I don't see Lewis getting a penalty there. His options were

1. Don't pit that lap, and probably get a penalty for driving an unsafe car
2. Drive the wrong way around the track in order to enter the pits, probably getting a penalty
3. Cut the pittlane entry like he did

Of all these options, 3 was his best one.

I’ve seen cars on 3 wheels, or shedding deflated tens of kilos of rubber carcass, drive around the track without penalty.
So he should have done that.
