer ride (not referring to Jolly here).

Bay Pie has it right.

Good game from Jolly, hopefully he carries on but his season has not been much superior to Wood's and the blokes on this forum feel the need to have a crack every three seconds at him.

How can you say that with a straight face?

Apart from getting smashed by Kreuzer, Jolly has beaten his opponent every week this year. Including beating Maric, Ryder/Bellchambers, West and now Jacobs.

Be honest, when was the last time Wood won his position at AFL level?

I think whats becoming quite clear is a few of us have a very different idea of how a ruck man "wins" his position during a game.

Incredible. We used to have Fraser who would rack up 20 touches every week and get smashed in the ruck, and Ed whined about it.

Now we have Jolly, who gets <10 touches but destroys his opponents in the ruck and Ed is still whining.

So how exactly does a ruckman win his position? Apart from, say ...out rucking his opponent....?

A toast thread about Darren Jolly turns into a thread where the people who know how important he is to our flag chances have to defend him.

I've said it a few times, and I'll say it again, WE CAN NOT WIN THE GRAND FINAL WITHOUT DARREN JOLLY, flat out can not.

We do not have another AFL class ruckman at the club, and Jolly has shown time and time again in his 2 and a half seasons at the club that he is not only a top class ruckman, but he's the best ruckman this club has had since Damien Monkhurst, and maybe since Peter Moore.

I'm sick of anyone bagging him, he is as important to us as any other single player, that I have no doubt about.

Define your interpretation.

Well, in this particular game. I keep hearing about how he "shut down" Jacobs, yet Jacobs had more possessions and more score involvements.

Yeah, he wasn't dominant, but I'd hardly say he was "shut down".

Again, I've been trying to find the hitouts to advantage all day and can't find them. Can anyone shed some light? If Jolly won that stat, then I'll give him that, but I think he generally gets beaten in that stat every week. Even Wood has been getting more of them.

When Fraser was there, we didn't have the midfield we have now, and by 2010, Josh was finished anyway, so that's not really a fair comparison.

Jolly has a far better team around him than Josh had most of his career, and still outside a decent 2nd half of 2010, hasn't really done all that much given the fanfare that came with him.

I'd back us to win the flag, regardless of who of Wood and Jolly was rucking. I'd feel a little more comfortable with the prospect of Jolly being the starting ruck, but the formline of the two players going into finals would be a more important consideration, and last season to be perfectly frank Jolly did not have superiority in that regard.

Jolly's a sensational ruckman, but he's not as irreplacable as you make out, and it just so happens that this board's favourite whipping boy isn't that far off his pace.

Apart from deliver a premiership that we all waited for for 20 years.

He polled Norm Smith votes from 2 of 5 panellists that day, so I'd say he's done plenty.

We can't win the flag without him, not a hope in hell.

You called him disgusting when he clearly wasn't.

Jolly dominated in the ruck, you shouldn't need the hit outs to advantage to tell you that he was well on top (should be in the HUN tomorrow for confirmation). Also competed very well around the contests on a night not to his advantage.

Personally I think we are in a good spot. We can win the flag with Jolly and we can win the flag with Wood.
Would + rep if I could.

The situation isn't going to change this season regardless so there's not that much point complaining about it. If this is the worst situation we find ourselves in we should count ourselves very lucky. The second KPF is a much bigger worry in 2012.

I'm not worried about that either, especially if we get all our kpd's back. Certainly theres nothing obvious in the VFL though.

I'd love for Dawes to succeed, but I really don't buy into the argument that he should be kept in the side because he brings other players into the game because I simply don't think he does. Then again, he has at least shown he's capable (early 2011 form was very good) so maybe I'm being overly pessimistic from that perspective.

How good would it have been to have had a fit Rusling in the prime of his career with this mob though. :(

Rusling wouldnt give Jolly much of a chopout in the ruck though. Lead-up one position full forwards like Rusling (and Anthony for that matter) are not suited to the modern game. They dont have the versatility required in a game with high rotations and one ruckman.

I'm happy with Dawes, and he will get better as time progresses.

Yep agree that he is one of our best Ruckman for a long time.

I do have Jolly's player issue jumper from last year.
