Player Watch David Hale (2010-15)

Remove this Banner Ad

In Hale's first home and away game for the Hawks he had 4 kicks and 7 handballs. 6 marks, including one contested, one inside 50. One goal assist also. Only the one tackle.

He had 12 hit outs supporting Renouf in the ruck, presented well but was far off his full capabilities. Didnt look to have figured out exactly where and when to be to suit the Hawks game plan and style of play. Will look to fit in more comfortably next week and will have his spot under pressure from big Max.

Round 2, 2011 season. Hawthorn v Melbourne at the M.C.G. The twilight game on Sunday.

Hale steps up for Hawthorn after starting ruckman Brent Renouf is substituted out at half time with concussion.

Hale took over in the centre square changing with Jarryd Roughead.

Was one of the driving forces behind eliminating a 27 point deficit at half time and turning it into a 45 point win.

Ended the game with 6 kicks, 13 handballs, 8 marks, 9 hit outs, 2 tackles, 2 Frees For and a solitary behind.

His centre square ruck style is a bit just stand there and watch the opposition ruckman providing the big man presence. Still managed to get 9 hit outs against Jamar and Martin of Melbourne.

A lot of positives from todays game the goes towards putting a big tick on recruiting this player from North Melbourne.

Hale sat out the Round 7, 2011 clash against Port Adelaide at AAMI park on Friday 6 May with reported 'sore back'.

Apparently trained without problems today, Tuesday 10 May and is line for recall to the senior team for Sunday 15th of May game against the hapless but no less dangerous Saints at the M.C.G.

With 5 rounds played and a bye his figures read.

Kicks 18
Marks 23
Handballs 35

Goals 3
Behinds 2

Hit Outs: 56
Tackles: 8

Frees For: 8
Frees Against: 10

Hit outs: Has been used in tandem with Brent Renouf. Compared to his last couple of seasons at North - Season 2010 - 38 hit outs in total in 12 games and Season 2009 - 54 hit outs from 16 games shows that he is being used more in the middle than down forward like he was being used for North the last 2 years.

Season 2008 with North - 187 hit outs from 22 games showed him more the ruckman forward with 37 goals to his name for the season.

If we could get that sort of productivity out of Hale it will show he has been an excellent pick up. So far I would judge him as a worthy addition to the team but with just 3 goals to date there is room for improvement for the time he spends resting in the forward line.

Round 8, 2011 season Hawthorn v St Kilda @ the MCG Sunday 15.05.11

David Hale suffered a game ending knee injury in the 2nd quarter.

Stats for the match: Kicks: 0 Marks: 1 Handballs: 5 Hit Outs: 12 Tackles:1 Frees Against: 1

His knee injury was the 2nd suffered by the Hawks in this game. Full back Stephen Gilham tore his ACL in the 1st quarter ending his season. Hale's injury meant the Hawks bench was reduced to just 2 players as the substitute (Luke Breust playing his 1st game) had already been activated.

Despite this and the leg injury to 2nd gamer Paul Puopolo the Hawks went on to win the game after a seriously bad 1st quarter (00.01.01 to 05.03.33)

The knee injury may not be as bad as initially thought.

Hale news on knee eases blow for Hawks

Stephen Rielly From: The Australian May 17, 2011 12:00AM

HAWTHORN'S preferred backline may not be pieced back together until next year but its ruck division will be restored much sooner, with the news yesterday that David Hale could play again within six weeks.

The Hawks paid a heavy price for their commendable triumph over St Kilda on Sunday, but learned yesterday that it could have been significantly higher when Hale underwent exploratory surgery on his right knee.

Round 13, 2011 Season

David Hale returned to the senior team for the game against the Gold Coast Suns @ Aurora Stadium on Saturday 18 June, 2011.

Had played previous 2 weeks with VFL side Box Hill Hawks in Round 10 v Geelong and Round 11 v Frankston.

Hale recalled because of serious injuries to key forward / ruckman Jarryd Roughead and ruckman Brent Renouf suffered in the previous week.

10 kicks, 5 marks, 3 handballs and 1 goal 14 hit outs, 2 tackles and 1 free against were his match stats for round 13.

Hale partnered Max Bailey in the ruck, resting forward. With both Roughead and Renouf out for a while expect this combination for at least the next four weeks, baring of course an injury to either one.

Hale sans pace

David Hale arrived at Hawthorn in 2011 amid little fanfare and successfully slotted into the team’s best 22, providing a strong marking presence up forward and relieving Bailey/Renouf of their ruck duties when necessary during games.

2011 Season

The announcement of Hale’s signing with the hawks in the 2011 offseason was met with a distinct level of apprehension from many within the fan base. The combined factors of Wade Skipper’s departure after one season, continued scepticism regarding Max Bailey’s health and longevity, and nightmares of a horror opening to the 2010 season where only one fit ruckman was available for the first seven games, all indicated that the club had to be proactive in shoring up its ruck stocks. The acquisition of Hale, a serviceable ruck/forward who had been languishing in the North Melbourne reserves for much of the latter half of 2010, for an end of 1st round pick was not widely seen as the answer to our prayers.

Thankfully the Hawthorn recruiting department saw differently. Hale was drafted into the team with a specific role in mind. With the sub rule coming into play in 2011, ruckmen with the ability to play a second position were worth their weight in gold.

David was serviceable in backing-up the team’s premier ruckman while also adding a new dimension to the forwardline. His contested marking was the defining feature of his 2011 season, sticking his big dukes up into the stratosphere where defenders fear (read cannot) reach while using his hefty bulk to out-position his foes. While David could well be described as the antithesis of agility it was extremely encouraging to watch the endeavour with which he competed around the ground and for balls below his knees, consistently blocking for teammates and using his size to impose himself on contests.

After a quiet first round, it was Hale’s 3rd quarter centre-bounce tapwork that was the catalyst for the hawks 2nd half revival against Melbourne in round 2. The big man also amassed a career high 19 disposals and took 8 marks in a breakout performance for his new club. He kicked two goals in a solid performance against the cats in round 5 before having his season interrupted by a knee injury suffered a few weeks later against the saints. He returned in round 13 after Renouf and Roughead suffered LTIs and played all the remaining games for the brown and gold including a 3 goal, 20 hitout and five tackle display against Fremantle in round 19.

Hale saved his best performances for the business end of the season helping himself to ten marks against an undersized doggies defence (rnd 23) before playing his most complete match for the season against Sydney in the semi final. David stood up for the hawks against the swans with a career high 28 hitouts to go with 2 goals, 17 touches and five marks to be amongst the best on ground. While he carried this form into the preliminary final he badly let himself down with some atrocious goal kicking, a facet of his game that has long been considered one of his major strengths.

2011 was a fantastic debut season for David at Hawthorn. He was used more in the ruck than he was accustomed to during his time at North Melbourne and this is definitely an area in which he has scope for improvement. While his tapwork when he gets his hands on it is generally quite good, he is regularly beaten to the ball in the air by opponents who leap over the top him. It might be a good idea to try leaving terra firma once in a while big fella :p

It’s difficult to predict how Hale will be used in 2012, with a lot of structural decisions being dependent on the return of Roughead to the team (and in what capacity) and the arrival of Gunston. Hale has proven his worth throughout the 2011 season and will in all likelihood retain his position in the starting 22 for the season opener.

2011 Season

Hawthorn ruckman/key forward David Hale ended his first season at Hawthorn with very respectable numbers.

Played 20 Games out of 27 possible games. Was a winning member of the team 15 out of those 20 games.

Played in all 3 finals that year.

Earned 1 Brownlow Medal vote for his Round 19 Game against Fremantle at Subiaco. First Brownlow votes for him since 2009.

Hale ended the season with the following stats.

Kicks: 115
Marks: 98
Handballs: 125
Goals: 19
Behinds: 15
Hit Outs: 273#
Tackles: 41##
FF: 23
FA: 33###

# Hale's hit outs his highest ever in 9 seasons of AFL football.

## 41 tackles in the season his 3rd best in 9 seasons

### His Fress For vs Frees Against. For the first time his Frees For went into the negative against those given away? His best season was 2005 when he received 32 frees from the umpires and only gave away 7.
What did he do to change his game play? Was it playing more time in the ruck?

David Hale played his 150th AFL game Round 1 2012 season vs Collingwood.

In our win over the pies his stats showed:

7 kicks
6 Marks
9 Handballs
1 behind
18 Hitouts
1 Free for
3 against

Season 2012 - to Round 6 inclusive.

Hale has played all games this season so far.

Hawthorn's modest total against quality opposition is 3 wins for 3 narrow losses.

Hale' stats so far.

Kicks: 29
Marks: 19
Handballs: 41
Goals: 6
Behinds: 3

Hit outs: 111#
Tackles: 15

FF: 6
FA: 9

# His 111 hit outs is leading the club from new rookie recruit from Brisbane, Broc McCauley with 56 (from 3 games) and the return of injured forward and club co-vice Captain Jarryd Roughead on 42. Possible number 1 club ruckman Max Bailey is out on the long term injury list with a wrist injury.

Predictions for the rest of season 2012.
His average of 1 goal per game played for Hawthorn is on track.

That he will continue to do a large amount of the ruck work until at least mid season when maybe Max Bailey becomes fit enough to play again in which case he may find himself more a KPP forward and 2nd ruck, OR

He cements his place as the clubs number 1 ruckman.

Time will tell.

Its always interesting to look back to see what we gave up for our trades and see what they picks have done, this is fron an article on Fox Sports link

David Hale
After eight seasons at North Melbourne, including one where he led the Kangaroos in goals (2008), his work in the ruck has enabled Jarryd Roughead to play in his preferred forward position more often. That sort of impact well outweighed the cost of 2010 draft picks 27 (Keiran Harper) and 71 (Ben Mabon).

Does anyone know what's happened to him?
Hasn't played at Hawthorn or Box Hill and not listed as injured.

Missing his ability to present as a genuine marking option both up forward but also along the defensive 50 line during kickouts. That 3-4minute period where we simply couldn't clear the ball out of our defensive 50 and it kept repeatedly coming back in, I was thinking gee, having Hale to kick to would be handy right about now.
