Ellard has much better disposal by foot and kicks more goals than Curnow.

Honestly have no idea why Curnow gets consistent games. He isn't that much harder at the ball than Ellard...

You have to hate how some people use 'mate' or 'buddy' in their posts and the ugly disdain just screams from the page as if they were saying ******. What is it about footy forums - never see it on Poker forums and it is not as if we don't barrack for the same team :(

Why is Ellard v Curnow instead of Ellard v Bell or Ellard v Collins?

Curnow has more strings to his bow than Ellard.
Is this post serious? Curnow has one string. I'm not saying Ellard has any more, but if Curnow isn't at the bottom of the pack, then he's doing something that most other players in the team can do with greater efficiency and skill.

Ellard has goal smarts from his WAFL days and can provide link-up across the flanks. Also has good vision and composure and can find the ball.

Agree - Ellard can be dangerous in a FP and at a pinch could play BP in the event of an injury emergency (Curnow is a mid and ?)

Exactly..was it the Saints game where he came on as the sub at the start of the 4th and kicked 3 goals and went in hard when everyone else had given up?

Totally agree!

I don't care what stats Ratts has to support keeping Curnow IN, I can tell by watching the game that he is well behind Ellard. I personally don't think he's played a good game since Round 3.

Don't agree. If we wanted a mid/small forward, then Ellard would be picked. As a midfielder, Curnow has more strings to his bow in that he's a better runner, a bigger unit and an accountable player who shuts down hard runners. Ellard is too small to play on the opponents Curnow gets. IIRC, Curnow took over on Griffen who started well against Gibbs, but faded and was even benched at one point. Curnow links up across the flanks too if you noticed his gutrunning to burn off his opponent and receive the ball forward of centre. Faster than Ellard. See Curnow as Carrazzo's long term replacement if he keeps improving. Tough character after he copped two big knocks aganst the Dogs and kept playing.

Simple fact is that Ellard is competing for a small forward's type role - not a midfield role. The 3 goals against the Saints underline where his real strengths are. So he is up against Garlett/Eddie maybe Robbo and to a lesser extent Collins. I like Ellard a lot - but he doesn't have the size we need for an inside mid type role or a tagging mid role.

Dont Agree. Curnow is a horrible player. Cant kick, Cant handpass is not creative and is a revolting decision maker. Ellard can do everything he does + more.

LOL.

Ellard's motor and legspeed is nowhere near as good Curnow's. Too small to tag the bigger mids Curnow plays on.

Love that Ellard's reputation grows with every game he misses. o_O

Ellard leads Curnow in just about every stat this season... It's hardly unfounded to think he deserves the spot. Been BOG at VFL level the last few weeks to go with that. The leg speed difference would be negligible, Curnow is no rocket.

Curnow would almost be as slow as brock. no way he is quicker than ellard. Ellard has shown his ability to play a shut down role in the past. I remember he tore mat priddis a new one a couple of years back. Could if needed play as a defensive forward or as an attacking HFF. Curnow has no versatility. One thing I did not realize was how young curnow is. can definately improve.

Curnow is the quicker than Walker around Princes Park. If people don't rate his game against Collingwood 4 weeks ago they need to watch the tape again. His run and spread was great. That's what Ellard doesn't bring to the table.

I wonder if this should be Ellard v Armfield. Both were fringe players last year, both kick goals, both are runners. Id suggest that the form of Armfield this year is as much to blame for Ellard being out as it is for Collins being out. He's taking that spare half forward flank spot and making it his own. And in this particular instance Armfield is a LOT quicker than Ellard as well - and has some defensive capability to boot.

So he's a good endurance runner so that makes him a good footballer? Surely you have to be able to kick a propper drop punt and hit Handpasses that travel no more then 60cm. When you use the term "hack" for a footballer Curnow is exactly the type of player that springs to mind.

And how exactly do you know he is quicker than walker? Pitty for him walker can actually play

And if Ellard doesnt bring this Mythical "run and spread" where does he get his 19 disposals a game this year from. which I might add is more than curnow.

I think army is really the only player i our side that can take those really quick outside mids like Daniel Pearce and Stephen Hill. Ellard Definitely does not have that pace. Speaking of Armfields Pace. I reckon he is quicker than yarran. And if he isn't there would not be much separating them.
