Its a possibility for Sheedy to try the unconventional though. I wouldnt put it past Sheeds, especially if we find ourselves behind on the scoreboard leading into the second half. History shows he's done that before with backmen.
I think Jetta is a chance, not a sure thing, but a chance.
I think they will opt to give Gumby a hit out at a lower level before he plays a NAB Cup game.
It's not unconventional, it just doesn't work. No opposition is going to leave Dustin Fletcher free. Danny Frawley isn't coaching anymore.
Itll be something to keep tabs on, especially if Mal holds his own down back.

Fletch will get free, but that's because he's a smart footballer. I have no doubt about that. Mal holding down fullback will give him that freedom.
However, we won't play Fletch behind the ball. He'll have an opponent because we just simply won't leave a man loose in our forward line.
To generate a loose man down back, he has to come from somewhere, normally your forward line. We simply won't do it.
You seem very obsessed with 6 forwards but, to use your term, that is Under 12's stuff. How many times do you see a conventional forward 6 these days. It is quite common to have 3 guys on a wing or 3 half-back flankers or 3 half-forward flankers.
I think Fletcher not manning anyone up is a very positive attacking move. If we're going to have Johns, Lloyd and Lucas in the same forwad 50 with 2 crummers, a 6th player is just going to crowd things.
I say back our forward line to take their marks and crummers to win the loose ball. Fletcher loose would provide the perfect drive into the forward line. If Fletcher has an opponent, the opponent will be playing on him, not vice verser and to find a player good enough to mark Fletcher would be very tough as opposition coaches wouldn't want to give up the players capable of doing it.
As for Hille, it'd be great to have him a kick behind play and with 7 backs we can definately have that. It means Lucas can play somewhat closer to goal and that puts a lot of pressure on any opposition.

Both teams have 18 players on the field. For Fletcher to play loose we would have to start with five forwards, which would leave a loose defender in our forward 50.
No, teams don't play with 6 forwards inside their 50, but every team still has six forwards, sometimes they start deep, sometimes they start high, sometimes they start in the oppositions forward line. But every team still has six forwards, six defenders and six mids. Where they start is redundant. But if we take a forward away, which is what we would have to do to generate a loose player (Fletch) in our back half, then the oppposition have a loose man sitting infront of Lloyd.
You are actually talking about an underlying tactic here, a structure. You have based your best 22 on the premise of having Dustin Fletcher loose in the backline, yet you still named six defenders and six forwards. It can't actually happen like that. Fletcher still has to be responsible for an opponent because there will still be 18 players on the ground for each side. What I'm saying is, what happens to that opponent is exactly why Fletcher won't start as a loose player, because Sheedy won't allow a loose player in our forward line, he never has, remember the Dogs game in 2000, the Richmond game last year?
If Fletch drops off and plays loose they will play through his opponent.
Believe me, Fletch will start at CHB or in the BP. He will start with an opponent, but he will pick his time to drop off, he already does that now. He'll just be further up the ground.
And if we have 7 backs and Hille plays a kick behind play, how can Lucas play closer to goal?

Geez,i'm glad an actual match is finally going to played next week..then we can all give the hypothetical tactical talk a rest and pick Sheedy's new system to pieces OR praise it!
time will tell what game plan we will have....i'll laugh my head off if we all are wrong about all the suggestions that have been made over summer...its starting to do my head in

I understand what you're saying. It's just that I think that if the opposition choose not to man Fletcher and go with a loose man in their defence, we have the forward line to manage it and Fletcher will no doubt do a lot more damage than the other loose defender, thus Essendon will come out on top. Also, if they do try and man Fletcher up, that means we crowd their forward line and Fletcher and Michael will be dominate in that situation.
If we have Fletcher loose and Hille a kick behind play that means that they will do the big marking duties outside the back 50 and Lucas can be a forward target on the forward 50 arc. It means Lucas wont have to be taking marks on the wing like he had to so much last year.
Your tactics are just as likely to be used as mine, if not more. Just had a bit of a vision of Fletch roaming around on his own, an open forward line and not having all our key marking options pushing up too far.

I can't wait either. I look forward to seeing what Sheeds has up his sleeve this season.
Im not talking about playing him loose, Im merely stating my opinion that its been well known in the past that Sheeds has switched some of his trusted backmen, who had great football brains...into the forward 50 at different times throughout his career.
Aside from the legendary moves in the 80s GFs, most notably Duckworth and Baker, he recruited Darcy from the Cats and I recall Tim chiming in for 2 straight goals during an ANZAC game right before half time to keep us in the game.
Theres nothing to suggest he wont have a go with Fletcher also. I think from memory also, he placed Cummings on Carey (using my opinion, only vice versa) when we were being ripped apart in 96 also. Sheeds WILL try the unconventional now he has some leeway down back.

Thats just it, we can all proclaim to know what will or wont happen....but its all merely speculation. Just some more outlandish than others. If people want to think Fletcher might play as a loose man up forward...so be it.

Fletch himself has gone up forward, nearly won us a game at the G against the Roos one night. 2002 I think.
There is every chance we'll get a few goals out of Fletch this year.
