Emerging forward Darren Minchington will face a delayed start to the season after injuring his left knee.

The small forward sustained medial ligament damage during a VFL intra-club match with Sandringham on Saturday.

Minchington was one of 17 AFL-listed Saints to take part in the hitout, after overcoming an ankle injury that kept him sidelined prior to Christmas.

General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean said the small forward would be between four-six weeks.

“Thankfully the scans showed it wasn’t as serious as it could have been and he should be back training in a few weeks, which is a positive,” Lethlean said.

“Darren was just starting to hit his straps over the past month after missing a large chunk of the second half of the 2017 season with an ankle injury.”

Minchington has played 28 games in the red, white and black - playing five of those in 2017.

Still looking forward to this season.

Darren Minchington (1.0) 15 kicks, eight handballs, two marks, four tackles

Minchington’s been really good for us the last two weeks. To have the influence he’s having on reduced time is really encouraging. He needs to get a couple more games under his belt, but he’s very clean in tight and makes really good decisions with ball in hand.

Great to have Meatballs back playing again .

Hamill says -
Darren Minchington Nine kicks, seven handballs, two marks, five tackles

It was a good return for ‘Meaty’, he didn’t have a great influence in the first half, but then he got busy late, particularly in the last quarter. His centre bounce work was of the highest quality, so we’ve just got to get his body consistent. He pulled up well, so we’ll get a full game into him as an inside mid next week and he can then progress.

Darren Minchington played his first game for the year in Round 20, and he was excellent inside. The pleasing thing for ‘Minch’ is that he’s getting time and minutes into him and he’s handling the workload; he pulled up well after a full game. Over time, he’ll be able to get more consistency in his body and hopefully play more games with us at AFL level.

St Kilda Football Club wishes to thank Darren Minchington, who was informed today that he will not be offered a new deal for 2019.

The 24-year-old played 28 games for the Saints after joining the club at pick 65 in the 2012 Rookie Draft.

He kicked 22 goals across his career, enjoying his best season with the club in 2016 when he played 13 games.

Minchington overcame a knee injury sustained in the pre-season to press for senior selection late in 2018 but did not add to his AFL games tally this year.

General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean thanked Minchington for his efforts.

“Darren has been the consummate professional during his time at the club, and was a really popular member of the playing group,” Lethean said.

“We wish him all the best for the future.”

....Even Hawthorn have been stressing about this, sending over one of their drones to spy on Minch's progress...

Awesome post of foretelling Kildonan !! The Hawthorn net spreads far and wide.

Seriously, never even knew this guy existed until today, sounds like he has had a horrible run of injuries. Hope he is able to overcome them and contribute more for Hawthorn than he was able to at Saints.

Career over? Axed Hawk fails in bid to secure final list spot
Darren Minchington was training with the Hawks over summer in a bid to extend his AFL career into a ninth season

By Marc McGowan 04/03/2020

HAWTHORN has informed talented but injury-prone small forward Darren Minchington he won't be offered the club's vacant list spot.

Minchington played in the Hawks' Marsh Community Series opener and last week's practice match – both against his old team St Kilda – and was hoping to score a second year on the list.

All clubs have until March 13 to fill any list openings via the pre-season supplemental selection period, or they could wait until the mid-season draft.

Hawthorn snapped the 26-year-old up as a delisted free agent ahead of the 2019 season after the Saints cut him loose following 28 games across seven years.

He was unable to add to that tally last season, at least in part because of three hamstring setbacks – the last of them shortly after coach Alastair Clarkson hinted he was close to senior selection.

Another minor hamstring strain pre-Christmas continued Minchington's frustrating run but he recovered to play both matches in the past fortnight, including kicking two goals last week.

His hopes seemed to be heightened because of the Hawks' lack of small forward options but they now look set to enter the season with Luke Breust, Paul Puopolo, Ollie Hanrahan and Dylan Moore.

"I don't think anyone in the game doubts that he's got the talent to play AFL footy," Clarkson told AFL.com.au in February.

"He can be elusive with the footy in his hands (and) he's a difficult little match-up, because he's clever with the footy and doesn't need many touches, but it's just whether or not he can get out on the park.

"For all the success stories we've had with guys we've been able to get out on the park, last year we were unable to get him out on the park."

Delisted, invited back, axed again: Cut Hawk gets another lifeline
Small forward Darren Minchington handed yet another lifeline by Hawthorn

JUST a week after he was told his AFL career was over, small forward Darren Minchington has been handed yet another lifeline by Hawthorn.
Minchington will replace Will Golds for 2020 after the rookie midfielder ruptured his ACL in a practice match on the weekend and was placed on the Inactive Player List.
Minchington was cut by the Hawks at the end of 2019 after failing to add to the 28 games he played at St Kilda from 2013-2018. He joins them again via the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP).

It caps one of the most remarkable weeks for a fringe footballer in recent years.
Minchington was told last Wednesday his trial period – which included playing a Marsh Community Series match on February 29 – at the Hawks was over.

He then watched on as ruckman Keegan Brooksby filled the final list spot on Friday that had been left open at last year's Rookie Draft.

Then, only days later, the 26-year-old Minchington received a call to return to Waverley Park after scans confirmed Golds would miss the entire season.
Minchington hasn't featured at AFL level since round 10, 2017, after battling knee and hip injuries at the Saints in 2018.

He was cut by the Saints at the end of 2018 before arriving at the Hawks as a delisted free agent ahead of a 2019 season in which he was plagued by hamstring setbacks.
The SSP allows clubs to replaced vacant list spots or replace long-term injuries up until March 13 – just as Essendon (Henry Crauford) and Adelaide (Ayce Taylor) did earlier on Wednesday.
